The holy grail of contraception

Hi everyone

Is it just me or does contraception just mess up your body?

Basically I'm trying round 2 of the implant after having it a few years ago, I'm now 2 months into an extremely long and painful period. Needless to say it's coming out soon.

Does anyone have any experience with the coil? Or other sensible ideally long term methods apart from pills and injections.

Copper coil is the miracle for me! No hormones, regular periods and foolproof against conception.

Torn2 · 05/12/2018 14:34

Did it hurt when they fit it? Alot of what I try seems to really mess me up. It's so frustrating

I’m a lesbian, that’s the Holy Grail of conception.

Sowhatifidosnore · 05/12/2018 14:36

Contraception! Bloody text.

NeverHadANickname · 05/12/2018 14:38

@sowhatifidosnore that autocorrect was brilliant!

Sorry, I can't help OP, for me it was the implant.

MammaSchwifty · 05/12/2018 14:39

Vasectomy. (Assuming you're all done with children)

MaidenMotherCrone · 05/12/2018 14:40

Abstinence works 100%.

SmallYappyTypeDog · 05/12/2018 14:41

I had zero problems with the copper coil. It was uncomfortable fitting it but then I just forgot about it apart from a yearly check. Removing it was easier than a smear test.
We are using condoms at the moment as we haven't decided if we are having another baby as DD is only 12 weeks. Once child bearing is done I will be getting the coil again for peace of mind.

Thurmanmurman · 05/12/2018 14:41

Another vote for the copper coil. I would describe having it fitted as very similar to a smear test, perhaps slightly more uncomfortable. It is apparently less painful if you have given birth (which I had), as your cervix has already been stretched. I always had very light periods to begin with so having slightly heavier ones isn't an issue for me but if yours are already heavy it could make them worse. I've had 2 fitted, one after each DC and not caused any problems.

An0nym0u3 · 05/12/2018 14:42

Copper coil for me. Didn't hurt being put in (I've had 3dc) mild period like pains afterwards. Slightly longer, more painful periods for 3 months. Back to normal thereafter. it lasts 10 years by which point I should be menopausal. I've had the implant. I bled for months on it too.

MVLipwig · 05/12/2018 14:44

Another copper coil advocate. I had my first fitted as a 16 year old virgin so it’s really not that scary, uncomfortable but so good after. Can completely forget about contraception bar checking the strings every couple of months. I don’t even think it made my periods even heavier and still no bad cramps.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/12/2018 14:48

Get your tubes tied. One of the best things I've ever done.

TotalWhittle · 05/12/2018 14:51

Aquamarine, are there side effects of getting tubes tied? I’ve been considering it but not spoken to anyone who’s done it.

Torn2 · 05/12/2018 15:01

They won't consider sterilisation, I'm 24 and I only have 1 child. The doctors I've seen told me they wouldn't even consider it unless I was in my 30s with more children. I really dont want anymore that's why I'm looking for long term.
I've always been hesitant about the coil as I've heard horror stories, but I was told horror stories when I was pregnant yet I'm still alive haha.

I never got on with hormonal contraception. I mean it worked, but also killed my sex drive stone dead, so was kind of pointless. I loved the copper coil but then got pregnant with it in, so am hesitant to go back to it 🤷‍♀️. We now use condoms. DH grumbles a bit but also doesn’t want to risk another coil, and respects that I am unwilling to use hormonal contraception, so it is what it is until we decide we’re definitely done with having DC (we have two and are contemplating one more at some point) at which point he might consider a vasectomy.

Redhound · 05/12/2018 15:13

OP I would give it longer to settle down. Though you are more likely to get problem bleeding as you are young. I'm on Cerazette and that works brilliantly for me. You could shop around to find a doctor willing to tie your tubes; the childfree FB pages have lists of sympathetic docs available.

Coldilox · 05/12/2018 15:14

I’ve got the Mirena (not for cantraception as am gay, but to help with periods) and it’s amazing. Sight discomfort when it went in, mild cramping for a day or two, then my periods gradually got lighter and stopped after 6 months. Bliss.

Excited101 · 05/12/2018 15:21

I get in pretty well with the implant- I’m on my third. But I do have regular periods. For about 3 months I I went on the pill as well because I was getting these weird extended periods which were really annoying and that sorted it right out. I’d prefer to stay on the pill as well but I don’t really want to cost the NHS unnecessary money and probably shouldn’t pump more medicine in than I should...

Strokethefurrywall · 05/12/2018 15:31

Love the copper coil - vaguely uncomfortable fitting it but it was a couple years ago so I don't recall.

All that changed is that my period lengthened by 2 days and I now spot for a day before it starts.

Definitely recommend!

Whoopsies · 05/12/2018 15:58

I was really pleased with the copper coil, no hormones, normal periods. Only problem I've had is that I'm now pregnant!!! And no one seems to be quite sure where my coil has gotten to!!

Lyricallie · 05/12/2018 16:05

I’m 26 on my 5th year of the implant so about 1 year left of this one.

I love it. Have one period a year and it’s very light. I know people can bleed for ages though with it so I know I’ve been very lucky. I’m so forgetful so I love that I don’t jeed to think about it.

Copper coil is excellent as it contains no hormones. It's the only contraception I can use as I can't have artificial hormones. I get night sweats and migraines with the pill. It's also very handy to be on if you are likely to want to conceive in the future as when it's removed your fertility returns immediately. I'm 28 weeks preg now. Conceived 5 days after having it removed Smile

cragfastsheep · 05/12/2018 16:15

Another vote for the mirena coil here. Had it put in four years ago, slight discomfort going in and cramps for 48 hours and then all fine. My periods stopped after 6 months and now I occasionally get a very light period. It has saved me an absolute fortune of tampons/pads and so far no side effects.
