To think your life must be pretty empty if you're celebrating Christmas already?

Maybe it's me, but I think 2 weeks before Christmas and one week after, is ample time to have your tree/ lights up, be watching Christmas films (if you're that way inclined), listen to Christmas songs, have Christmas nights out/ dress up in Christmas jumpers etc. This weekend my Facebook has been inundated with 'Look at my lovely tree' statuses and today I've just driven past about 30 Santas power walking, my kids are begging me to get a tree up (which will be dead by Christmas). I just think you need to enjoy life now and not always be looking forward to the next celebration.

AIBU and a miserable git, or do i have a point?

Yes YABU. Change your name to Miserablemarigold right now! Grin Grin

Put a tree up on 1st December if you want, fair enough, I can understand enjoying advent and all the Christmas activities in the month of December. We usually a couple of weeks before but these days real trees cost a bomb so why not make the most of them and have them up longer. Plus if you leave it too late and your lights don’t work, try getting some new ones a week before Christmas! There’s only the dregs left.

but if you it it up in November and take it down on Boxing Day I’m going to think it’s wierd. And I might wonder if therr is someone in the family who is terminally ill and might not see It through to Christmas Day. If not, i’ll probably assume you’re a bit dissatisfied with life and are one of these people who are always onto the next thing to see if that fills the gap in their life.

redcarbluecar · 02/12/2018 15:24

I always put my tree and decs up as close to December 1st as I can, as I enjoy the long run-in and making my home look cheery and festive as the weather gets more miserable. I normally take them down straight after new year, as I've had enough by then. I don't feel as though the burning question of life's essential emptiness is particularly related to these little seasonal rituals.

GreenTulips · 02/12/2018 15:25

It's probably the opposite of miserable

You add in the works do the girls night out Christmas shopping and wrapping getting ready for visitors gift buying visit to santa Christmas fair Christmas plays church service

All adds up tonpacked weekends in top of daily life and full time work - and if your unlucky unwell children

LagunaBubbles · 02/12/2018 15:27

just think you need to enjoy life now and not always be looking forward to the next celebration

Its pretty arrogant to assume that people "aren't enjoying life" now just because they've put their trees up! I love the lights and decorations, and enjoy them - and my life - very much., that's why they are up just now!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 02/12/2018 15:27

I think people who do the November/Boxing Day thing are following the shops to be honest. So I would guess you either work in retail or spend a lot of time shopping. If you go to the supermarket on New Year’s Day you can see the first Easter eggs of the year. It actually makes me feel a bit sick, the consumerism.

Teachermommy · 02/12/2018 15:27

We've had a really shit year, and there's not much money around this Christmas so presents won't be as big as always. So we've put the decorations up, because we already have them and it costs us nothing.
We've also been to the Christmas light switch on in our local village and we're just heading to see santa at a free local event.
No harm in making the most of the free stuff the season brings.

YABVU, you're the one with the pretty empty life if you're worrying and whinging about others doing what makes them happy.
Let them get on with it.
Today's been spent putting the Christmas tree up, listening to Christmas songs as we do and I don't care if a miserable random twat thinks it's too early.
You do you.

ItIsChristmasTime · 02/12/2018 15:31

AIBU and a miserable git, or do i have a point?

I think YABU. I usually love Christmas time and have two young children that are just getting into the festivities. If I hadn’t been so busy, the tree and decorations would already be up.

If you had been complaining about Christmas decorations, music, and trees up in shops from September or October, I would agree with you.

Monkeynuts18 · 02/12/2018 15:31

We’ve put our Christmas trees up today, but that’s actually because our lives are so full - if we don’t do it today we won’t do it till the 23rd. I suspect many people are the same.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 02/12/2018 15:31

You are probably both a very nice person and a miserable git. Such is the mystery of the human condition. I know I can be both at the same time. But regarding this Christmas lark, life is long and often filled with various degrees of tedium, crap, hard work, sadness and all sort of grim. In between come sparks of joy and moments filled with meaning. If we are lucky, this will happen spontaneously but sometimes it takes a bit of a shove. If putting your Christmas tree and garland up on the dot of Dec 1st does it for you and makes you fell good then crack on. Personally, I’m all for elongating the pre-Christmas fun as the lull between Dec 25th and New year can be a bit of a let down and the tree and decorations start to look a bit jaded. But then I’m the saddo who has been watching festive films since mid Nov, along with a tin Quality street stolen from the stockpile, so am probably not the best person to ask.

Bluntness100 · 02/12/2018 15:32

I think if your children are begging to put the tree up and your saying. I, then yeah that's fairly miserable.

But for saying folks have empty lives if they put a tree up before you do, well I think that's fairly bitchy and nasty.

So overall, no I woildnt say it's a positive in your favour.

Keep saying no to thr kids op. You wouldn't want people to think their lives were empty now would you.

MotherofDinosaurs · 02/12/2018 15:33

Anyone who doesn't love Christmas is dead inside and can fuck off!

SpaceCadet4000 · 02/12/2018 15:35

If your hypothesis is true, you must be a very callous person to want to make fun of those whose lives are less gilded than your own.

malloo · 02/12/2018 15:36

YANBU People here are very defensive aren't they, trying to prove how busy and meaningful their lives are, hmmm! I don't 'get' Xmas at all since I'm not Christian so it has no meaning for me apart from being a ridiculous irritating spendfest of tat and fake sentiment. People are really sucked in to this 'magical' family nonsense that is peddled, very odd. If you want to spend time with your family, just do it! Why only on 25th Dec surrounded by piles of stuff?! I'm quite grumpy today Grin

I think your life must be pretty empty if you are thinking about what other people are doing.

^^^ This

My 6 trees are up now and fully decorated as every Friday to Sunday in the run up to Christmas Day my DH and I are busy either with the children or our friends so if the trees and the house weren’t decorated now they would never be.

sulflower · 02/12/2018 15:40

Personally I hate the OTT commercialism at this time of year but I like seeing the lights and people's houses lit up and wandering around a Christmas market with a cup of mulled wine or two.

morningtoncrescent62 · 02/12/2018 15:40

Haven't watched any of them (I'm the complete Grinch about Christmas) but I've noticed that a lot of the TV channels have been showing Christmas movies for weeks now, so presumably some people do watch them. Fine if you like that sort of thing.

The only thing I miss is the Sunday afternoon scarey children's TV dramas which used to mark the lead-up to Christmas. Wish they'd bring those back. Nights drawing in, A Box Of Delights on the telly...

CloserIAm2Fine · 02/12/2018 15:41

Why do you get to set the rules?

There are probably people thinking your two weeks before Christmas is far too early!

Stop worrying about what other propke are doing and focus on your own empty life

first Sunday in advent and looking forward to the coming of Christ.

Flowers betty.

Abra1de · 02/12/2018 15:43

Advent is a season of fasting traditionally so none of the chocolate calendars and decoration stuff makes much sense.
