I'm got the cold. Admittedly I'm not dying. But snotty headachy sneezy and achy all over. In bed at present.

I'm a nurse doing baby vaccinations the next few days. Clinic looks dire ( super busy lots of teeny babies needing jags) No one else will do them in my absence ,so I'll need to run catch up clinics in the next few weeks..
I could 'man up' but feel really crap today
Stupid strong work ethic always makes me feel guilty.
Mental health also not great at the moment... but I'm a smile and you'd never know.
Be kind please...

Yeah just let loads of families down at the last minute. You have a cold not numonia.

Anniegetyourgun · 02/12/2018 15:59

And breathe the germs all over the babies? Hmm.

MrsChopper · 02/12/2018 16:00

I'd call in sick if I were you. You're not going to do anyone a favour turning up poorly. And the last thing the little ones need after their jabs is your stinking cold!

Whatsforu · 02/12/2018 16:03

Helpful comment userHmm pneumonia by the way. I think you should take some time as pp said young babies don't need to be in the firing line for extra bugs.

Refilona · 02/12/2018 16:05

Sorry but “numonia” made me giggle!
If you don’t think you’ll be contagious and you are well enough to go to work, try and go - it’ll suck for the kids and parents and also for yourself to have to catch up later!

Wauden · 02/12/2018 16:05

Take care of yourself. I would call in sick, so that you can heal and not pass on bugs! Flowers

Governoress86 · 02/12/2018 16:10

I agree with taking the day off too. It's not fair on the babies. Waiting a week or so for jabs won't be a problem. I certainly wouldn't mind waiting a week for my baby to have her jabs if it meant not catching any other bugs.
Get some much needed rest 😊

coffeeforone · 02/12/2018 16:12

I'd see how you feel in the morning. It will be a bit of a pain to let patients down but not the end of the world, especially if it's to avoid passing on a contagious bug to newborns.

Thesmallthings · 02/12/2018 16:14

Normally I'd say go

But your in close contact with babies who my suffer more from catching it esp when having their jabs.

I'd say call in sick

NoThankyouHun · 02/12/2018 16:19

Babies can get colds from anywhere. I'd say YABU because the jabs are more important than the chance of a baby catching a cold. Also you're a nurse woman/man up.

blackcat86 · 02/12/2018 16:23

I'd call in sick. I wouldn't want you vaccinating my baby when you're full of cold. Don't listen to people talking about pneumonia when they can't actually spell it.

JustDanceAddict · 02/12/2018 16:26

See how you are in morning?if you have a temperature don’t go in, otherwise I’d dose up and get in with it (as long as you’re not sneezing too much).,

Feefeetrixabelle · 02/12/2018 16:27

Better a day off tomorrow and run a catch up when you won’t pass the cold on. It may feel like a cold now but you don’t know that it won’t become ‘numonia’ or a chest infection or similar. Plus I think if more people took a day for a cold they would spread as much as they do and you can return fully rested.

Elphie54 · 02/12/2018 16:28

You could wear a mask so you don’t spread germs....

recklessruby · 02/12/2018 16:28

I say stay at home. You feel lousy and will recover more quickly if you take care of yourself.
If I was a parent of a small baby I wouldn't want a nurse sneezing germs near them. My ds was 8 weeks prem so I had to be super cautious.
I say this as someone with a strong work ethic who struggled back to work too early after flu and ended up with pneumonia and more time off than if I had just stayed at home an extra few days.

bringincrazyback · 02/12/2018 16:29

Surely it's better to call in sick to avoid passing your cold on to the babies, amazed anyone's suggesting otherwise. Feel better soon!

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/12/2018 16:29

Also you're a nurse woman/man up.

Are we supposed to be superhuman and not get ill like other people? IMO as a nurse you should make every effort to not spread infection to others, especially babies.

Feefeetrixabelle · 02/12/2018 16:30

Wouldn’t spread as much that should say bloody autocorrect . 😂

recklessruby · 02/12/2018 16:30

Sorry numonia

Zulor · 02/12/2018 16:31

I wouldn't want you vaccinating my baby with a heavy cold. Although I guess, if you and they do a lot of hand washing you might not pass it on. And while the OP might not have 'numonia', a small baby can quickly get very ill from a common cold.
You're sick, you can't help it, you're in a job working with tiny peoples' immune systems, I say ring in sick.
Btw there's a nasal spray I take at the first sign of a cold and it has not failed me yet - it's called First Defence. It really does actually work in preventing a cold develop.

papayya · 02/12/2018 16:32

I wouldn't appreciate it if you passed your cold onto my baby and would rather the inconvenience of rearranging the appt. My baby was 8 weeks prem though not sure if others wouldn't be as bothered if their baby was term.

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/12/2018 16:32

You could wear a mask so you don’t spread germs

Masks are effective for only around 30 seconds. As soon as they are breathed through they become permeable.

Sirzy · 02/12/2018 16:32

Unless you can swap roles with another nurse in the practise (which I doubt) for the day then you need to phone in sick. As annoying as having the injections rearranged will be it’s much less of an issue than ending up with a poorly baby!

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 02/12/2018 16:34

As a mum I would be angry if someone turned up to work with a bug like that and immunised my small baby. Stay home and put your feet up!

sunnysunchild · 02/12/2018 16:35

Hmm sadly not superhuman!! its not fair on the babies if I go into work with horrid cold and risk passing it on to them... But also not fair on the babies if they miss their jags. What to do?....
Meanwhile I guess i'll dose up on Lemsips and hope I feel better tomorrow.
Wah. Could cry.
