To think your life must be pretty empty if you're celebrating Christmas already?

Maybe it's me, but I think 2 weeks before Christmas and one week after, is ample time to have your tree/ lights up, be watching Christmas films (if you're that way inclined), listen to Christmas songs, have Christmas nights out/ dress up in Christmas jumpers etc. This weekend my Facebook has been inundated with 'Look at my lovely tree' statuses and today I've just driven past about 30 Santas power walking, my kids are begging me to get a tree up (which will be dead by Christmas). I just think you need to enjoy life now and not always be looking forward to the next celebration.

AIBU and a miserable git, or do i have a point?

I love xmas always have since I was little. I'mean 31 & married and I wake my husband up ridiculously early on Xmas day 😅 I always put our decs up the 1st weekend of December & every weekend leading up to xmas we do something christmassy, yday me and my husband made chocolate cakes with snowflake sprinkles. I'm pregnant with our first child so next year I will be even more exciteable than I am now 😅. If you want to be miserable then crack on but leave everyone else to enjoy their life however they like!

Suebreo · 03/12/2018 17:42

Love Christmas but it’s definitely to early, not for shops etc they can have their 6 weeks run up, it’s business after all. But definitely leave it at the back door until it’s the second weekend in December. 👍

Dillydallyer · 03/12/2018 17:44

My tree has been up since bonfire weekend. All my shopping is done and wrapped. I give ZERO shits what people think of me. We have Christmas themed plans most days in December, we do (shock horror!!!) the Elf AND Christmas Eve boxes. And do you know what? My kids love it and we love it. Our lives are full. We just love to celebrate Christmas. We don’t judge people who choose to celebrate Christmas for a day, or even not at all. It’s none of our business when people put up their tree. And my life is too full to even care! Now I’m off to drink a snowball by my twinkly tree lights and watch Elf. Merry Christmas 🎄

helloworld2012 · 03/12/2018 17:44

But I am enjoying my life right now and that includes doing loads of fun christmassy things with my kids, my friends and my family! I'm not just sitting, looking at my tree, waiting for christmas, I'm out living life, and making the most of the fun events and things to see and do that are on offer at this time of year!

(On another note, my health is not good and next Christmas I may be in hospital or worse. Some of the people who have their trees up already could be like me, trying to live life and all it has to offer to the fullest because the future is uncertain)

jwalkden · 03/12/2018 17:44

Its up to each of us when we start to celebrate Christmas - and in whatever way we choose to do so. We haven't got our tree and decs up yet, but others have. Who are you to judge anyway??

He1pme · 03/12/2018 17:45

Oh, you would so hate to live in my street; my tree is up, my christmas tree in garden is flashing away looking stunning. I'm not sad nor lonely I work from 6am til 11.30pm my life is hectic, I enjoy this season .I work all year everyday including christmas day; I like to enjoy my friends and family when I have time... So if I had to leave it until 2 weeks before I would not see family and friends. So this is why some of us start early... medical, care and hospitals have to be around so let us enjoy some of christmas without judgement. Just don't look... happy humbug christmas hope you do have some fun...

Storminateacup1 · 03/12/2018 17:46

@dragonara53 You seem to be in need of one of these!

To answer the original question YABU and a bit insulting. My DS’s face when the tree light came on last night was worth putting it up earlier than planned.

SidmouthDad · 03/12/2018 17:46

I agree with you 100% and despair of the modern 'Christmas' but it seems we are in a minority. Our decs don't go up until Christmas Eve and they stay up until Twelfth Night, whereas many take theirs down on Boxing Day as if in embarrassment. We are definitely old fashioned but our children (23 and 26) wouldn't have it any other way. We've occasionally suggested starting earlier but they've objected quite vociferously, arguing in favour of tradition. Unfortunately, Christmas has succumbed to the same inflation as fireworks. And don't get me started on Halloween...

hdh747 · 03/12/2018 17:48

Yes YABU. Each to their own.

Vampiratequeen · 03/12/2018 17:49

Not RTFT but my tree is up, I put it up at the beginning of December, mine is fake though. It is the season to be jolly, not the 2 weeks to be jolly. If you don't want to put your tree up earlier that is up to you, but don't judge people that put their trees/decorations up in line with advent.

AccioUsername · 03/12/2018 17:49

I love Christmas, it's my absolute favourite time of year and it brings me SO much joy. Not because my life is empty, but because I just love Christmas.
I think if you are worried enough about other people to post on mumsnet, you probably need to look at how full your life is ...

cricketmum84 · 03/12/2018 17:55

I think your life must be pretty empty if you take offence at people getting some joy out of the Christmas season.

And yes my tree is up.

Leapfrog44 · 03/12/2018 17:55

I haven't got a tree as I don't want it to die but I have put up the gorgeous star lanterns in the windows and a wreath. I'm not otherwise 'celebrating Christmas' I just love these particular decorations and will put them up when I damn well please thank you.

Mollypolly123 · 03/12/2018 18:01

Enjoy your Christmass, but please don't associate it with anything at all to do with Jesus !,

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/12/2018 18:03

Went to the Kew Christmas lights show last night - it was amazing - and full of people of all ages having a jolly time! We decided to go and watch this extraordinary display of computer-animated water, light, music and imagination because our lives are so empty.

SoyDora · 03/12/2018 18:04

Enjoy your Christmass, but please don't associate it with anything at all to do with Jesus !

Err... I don’t!

Carriecakes80 · 03/12/2018 18:05

I spent most of my life since the age of 12 caring for my Mum, she didn't really do celebrating, so, when I got a place of my own, and met my husband, to cheer me up after a bad work day, we started to put the decorations up on the 1st of November, and since then, we've done it every year. My children love it, I love it, it hurts nobody, and it makes me happy - but my life is far from empty. I do volunteer work, I have my four children and I am luckily (apparently!) very happily married!
I think its sad that your life must be so quiet that this is the kind of thing you think about!
Anyway, I have to dash as the kids have a Christmas disco tomorrow and I have a million and one things to be doing ;-) x lol.
Merry Christmas...... everyone!

JustJayne1959 · 03/12/2018 18:07

I think you should concentrate on your own business rather than creating a fuss about others. Our tree went up 1st December when the advent calendars went up and it’s stayed that way. I’m not living an empty life, my life is fulfilled in every way possible. If you don’t enjoy Christmas, don’t judge others who do... I’ve been watching Christmas films for a month now 😂🤣😂

JustJayne1959 · 03/12/2018 18:08

Eh? It’s meant to be when he was born? Not that I’m a religious person in any way, but surely to those who are it’s what they celebrate? 🙄

StarB3 · 03/12/2018 18:15

After a rough few years of not enjoying Christmas properly I fully intend to enjoy this one and have our tree up already. Each to their own. Not everyone is as keen but let the ones who are just get on with it. A little Christmas spirit never hurt anyone

purityjonesrockedmyworld · 03/12/2018 18:16

I don’t mind when they put them up but it’s the folk who take them done before 6th January that annoy me, do they even know what they’re celebrating?

Hereiam1980 · 03/12/2018 18:16

It’s only 2 weeks away not 2 months! I find it hard to believe you wouldn’t get a lot of grief for this.

Yes it’s you, leave others alone!

Mollypolly123 · 03/12/2018 18:17

So many think that, Jesus was born in December, if people looked into it they would see it has nothing at all to do with this time of year and that God would not want anything to do with this festival,

hoopyloop2016 · 03/12/2018 18:18

Not always. I had a miscarriage a few years ago in november. The tree ect went up on the 30th November i was depressed and i thought it was unfair on my children to see me so sad so we put up all the decorations. It lifted a bit of life into our lives again. Till that year the tree was up 12 days before Christmas and down boxing day. That year the tree wasn't down till after new year.

BatsAreCool · 03/12/2018 18:18

I don’t mind when they put them up but it’s the folk who take them done before 6th January that annoy me, do they even know what they’re celebrating?

I am not religious so Christmas to me is just a holiday season so the time I choose to start and finish it is entirely to do with how I feel.
