Dairy free and arsehole husband (lighthearted. Kind of)

Just found out my 6 week old baby is sensitive to dairy. He is covered in spots (when I say covered, I mean covered) and his reflux is so bad that he screams and screams every time he feeds.

I've given up dairy.

DH today filled up the cupboards. With chocolate. Christmas chocolate biscuits. And BOUGHT ME AN ADVENT CALENDAR as I didn't have one (because I'm dairy free, doh).

AIBU to think he's a massive arse for doing this and that he should've filled up the cupboards with lots of lovely dairy free stuff for me?! 😜

(Also, dairy free suggestions never go a miss!)

He’s a massive arse. Coconut yoghurt is lovely.

Calvinsmam · 04/12/2018 23:53

Marks and Spencer’s do the tubes of rounds disks of dark chocolate for £2.50 and they are dairy free and perfect replacement for advent calendar chocolate, that’s what we did this year.

TigerBreadAddict · 04/12/2018 23:54

Lidl gluten free mince pies = dairy free

Rosalise · 04/12/2018 23:57

Dark chocolate with cocoa butter is usually dairy free. Check the label though. Desserts, cake or biscuits aimed at vegans don't have dairy. Alpro soya desserts are nice and I like their custard too.

BanjoStarz · 04/12/2018 23:59

Coconut Collaborative little choc pots

They’re bloody amazing

Tesco - £2.50 for 4 which isn’t cheap but OMG they satisfy the chocolate craving.

Best kept super cold.

I’m going to have to go buy some tomorrow now 😂

TittyFahLaEtcetera · 05/12/2018 00:01

I'm dairy free. I have a lush 70% dark chocolate advent calendar from Hotel Chocolat. Make DH buy you one of those. Waitrose do dairy free brownies and rocky road. You can also get some super rich dairy free coconut desserts or almond milk ben and jerrys. DH owes all these goodies to you now, in recompense for his twattery.

(Poor DS. Hope he feels better soon for your sacrifice. Flowers )

DidntKnowThat · 05/12/2018 00:02

@BanjoStarz Coconut Collaborative little choc pots

These are dairy free? Of course they are!!! (best realisation ever!)

Thank you.

Also YES to**@BanjoStarz** . They are my FAVE!!!

LoniceraJaponica · 05/12/2018 00:08

There is loads of dairy free chocolate around, and those little coconut choc pots are delicious.

Allthewaves · 05/12/2018 00:17

Coconut milk is a lifesaver for currys and can be used in loads of recipes instead of milk.

Cheap supermarket biscuits like bourbons and fruit shorties often have no milk in them.

My kids are sensitive to cows milk but cope well on goats milk and goats cheese.

Alpro natural yogurt with coconut is nice and doesn't have loads of sugar.

adriennewillfly · 05/12/2018 00:20

Chocolate oatly milk is lovely

BanjoStarz · 05/12/2018 00:22

The chocolate pots are soooooo good aren’t they?

Literally the best thing about being dairy free!

Tesco’s also do a semi decent range of lacto-free cheese (which is another thing I miss 😭) the brie and grated cheddar are good.

However, the mexicana lacto-free cheese tastes like 3 week old feet 🤮🤮.

Hope DS is better soon!

Spicylentil · 05/12/2018 00:25

I’m dairy free you can get loads of nice dairy free goodies, you can get a dairy free magnum, Ben and Jerry ice cream, Asda are doing a nice chocolate smash cake for Xmas, moo free do an advent calendar also hotel chocolat. Just look about in the free from areas and you will find loads of treats, stock up and enjoy! Wink

BurpAndRustle · 05/12/2018 00:41

Rude Health Chocolate Hazelnut drink is amazing. Lovely cold, also just heat it for hot chocolate that’s like drinking Nutella.

ThistleAmore · 05/12/2018 00:46

I'm actually not a fan of 'real life' chocolate, but Oatly's chocolate oat milk is lovely, as are the Alpro soya chocolate puddings.

Sorry to a PP, but I think Moofree's offerings taste like sick.

ZebraOwl · 05/12/2018 00:47

LTB &/or drown him in vat melted cupboard contents. Both seem entirely reasonable courses action in response to his epic thoughtlessness.

Ben & Jerry’s do 3 vegan flavours available from various supermarkets - chunky monkey, fudge brownie & PB cookie. Swedish Glace, as well as doing basic flavours, also do really nice pseudo-magnums.

Lazy Day Foods make a range of stuff like Rocky Road, millionaires shortbread & tiffin slices - again, lots of supermarkets stock it in the free from section.

If you want milk for tea/coffee, oatly barista is apparently very good. (As a PP said oatly chocolate milk = really nice...) As for whether you go for almond, coconut, oat, rice or soya milk generally - they’re now all easy to get & from a range of brands.

Alpro make soya puddings that are in the free from aisle, don’t need refrigerating. The caramel one tastes of coffee. Am sure that’s great if you like coffee Envy (not envy) Tesco own-brand soya yoghurts are nicer than Alpro ones I think.

Dairy-free “cheese” is... well it’s vastly better than it was, say, a decade ago. Friend who turned vegan this year thinks Violife is ok; & if you get a vegan pizza from Zizzi’s or Pizza Express, they use mozzarisella. I have one made by the “Follow Your Heart” company - has a weirdly high melting point, but tastes nice.

Spicylentil · 05/12/2018 03:03

@zebra oil I enjoy the violife grated cheese it actually melts so good in an omelette etc but couldn’t eat it in its own, I can’t stomach any other vegan cheese 🤢. Pp that’s said moo free tastes like sick, it’s not to my taste but my kids love it! Think it’s an acquired taste though. The alpro custard and dark chocolate pots are lovely, I use the koko coconut milk can’t get use to it in cereal but great for making a hot chocolate or for baking cakes with, Ive had the most success with cakes rising since using it instead of soya milk.

MaverickSnoopy · 05/12/2018 03:40

Oh DH I'm sure it's just the learning curve! I've been dairy free for the same reason for about a month and DH brought crisps and dip (sour cream and guacamole) last weekend. I just looked at him with raised eyebrows - genuine oversight. He's been making me all sorts from scratch. FYI homemade rice pudding with Oat milk is YUM. I've been through all the milks and oats milk is the only one that I like.

PG tips do a tea bag that works well with dairy free milk. Much better. Party rings and I think oreos are dairy free. Ditto Aldis oatie biscuits. Check labels for everything. It's surprising what does and doesn't have milk in. Frozen sausage rolls don't but pesto does, go figure!

Purpleartichoke · 05/12/2018 04:08

He should have gotten lots of dairy free treats. In fact, it would not be unreasonable for him to be dairy free or close to it at home in solidarity. Plenty of dairy to be had while at work and such.

BalloonSlayer · 05/12/2018 07:02

Co op jam and custard doughnuts are both egg and dairy free.

Chocolate chip hop nobs are also OK.

Sainsbury's (and other places) sell a dairy free advent calendar (moo free, a bit babyish). We got a more grown up dairy free one from Holland and Barratt this year.

I would urge caution, as you have a v allergic baby, in using too many dairy substitutes that are nut based, such as the ben and Jerry's ice creams (Swedish glace are very nice and don't have nuts) and almond milk etc. It's just that if you are allergic to one thing you are more likely to be allergic to others.

Isleepinahedgefund · 05/12/2018 07:18

My DD is dairy free too, it’s pretty easy these days, it was harder when she was little (she’s nearly 7). I mostly eat dairy free aswell now.

As an aside, my DD couldn’t even have breast milk, and didn’t improve until she was given a synthetic substitute formula on prescription called Neocate. So you giving up dairy won’t necessarily do the trick.

All you really need to do is get good at reading labels, know what is dairy that might be called something else (I’m sure there’s a helpful allergy website for that). Schedule in a long shopping trip and make sure to read all the labels while you’re in the supermarket. Make a list of the things you need substitutes for (e.g. you like biscuits) and read all the labels until you find one. Milk is a common allergy so it’s always well labelled.

Oatly barista makes a lovely coffee if you can find some.

She really likes the Go On range from Alpro yoghurt wise.

We both detest all the cheese substitutes, and basically go without cheese instead.

Ohyesiam · 05/12/2018 07:22

Lots of sainsburirs free from range is dairy free, nice chocolate slices which make a great pudding with alpro chocolate soya dessert. Yum

Brokenribses · 05/12/2018 07:30

When I had to go on a fat free diet my treat was turkish delight.

Linziepie · 05/12/2018 07:36

my DD is also dairy intolerant so i am eating Fry's chocolate cream and peppermint cream, lotus biscoff biscuits and using oatly milk.

Areyoufree · 05/12/2018 08:58

Vego chocolate! It's expensive, but totally worth it.
