Elf on the shelf!

Yes, I am completely unreasonable. But how on Earth do those of you who do it manage to convince your child that the elf is real when they haven't had one for the past X many years of their life?

I did wonder if the first people to do Santa had the same issue, but decided of course not. Because the various incarnations are based on a real person who did anonymously deliver gifts.

My eldest mentioned having an elf last month so after 6 years of avoiding it, I cracked and got one. They love it. It's a bit of a faff but I love seeing their reaction. I think my kids are gullible Grin

It just utterly intrigues me.

Tbh I don't have the energy to put into it but I do enjoy seeing my friends' posts of what their elf has been up to.

I also don't get the elf behaving badly. Maybe I'm going to have to read the EOTS story book and find out why that is.

I also think maybe belief is just part of the magic of childhood.

we have one - a cheap ebay elf that we got a few years back - its a bit cheeky (hiding money in the sofa, hanging from the garland, drinking my gin, opening one of DDs small gifts...) but she has a giggle every morning looking for it and seeing what its been up to - doesn't believe in Santa any more, but the elf is our bit of fun throughout december!

OMG @IncyWincyGrownUp that is great!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 04/12/2018 17:37

I can’t claim it’s mine, it was a Facebook steal. I’m sharing the love like you wouldn’t believe though. All elves need to be free.

(And I need to not have to hide half my friends list every December!)

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 04/12/2018 18:04

i bought one this year, my baby is 21

Mostly I have been tormenting dh and the dog with it.

Currently it is sitting on one of the door wreaths, plotting. :o

It’s a creepy pervert that sees everything (including what I don’t want my OH to see) and I won’t have one in the house Grin

Timeforabiscuit · 04/12/2018 18:15

Its been 9 years, 9 long long years of the elf (not the creepy fucker, a nice stuffed one)

If you havent started it - just think about the enduring nature of tradition!

Totally using incys post to explain a drop in visits, but as now the eldest is in on the act for the youngest, its turned into a bit of a competition - and the youngest still squeaks with excitement when elf gets in a pickle.

Timeforabiscuit · 04/12/2018 18:17

Ps elfs finest moment was when he got confused about when i told the kids to tidy their rooms (they didnt) so the elf "helped" by making a strategic giant pile in the middle of the bedroom.
