To think your life must be pretty empty if you're celebrating Christmas already?

Maybe it's me, but I think 2 weeks before Christmas and one week after, is ample time to have your tree/ lights up, be watching Christmas films (if you're that way inclined), listen to Christmas songs, have Christmas nights out/ dress up in Christmas jumpers etc. This weekend my Facebook has been inundated with 'Look at my lovely tree' statuses and today I've just driven past about 30 Santas power walking, my kids are begging me to get a tree up (which will be dead by Christmas). I just think you need to enjoy life now and not always be looking forward to the next celebration.

AIBU and a miserable git, or do i have a point?

Yabu.

I’m celebrating Christmas already because I’ve had an absolutely dreadful year, have barely managed to see friends and so have booked myself up to see everyone during December. Along with that comes Christmas music, drinks, food... I’m exhausted already and it’s only the 3rd of the month but thoroughly enjoying seeing friends and having fun. What’s wrong with that?

MelanieCheeks · 03/12/2018 21:04
  1. My dance classes will be finishing soon, so we have a few Christmas oarties over the next fortnight.
  2. I'm in a choir, so we are rehearsing Christmas music and have been for the last while
  3. The Christmas market is on, adding to the atmosphere. It will finish the weekend before Christmas itself.
  4. Trips home for family and to visit family have to be fitted into the available weekends.
5 chocolate advent calendars start on 1st December!

I think it's lovely to spread it out over a few weeks, but only the bits you enjoy.

Blackness78 · 03/12/2018 21:26

Who cares?! Except you?

Glovesick · 03/12/2018 21:35

We have had a tough time since my DD (5) was born. This is the first Xmas we are reasonably settled and happy. We put some deco up this weekend to celebrate being safe in our own home and being able to do what we want how we want it.

OP, you don't know what goes on in other people's lives, so don't be so quick to judge.

nannykatherine · 03/12/2018 21:42

it’s all a sham
jesus wasn’t even born in December
..
it’s just commercialised to get your money

odd that no one else realises that

SoyDora · 03/12/2018 21:45

odd that no one else realises that

Glad you’ve enlightened us all now nannykatherine. I’ll take my tree down ASAP.

littlemeitslyn · 03/12/2018 21:46

Merry we will Scrooge together xxxx

Twinkle8516 · 03/12/2018 21:47

My son is 4 this December, and is a little behind developmentally, and this is the first year he has really understood Xmas and everything, and got excited about it, so we've had our tree up 2 weeks already, been listening to, and singing Xmas songs for about a week already, and I love it.Smile

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/12/2018 21:53

“It’s all a sham
jesus wasn’t even born in December”

But the 3 wise men had a vision from an angel and followed a star, full of anticipation and a promise of an amazing thing happening.

Sounds pretty Christmassy to me.

purplebunny2012 · 03/12/2018 21:58

YANBU, IMO. Although I did watch some Christmas films yesterday... At least I waited until December

msnowtybach · 03/12/2018 22:14

I love the build up to Christmas and I cherish all of the lovely concerts, nativities, services etc with my children.

I probably won't put my tree up quite so early when the dc have grown up and gone, but I'm going to make the very most of it now.

Grilledaubergines · 03/12/2018 22:17

nanny. “No one else realised that”. You mean you’re the only one? Wow. Well done. The only personS EVER. You clever stick, you.

Flowerpot2005 · 03/12/2018 22:24

Clearly OP is the one with no life...

Drogosnextwife · 03/12/2018 22:28

Or stop being so miserable and get a tree for ypur kids. If it makes them happy and it's not hurting anyone.
Don't be so insulting to assume people's loves must be empty!

Birdie6 · 03/12/2018 22:45

It's a festive season, not a festive day.

Woooman · 03/12/2018 22:57

I'm not sure how you've made the link between an empty life and what date a person puts their Christmas decorations up. Let's live and let live, eh?

pinkpantherpink · 03/12/2018 23:00

Tis the season to be jolly....

BatF1nk · 03/12/2018 23:03

I'm with you op

I think the ideal time is this weekend - so it'll be, what, the 8th? It's a touch early but it's nice for the kids etc etc and it means I get to enjoy my new (and rather extravagant) baubles and ornaments

Actually the 8th looks too early now I look at it. Maybe the following Friday. 14th

But people putting Christmas trees up in November need to be shot at dawn

Ambernectarine · 03/12/2018 23:04
  • Chavvy idiots put their crappy nasty trees up mid November because they have the mindset of children. They can't wait. Don't buy into it. Do it your way.*

Well said! Because, as we all know, the true meaning of Christmas is sneering at those from a (perceived) different socio-economic background.

Bravo.

Ambernectarine · 03/12/2018 23:10

Yep, those Romans had their eyes on my purse as far back as 336AD. You have to admire their foresight, really. But then they invented underfloor heating... True pioneers.

BitchQueen90 · 03/12/2018 23:10

People who care so much about what other people do baffle me. How exactly does somebody putting their decorations up early impact anyone else's life? Confused

Summerisdone · 03/12/2018 23:17

I'm an early celebrator; firstly I struggle with getting through the winter and remaining happy and positive, so I use the excitement of Christmas to at least get me through to the shit that is January and February.
Secondly, I feel a lot of excitement (and money) for just one day feels a bit anti-climatic so I like to make the most of it and enjoy it as a whole month rather than just a day (or week).
Finally, putting up the tree and the decs (especially with small children) takes enough bloody effort that I will without a doubt be getting the most out of them before I take them back down again... if I went to that much effort to then just take it all back down within a couple weeks I'd feel a bit pissed tbh Grin

jade9390 · 04/12/2018 01:47

The Christmas market in my city started the first week of November which is far too soon but if stall holders who are usually small business people make some money, who cares. I hate Christmas but my life is not so empty that I am bothered by other people enjoying themselves. One of my friends is a priest, Christmas is a Christian festival, it is actually advent which starts on the 30th Nov, so she writes a piece about it everyday. Advent involves celebrating the coming of Christ daily devotionals, along with lighting an advent candle, having calendars, putting up decorations, wreaths and trees. Mass is celebrated for 4 Sundays before Christmas. It was early and I am not a Christian but I happened to be in East Europe, so sent her some relevant decorations made by crafts people end of November, she was thrilled. There are different traditions in different countries. So while you think people putting up decorations now is just due to Christmas being commercial, it actually is not. I bet you do not criticise things like Eid going on for so long because that would not be politically correct. For most people, it relates more to pagan times and the winter feast which was celebrated before this country was Christian. I guess we would have been preparing and storing food since harvest time for it and winter. Christmas makes people happy and if they are out doing charity things and thinking about others for a month before, that can only be a good thing.

Mollypolly123 · 04/12/2018 02:43

Not quite right, the whole so called nativity story has been altered, it's not what the Bible says

selepele · 04/12/2018 02:47

hey mrs scrooge lol

I was watching some program earlier about people who put up xmas trees in july, some guy has it all year round, you would hate if he was your neighbour haha
