Meditation at school

My DD's school have recently decided to 'meditate'. They meditate for one minute per age of children. My DD is 7 so her class meditate for 7 minutes. She is in main stream state school.

During that time the children must sit in silence with their eyes shut and a 'do not disturb' sign is placed on the class room door. The whole school meditate at the same time each day.

It's not an AIBU, but I had never heard of this? I'm interested in whether any other schools or children practise school meditation? I guess it's not a bad thing to do, just thought it was strange in a school setting? Or maybe it's widespread and it's just me!

I recall reading an article about how much it improved concentration and behaviour.

It is becoming more and more common in schools. Especially primary schools. I think it's amazing and it should be across the board. Mindfullness is such an important part of life.

I have started some art therapy in my school. Working with a small group of students on a 121 basis. They so far love it.

My DS does it, as well as yoga and quiet reflection time. I think its brilliantZ

Wish our school did

Do they just sit in silence day dreaming or is it guided meditation?

I went to school in the dark ages....and at ages 4 to 7, we had to put our arms on the desk, rest our heads on our hands and doze/relax for ten minutes every afternoon.

Well being is a good lesson to learn. Meditation, reflexology, yoga are all great ways to help children focus on themselves and find coping strategies for stress and anger.

Brilliant idea. I think teaching children mindfulness is very important

Sounds great!

So great. Our team now do it at work too once a week. WISH I’d known about yoga and meditation as a teen especially.

I'm not in favour of meditation in school as although it is likely helpful for many pupils, it is not always good for everyone.

My DN has quite bad mental health and cannot meditate as her bad thoughts intensify when she's not able to distract herself.

I think better mental health understanding in school from the staff, really good pastoral support and much shorter waiting times for camhs would be preferable, having struggled greatly with all these things with my son who has SEN and mental health problems.

My children used to do a mini exercise class for 20 mins just before school started and that was really helpful to wake them up and get them ready to learn.
