To ask if you'd prefer a sterling silver or white gold ring

DP is getting me a ring for Christmas. The design I like is a sterling silver one from Pandora but I'm worried about the quality as it seems so cheap compared to other rings - it's £55. A few of the reviews say stones have fallen out quickly, although on the whole it has good reviews.

I'm also wondering about tarnishing? I'll be wearing it every day and don't want to have to take it off every time I wash my hands. I thought a white gold ring might be a better option and easier to care for, problem is I can't find a design in white gold I like as much as the Pandora one.

I haven't worn a ring since early teens so unsure whether I should compromise on the design or metal Confused Blush

Platinum.

My wedding ring is also sterling silver and is fine after six and a half years. Engagement ring is white gold, the yellow wearing through a little now, but I don’t often wear it anymore.

I’d get it. If the stones fall out you might have to pay just as much to repair it though.

I had a white and yellow gold wedding ring, wore it for 17 years, rarely removed it and the white gold is still white.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 03/12/2018 23:13

White gold is naturally yellowish and will need to be replated as it goes yellowey after a while.

I like silver and think a standard 750 silver is equivalent to 18 carat gold with regards to strength.

Silver scratches more easily though but both can be repolished again. Silver is less durable than gold.

I wear two silver rings all the time, one I've had for 13 years and is still lovely and shiny, the other one, funnily enough, is from Pandora and still looks like new (I've had it for a year and a half.) If you wear it all the time the oils in your skin stop it from oxidising.

Also, depending on what a white gold is made from, it's not much harder than sterling silver.

WineIsMyMainVice · 03/12/2018 23:28

My engagement and wedding rings are both white gold and I wouldn’t go for that again given the choice. The colours change all the time and you have to have them rodeum plated (not sure if that’s how you spell it!!) to keep them looking good. Saying that, they are durable in that they don’t change shape or get dented etc....

PoutySprout · 03/12/2018 23:31

White gold would put me in hospital. It’s sterling silver or platinum only for me.

That’s not true. White gold is usually relatively soft and will wear away. Platinum/titanium won’t.

Awyeah · 03/12/2018 23:33

I have a silver Pandora band set with small stones. I've had it over 2 years and I don't take it off at all (so wear to bed, in shower). It's still perfect so I wouldn't rule it out if you really like it.

cannotmakemymindup · 03/12/2018 23:45

White gold can give reactions so it's not quite as good as it sounds.
Do you react to nickel or cheap 'costume' jewellery? If yes then your skin will eat away at the white gold quicker and you'll probably have a reaction.
I have learnt this the hard way.

Definitely seconding/thirding palladium or platinum, both amazing metals for jewellery. Silver is just not a good metal for wear either for tarnishing or your skin as it reacts. White gold is a bit of a fudge as mentioned. Unfortunately, the best answer in this case is an expensive one.

blackcat86 · 03/12/2018 23:55

I'd go with white gold. I chose it for my engagement and wedding ring because it's easy to get them redipped later on if they start to look scratched and tarnished.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 04/12/2018 09:48

I wouldn't bother with white gold. I haven't got any white gold rings but the necklace and bangle I have got have to be replated and it's a pain. I'd go for silver or palladium.

user1471590586 · 04/12/2018 11:35

I have worn a silver ring for over 20 years with no problems. If you wear it everyday it doesn't tarnish. The problem with white gold is that you periodically have to have it replated with rhodium to maintain the whiteness.

UtterlyDesperate · 04/12/2018 15:20

@Drogosnextwife it's about fifty quid to get a white gold ring redone at my local jeweller

RoseRuby26 · 04/12/2018 23:51

About £30 to have my white gold wedding ring re plated. I need it done once every 2 years roughly. Sometimes more frequently. I'm in Essex.

ATowelAndAPotato · 05/12/2018 06:50

If your tight on budget now, why not get the silver ring you like (from Pandora, or elsewhere) and then upgrade to platinum in a few years?
We couldn’t afford to have a custom Wedding ring made to match my original engagement ring, so I bought a silver ring from Pandora for when we got married and will be getting the custom rings made for our 5 year anniversary. I wear my engagement ring on the other hand in the meantime.

Jasmin82 · 05/12/2018 07:03

An ex bought me a titanium ring. It looks lovely, is durable and doesn't tarnish.

SuperSange · 05/12/2018 07:03

I have a palladium engagement ring worn next to a silver pandora 'half eternity' set ring in silver. I never take them off, you can't tell the difference between them in terms of material, unlike a white gold ring I have which looks yellow next to them. I'd never buy it again.
