Playing with ds today (4mo) and he always reaches to grab with his left hand (nothing wrong with right hand or arm just seems to prefer his left)

Am I reading to much into this or has anyone else though about this just interested to know

Both our kids are left handed and it was definitely apparent by 4

Justmuddlingalong · 03/12/2018 15:21

My eldest was about that age when I noticed he flavoured his left hand. Health visitor rolled her eyes. He's in his 20s and yes. A leftie.

glamglamgirl · 03/12/2018 15:21

I thought this was gonna be about Jeremy Cornyn

DroningOn · 03/12/2018 15:22

Just re read, 4mo not 4yr.

Cant say it was something we noticed at that age

AragonsGirl · 03/12/2018 15:22

Both of mine have had a preference for their left hand at quite a young age, using it to pick up food, hold spoons etc. My 4yo is definitely a leftie now she’s started to write etc, and my 15mo seems to be following her.

almightysockbandit · 03/12/2018 15:24

glam girl that actually made me lol

My DD kept switching hand preferences almost until she started school (I would say she was ambidextrous but there's not much dexterous about toddlers Grin) at which point it finally became clear she was a lefty.

almightysockbandit · 03/12/2018 15:26

Yeah I was just wondering I'm right handed but dp is a definate leftie, was just wondering to myself if you can tell from such an early age it will be interesting (wll for me doubt for anyone else lol) to see if it changes as he gets older

My DD is about to turn 3 and I think she's a leftie. Suspected from maybe age 1? They use both hands a lot when really little. 4 months seems really early to tell.

Alfie190 · 03/12/2018 15:31

I also thought this was going to be about a new BF with certain political leanings.

Yes, maybe you have a leftie. Smile

Rowgtfc72 · 03/12/2018 16:08

Dd was definitely a leftie by six months old. If you passed her something in her right hand she'd immediately transfer it to her left.

Poodles1980 · 03/12/2018 16:10

I have a 5 yo leftie and a 5 month old potential leftie who also is already favouring his left hand. I’m also left handed so we are taking over the world

PortiaCastis · 03/12/2018 16:19

I'm left handed as is dd and I noticed that she was using her left hand prominently about age 3

iabvvu · 03/12/2018 16:23

Hand dominance shouldn't be established before 18 months - might be worth seeing someone in case there's an underlying reason like right sided weakness

puzzledlady · 03/12/2018 16:49

Too young to tell.

Talkinpeece · 03/12/2018 16:52

I knew which hand DD would use by the time she was 8 weeks. Wrote it in her baby book as HV was cynical
I was correct

I knew that DS would be ambidextrous right away.
He finally became "handed" when he was 4 years

Ohyesiam · 03/12/2018 16:52

Mine’s a leftie, and it wasn’t apparent till he was about 19 months and scribbling with crayons.
I was on the lookout with early grabbing as I’m a leftie and wanted at least one of mine to take after me.

bruffin · 03/12/2018 16:53

DD was a leftie by the age of 2, as she burnt her left had and it had be bandaged for a few weeks. Swapped to her right but as soon as the bandages came off she went back to using her left.

Talkinpeece · 03/12/2018 16:54

Hogwash. It is set in the womb.

Spiggity · 03/12/2018 17:03

DS is left handed. I have twins (b/g). My boy looks and acts so much like my brother did when he was young it's crazy. I said to DH when they were babies that it wouldn't surprise me at all if DS was left handed and dyslexic like my brother was. They are 8 now and yes he's left handed and dyslexic.

I think you just know. In our case it was handy because I recognised signs as a toddler so spoke to his teacher and she kept and eye on him. Then recommending a specialist who helped with reading and writing. Because we knew early we got help early and he's fine.

kitkatsky · 03/12/2018 17:05

Mine was left handed as a baby but def right handed by time she was 5

Chocolatebourbons · 03/12/2018 17:05

So what if he is? I'm left handed too.

Confusedbeetle · 03/12/2018 17:07

Dominant hand is settled at about 18 months

Talkinpeece · 03/12/2018 17:10

Dominant hand is settled at about 18 months
Link please

as my own baby book states which hand I used a long time before that

PS : OP, leftie is not useful outside political situations Grin

Spiggity · 03/12/2018 17:15

Chocolatebourbons

I don't think the OP was saying there was anything 'wrong' with being a leftie. She was just curious when other parents knew.
