To ask if you'd get your contraceptive implant from gp nurse or gum clinic?

Just curious really. I want to get a contraceptive implant and I'm not sure whether to go to the nurse at the doctors' surgery or go to the local sexual health clinic. I suppose I'm trying to base my decision on who is likely to do it most frequently and therefore be better practised at the procedure...

Sh clinic I'd have thought :)

ifoundthebread · 02/12/2018 21:47

At my local drop in family planning clinic only the dr is qualified to insert the implant, so at the drop in appointment the nurse goes through the details with you and makes you an appointment to see the Dr.

I got mine put in at the GPs. Really straightforward. By the time it needed taking out I'd moved house and they didn't do them at new GP practise. Had to go to walk in at GUM, wait hours to see someone who then made me an app on another day to have it removed. It was a right faff.

Sexual health clinic as my gp doesn't do them.
Had to call and make an appointment as they didn't do drop in appointments for implant removal / putting in

Ah, sounds like I might just have to go with whoever does them. Thanks for replies all!

Sexual health clinic about 6 years ago. It never felt right, wasn't easy to feel etc so I asked for it out. They took ages finding it, for 45 minutes the dr was digging about in my arm and injecting more and more to keep it numb. After a while there were 3 people in the room all saying I'd need to go for an scan to locate it, one dr was convinced I'd not got one in but thankfully they finally got it. I now have a much larger than expected scar on my arm. I guess the point of my story is is that even people at clinics who do them all the time can occasionally insert it wrong Confused

brookshelley · 02/12/2018 23:05

IFind out who does them more regularly if you have the choice and go with that. My GP’s nurse messed up my smear twice so I didn’t trust them with anything! SH clinic was brilliant.

2isabella2 · 02/12/2018 23:06

My GP did mine

Winegumaddict · 02/12/2018 23:06

As above GUM clinic as the dr at my surgery is part time and appointments are impossible to get so I went where it was easiest and quickest to get one.

WomanAndProud · 02/12/2018 23:09

Go to whoever promises they'll remove it IMMEDIATELY if and when you want.

BonnieandHyde · 02/12/2018 23:15

Gum.

They do them every day alllll day. GP nurses might only do one every few months.

Bigonesmallone3 · 02/12/2018 23:19

Saw a GP initially and then nurse put it in a week later..

Notquiteagandt · 02/12/2018 23:24

My gp doesnt do them only gum clinic. You see nurse who then screens your suitibility then books you in with a dr. They do it all day so should be well practised.

YerAuntFanny · 02/12/2018 23:24

I've had 3, all done by the nurse at GP surgery. All easy insertions and removals with the exception of #1 which imbedded itself in the muscle so took a bit more time and numbing to fetch it!

Never been told to go elsewhere.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 02/12/2018 23:30

If you get the choice I’d go to the gum clinic as they’re more likely to have more availability and they’re more experienced as they do them day in day out. GPs usually (but not always, there are exceptions) do very few clinics eg one a month.

I’m a trainee doctor and have always seen excellent staff at GPs and GUM clinics, however, so if one is massively more convenient then I’d go for either.

Mine was fitted at a gum clinic as my village GP couldn’t fit one for 5 weeks. I got it fitted within 3 days of ringing up

EustaciaPieface · 02/12/2018 23:41

My GP’s surgery did my original one, but now on number five and the last few have all been at my Sexual Health clinic - they have nurses who are real experts so I feel safe and in very good hands.

StealthPolarBear · 03/12/2018 05:35

Yes not all GPs do them. They're funded by the council who sometimes have contracts for GPs to fit, sometimes not.
