To expect the man on the next tennis court to wear a shirt?

Was I being unreasonable in complaining to the leisure centre management and asking them to insist on the man playing on the next tennis court to us to put his shirt on?
(They did, and he complied). Just wondered what other mners would have done?

you're at the wrong tennis club

get a life - there should be a rule that no man can wear a shirt whilst playing tennis

unknownrebelbang · 23/06/2007 19:25

Does depend on the shape though, naughty!

mytwopenceworth · 23/06/2007 19:31

Why did it bother you? Not being funny, am honestly perplexed. It was his tum, not his willy. If he wasn't pushing it in your face, just minding his own business then I think yes, it was unreasonable. It gets hot, all that running about after the ball!

As to what other MNers would have done, well, I can only speak for this one, obviously, but I suspect I wouldn't even have noticed him, much less been moved to interupt my own game to go complain about it.

Did you swoon and need a whiff of the smelling salts??!! heehee

mamhaf · 23/06/2007 21:02

It bothered me because it's so tacky - would he go in the gym without a shirt and sweat all over the place? Yuck!

To me, a good test of being reasonable is symmetry.
If the bloke playing tennis near you complained about your skirt being too short would you think he was being unreasonable ?

mamhaf · 23/06/2007 21:08

Yes, I would think he was unreasonable if I was wearing proper sports clothes - I should explain that the club has a rule about people wearing proper sports attire.
But even if it didn't, I'd think it tacky for someone to play topless (male or female)

I was out. In fact, I'm hardly ever in.

I asked someone from the club to ask him to put his shirt on - I was playing with dd1.

Did I say that? I'm sure she didn't even notice.

mamhaf · 23/06/2007 21:21

Crossed posts - what I meant was, I didn't think dd1 would be offended.

I guess the big deal is that the club does have a dress policy, he was breaking it, and I personally think it's tacky of men to go shirtless unless it's somewhere like a beach or swimming pool.
I'm clearly in a minority thinking that though - it's interesting to hear other people's views.

kslatts · 23/06/2007 21:43

I thnk you are being unreasonable, I don't have a problem with men not wearing shirts on a hot day.

kimi · 23/06/2007 21:47

Depends if he was fit or fat

Marne · 23/06/2007 21:48

I dont see the problem, its not like he was naked or showing bum crack, whats the problem?

yogimum · 23/06/2007 22:06

I think its tacky when a man doesn't wear a shirt, even in hot weather, unless at the beach. I only ever see it in England.

heifer · 23/06/2007 22:28

Have to agree, I would hate my DH to walk around shirtless (unless on beach), so guess I wouldn't like him doing it playing tennis either..(been a while since we both played)...

Or even worse (imo) wearing a vest teeshirt, ever ....

Each to their own, I dertainly wouldn't have said anything (too much a wimp) and not sure I would have really minded, as long as not my DH!.. but I would have judged the man....

bellabelly · 23/06/2007 23:16

I think it's gross that some men strip off to the waist at the slightest hint of sunshine. At the beach or in the swimming pool, fine, otherwise it's just yucky and bad manners.

binkleandflip · 23/06/2007 23:21

You're kidding, if anything, I really envy them that they can go topless on a really hot day!

agnesnitt · 23/06/2007 23:38

I would think that it's more sensible to have a shirt on when playing tennis. The sweat needs to be soaked up by something.

Not unreasonable really, on the scale of things.

I hate men wandering around with shirts off--unless they're on the beach. It looks slobby.

It's also a British phenomenon. You don't see Italian and Frenchmen baring their torsos in public places (that aren't beaches). Even though they'd probably be better toned and more attractive.
