AIBU to believe that my social security number is my national insurance number?

I'm applying for a job that asks for my social security number. I'm not getting any benefits so I don't know what this is.

Is it the same as my national insurance number?

Is it a US job application? We don't have social security numbers - a national insurance number would be our equivalent; but usually it's not required of non-US citizens to fill that in.

I thought Social Security was a US thing? Is it an international company?

Yeah, "Social security number" is in the USA. The UK's national insurance number is broadly equivalent. If it's a British company, they've probably just used an American application form template and not bothered changing it. I'd write the NINO.

No, UK job. I'll give my NI number.

Yep it means NI numbers. Some recruitment/job sites are built from US systems and sometimes the language settings are hardwired in, so cant be amended to reflect location specific terms such as National Insurance
