To never eat broccoli again?

ToastyFingers · 04/12/2018 21:06

Went to make dinner earlier and my broccoli is absolutely covered in these hideous bugs! Some of them are very much alive and wriggling. Gahhh.

I can't bin it because my bins don't get collected for over a week and I don't want the buggers to spread to anywhere else. I'm also concerned about the rest of the fruit bowl. Envy

Did you get it from Tesco? I've had mushrooms from there with lots of little flies under the plastic wrap.

halfwitpicker · 04/12/2018 21:08

Lord above

FadedRed · 04/12/2018 21:09

Put it out for the birds?

incallthebloodytime · 04/12/2018 21:09

I'd be tempted to boil it

Then bin it

SillyBub · 04/12/2018 21:09

Just boil it for a few minutes to kill them all and then when it's cooled, bin it.

incallthebloodytime · 04/12/2018 21:09

Oh yes birds better actually

ToastyFingers · 04/12/2018 21:09

Nope, not from Tesco, from the co-op which I thought were quite naice and above these sorts of things.

Just wondering if where you bought it name starts with A?

Lucylugs · 04/12/2018 21:11

The correct advice is too wrap them well and freeze to kill them then dispose of them in outdoor bin. Personally I'd hate the thoughts of them in the freezer so I'd probably put them in a heat proof container and pour boiling water on them.

icelollycraving · 04/12/2018 21:11

I’d stick it in the bin outside and not think about it again tbh! —slovenly about wheelie bins—

icelollycraving · 04/12/2018 21:11

Strikethough fail. 😳

ToastyFingers · 04/12/2018 21:11

Ah, boil it! I didn't think of that. Will get my big pan (and long tongs) out. I live above a shop on the high street so putting it out for the birds isn't really an option.

Id pour bleach on it and bag it up.

ToastyFingers · 04/12/2018 21:12

No outdoor bin sadly. No outdoor space at all #flatlife.

icelollycraving · 04/12/2018 21:12

Shove it in a bin on the street?

ToastyFingers · 04/12/2018 21:13

Do the rest of my veggies need to go too? I only went shopping yesterday :(

incallthebloodytime · 04/12/2018 21:16

Carrier bag back to the shop after hanging it on the window outside till the morning?

Refund?

Kokapetl · 04/12/2018 21:16

It's just aphids. My parents used to say extra protein! Shows there are not too many pesticides on the vegetables which is surely a good thing? When I tried growing my own broccoli it was infested with these. If you give it a wash and boil it, most of them will be gone and they won't do you any harm.

ohhelpohnoitsa · 04/12/2018 21:16

Take it back to the cooo. Let them deal with it.

cardibach · 04/12/2018 21:17

The plastic is sealed. How are they going to spread? Also rest of the fruit bowl? You keep still wrapped broccoli in the fruit bowl?

GearChange · 04/12/2018 21:21

At least you didn’t cut a bit of broccoli in half, eat one half and then look down to see an earwig in the other half Sad

CasperGutman · 04/12/2018 21:28

At least you didn’t cut a bit of broccoli in half, eat one half and then look down to see an earwig in the other half.

Better still, look down to see half an earwig....

ToastyFingers · 04/12/2018 21:36

I don't usually keep still wrapped broccoli in the fruit (and veg) bowl but I was in a rush yesterday and didn't unwrap it.
I don't feel so bad if it's just aphids. I didn't want it to be some sort of grim flea though.

I probably should take it back to the co-op but for the sake of 60p I'm not sure I want to carry it around with me. I'll definitely let them know though.
I think I'm just going to put it in the public bin down the road, I feel a bit silly and squeamish about boiling or freezing it.

Jesus wept anyone would think vegetables were grown outside in fields with all them bugs all over it.

Sadik · 04/12/2018 21:44

As a pp said, it's only aphids. If you soak it in heavily salted water, it'll kill them & they'll float off, then you can cook the broccoli & it'll be absolutely fine.
