To be upset with PT or is it my fault ?

ISeeARainbow · 03/12/2018 15:36

My DP & I have a PT twice a week. We’ve been going to him for a while & we all get on great.

A couple of weeks ago we had one of our sessions in a wood.
Towards the end of the session PT gave us an exercise to do. I stated I really didn’t want to do it but got lots of ‘ come on Rainbow you’ll be fine you don’t want Mr Rainbow beating you do you ? ‘
Anyway I ended slipping & gouging my skin down to bone ‘
I ended up in A & E , I’m currently attending the doctors 3x a week for wound care, I’m on antibiotics as the wound is infected, I can’t walk any long distance because it starts bleeding (it bled through the dressing & my trousers last week after 10 minutes of walking) & I can’t wear jeans etc because the dressing is so big. The nurse said this morning that I can expect a very long recovery.
We are due to have an European city break next week which I now feel will involve lots of coffee drinking rather than sight seeing.
He’s asked us to leave a review on his FB page. I do like him but think he didn’t take client care into consideration

It wasn't really his fault. Just very very unfortunate. Sounds awful, poor you. I hope you can still enjoy your trip away and wish you a speedy recovery.

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/12/2018 15:39

Was the slipping his fault though? Do you think he was careless in some way? I'd have thought that exercising outdoors will always carry some risk of slipping.

Shoxfordian · 03/12/2018 15:40

It's his job to encourage you to exercise!

It was an accident, accidents happen

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 03/12/2018 15:42

It's an accident and unfortunate but as a PT he should have liability insurance covering instances like this - unless you singed a waiver.

geekone · 03/12/2018 15:44

Hmmm

Why didn’t you want to do it? Was it because it looked slippery and dangerous? Or more likely it looked too hard and you were tired. PT is there to push would you have preferred he took your money and then said ok if you don’t want to then don’t? Could the accident have been your fault? Did you do it in a safe area like your DH? Was your DH finding it difficult? Does your DH think it was the PTs fault? Did you sign and injury disclaimer before you started with him?

Lots of questions, but I think you are probably being unreasonable to affect someone’s livelihood because you fell during an excerise.

Unsureofmyselfx · 03/12/2018 15:44

It was an accident. Genuinely don’t know what you expect. You could have fallen off an exercise bike and broke your neck just as easily.

Unicornandbows · 03/12/2018 15:44

I don't think it was his fault. Accidents happen and its his job to push and encourage you out of your comfort zone, otherwise what's the point of a pt. It is unfortunate that you ended up with the injury. Hope you get well soon

Valasca · 03/12/2018 15:45

I’d call him on the phone and tell him you wanted to give him constructive feedback rather than write about it on FB. Then tell him how he made you feel when you said you didn’t want to do something and he pressed on. It would be good for him to get constructive feedback because he may have a hard time distinguishing between A client feeling lazy and needing motivation and another who might feel bullied into doing something they’re not comfortable with.

If he thanks you for your honesty and maybe explains himself, then I’d continue with him. If anything else, I’d stop using his services.

Houseonahill · 03/12/2018 15:45

Unless he was telling you to do something actually dangerous or has been buttering the floor I don't really see how it's his fault sorry.

PinkHeart5914 · 03/12/2018 15:46

It was an a accident, unfortunate but I don’t see how the pt is to blame

skybluee · 03/12/2018 15:48

What was the exercise/what did you fall onto?
I hope it heals well x

Nanny0gg · 03/12/2018 15:48

Were the conditions unsafe?

FoodGloriousFud · 03/12/2018 15:48

As others have said it was an accident. If you felt uncomfortable doing something then you should have said so.

Satsumaeater · 03/12/2018 15:48

unless you singed a waiver

Such a waiver is not enforceable under English law (or many other jurisdictions).

However, I think the OP just slipped, it's not the PT's fault.

ISeeARainbow · 03/12/2018 15:52

Thanks all for your comments. I certainly wouldn’t leave him bad feedback I’d rather just not leave anything.
It was a very slippery bench which is why I didn’t want to do it. I slipped initially & stopped which is when he was ‘encouraging ‘ me.
I guess I just wanted a whinge as I’m feeling fed up. I’m also feeling a bit vain about not being able to wear party dresses over the festive period 😂😂

Unless he was getting you to do something stupid like handstand on a swiss ball I'm going with not his fault.

kittykarate · 03/12/2018 15:53

Half the magic of a PT is having someone to push you just a little bit beyond what you think is possible. A good PT should risk assess the environment and think, if it is muddy/slippy/uneven, I should probably lead with this rather than put it at the end of the session when people are tired, and are getting clumsy because fine motor control might be lost due to fatigue.

Some PT though can be too pushy/bullying. It took me a long time to learn to say 'No! I'm not being a lazy mare but this is too much'.

Toughtips · 03/12/2018 15:56

Did he see you slip off the bench? If so he was bu to encourage you to continue where it was unsafe. If he didn't know though then he didn't do anything wrong.

Shit for you but chalk it up to experience. You're paying for his services so if you really don't wanna do something next time don't.

Loopytiles · 03/12/2018 15:56

If the bench was very obviously slippery and you raised concerns then he may be at fault, but unless you have lost income and have access to free legal advice probably too much hassle and expense to pursue.

RayRayBidet · 03/12/2018 15:56

Nothing wrong with having a whinge, I'm not surprised you are feeling very upset and fed up.

AdamNichol · 03/12/2018 15:59

Did he get you to do something that forseeably ended with you in A&E, or did you Inspector Cluseau you're way there? If the former, he needs that feedback but maybe not as a permanent stain on his reputation?

AromaticSpices · 03/12/2018 16:00

I don't think it's his fault as such but perhaps as a PP said he should have introduced this exercise at the beginning of the session.

I can totally get why you're pissed off though, I would be too. Don't think there's any recourse though unfortunately.

Loopytiles · 03/12/2018 16:02

There could be legal recourse if he was actually negligent, eg not checking out the environment or listening to concerns.

recently · 03/12/2018 16:03

I'm not surprised you're upset. I had a similar experience actually that led me to have a life-changing injury. If I had known what I know now, I would probably have sued (and I don't say that lightly). I'm surprised he wants you to write a review - sounds like he failed to risk assess.
