Is there anything I can do about this? (Card fraud)

Posting for traffic.

Ordered a new debit card on Friday, apparently it was delivered yesterday. I never received it. Only noticed today that somebody had a big shopping spree courtesy of me while checking my online banking.

Rang the bank, they were very good and instantly refunded me and said they would open a case but the person I spoke to didn't really seem like much would come from it.

I'm in a flatshare and obviously I don't want to point fingers when I have very little information but I'm obviously really angry and concerned that this person is going to get away with it.

There was a big big purchase from BooHoo so I gave them a ring to check if they'd be able to tell me the delivery address because at least then I'd know if it was a dodgy postman, neighbour or what I'm really dreading; my flatmate. They couldn't give me any information.

Now I've thought about it, a few months ago I had a few parcels delivered that never turned up, got it re-delivered to work and put it down to dodgy royal mail, happened twice and since I've just got everything delivered to work instead but then this all adds up to someone fucking going through all my post.

Obviously I'll have everything in future delivered to work and look out for any parcels for my flatmate (obviously I still don't know for certain)

Anybody got any advice or had any similar experiences? I just don't want whoever it is to get away with it and obviously now I feel quite unsafe where I'm living

Aren't people shitheads. It could well be one of your flat mates
. It could even be someone from Royal Mail. These things aren't unheard of. I don't trust the post. I'm.the sort of person. I'd drive 200 miles to deliver something. Not because of stealing more because you hear of things getting lost in the post.
My bank let you pick your card up from the Branch. Is that an option for you. When you order your new card.

Interception fraud is very common and is most likely to be as a result of hacking on the merchant’s website.

Iwantedapeanut · 04/12/2018 20:52

My new card is getting delivered to work instead so I'm okay with that. It's just the fact that someone gets to keep 100's of pounds worth of stuff that really pisses me off Angry

Could the Bank not report it to the police, to whom presumably BooHoo would be able to disclose details?

Purpleartichoke · 04/12/2018 20:55

It’s surprisingly common. First person to steal my card used it to pay their own electric bill. It happens every few years, mostly just the number, not the physical card. I just chalk it up to one of life’s little inconveniences. I never let my bank issue me a debit card so my account can’t be accessed directly. I always keep two credit cards active so if one is stolen, I have a backup while I wait for the replacement.

This is why it makes sense to shop with merchants that have links to reputable banks as their web controls tend to be tighter. M&S John lewis Apple etc.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 04/12/2018 21:01

I'd collect your new card from the bank..... and I'd buy a digital safe for your room to keep valuables/cards in. Just in case.

It could literally be anyone, OP, that's the scary thing and far more likely to be random.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/12/2018 21:02

What Leeds said.
Also it must say which items have been ordered, so. Let's so its a red dress size 12. A pair of black boots.
A pair of black trousers and a silver top a blue coatand one of your flat mates starts, rocking up in those clothes. It won't be hard to peice it together, will it.

Purple Really?
OP definitely get all your bankcards/parcels delivered to your work from now on.

I agree OP - the banks could actually do more but they seem to have done a cost/benefit analysis in favour of leaving criminals to it.

badlydrawnperson · 04/12/2018 21:11

Could the Bank not report it to the police, to whom presumably BooHoo would be able to disclose details? Good luck with that - sadly doesn't seem to be treated as important.

Iwantedapeanut · 04/12/2018 21:14

It doesn't say what's been ordered, just how much they've spent. I'd love more details at least then I could decide if it was likely to be my flatmate or not but nobody will give me anything without an order number

My sympathies, I have had my scammed.before. Interestly it was a new card that I only used once ever on a major website. The person used it for takeaway deliveries and online shopping. Bank could not share details but made me report it to the Police so they could access details of delivery easier.

HeddaGarbled · 04/12/2018 21:21

It’s just so common and frequent (several fraudulent transactions reported every day according to the person I spoke to at my local bank branch), neither the banks nor the police have the resources to investigate individual incidents.

badlydrawnperson · 05/12/2018 19:05

neither the banks nor the police have the resources to investigate individual incidents.

The Banks have the resources, they just choose to spend it other stuff, like CEO bonuses.
