Where have you used deep heat?

So really random, don’t want to make this long, I’ve really complex health issues (mainly primary sclerosing cholingitis - liver disease & gallstones in bile duct) but tonight have a lot of pain in my stomach & nausea.
Have a lot of pain relief and oromorph hasn’t helped. It’s chronic but a flare of symptoms so not going to see a dr.

Anyway - I’ve put deep heat on my upper stomach, and the burning is distracting from the pain - enough for me to type this. Silly question but is this bad?

Has anyone else use deep heat elsewhere from back/knees etc?

I don't know about deep heat but I have a great plug in heat pad from Argos that helps with that sort of pain. It is thin and padded so you can lie on it or wrap it around your stomach. It was £29.

Hope the pain eases soon!

Use a hot water bottle

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 01/12/2018 22:26

Ah thank you marmite I will try that! Also another marmite lover ;)

Deep heat irritates my skin. I use the cool patch version of deep heat, deep freeze. They're fab

SpoonBlender · 01/12/2018 23:10

Deep Heat is entirely safe on normal skin areas, it doesn't get absorbed through the skin it just does the strange nerve stimulation thing.

Just don't get it on your mucus membranes - in fact keep it right out of all your various orifices! It still won't do any actual damage, but it'll feel like it is.

Good luck coping - hope you get some sleep (and you should definitely try a hot water bottle!) xx

Gallstones in bile duct?

Excuse me but what's the colour of your poo? If it's white then get thee to A+E. Asap! It's dangerous. Death dangerous Sad

You have my sympathy. I passed out many times with the pain of gallstones. Unbelievable pain. What does your doc say about all this, all your health issues?

Sorry, deep heat. Erm they smear it over themselves in Withnail + I because they're so cold staying in a stone cottage. But that's not me, granted.

I’m a devotee of heat albeit for back pain but frankly it is as effective as opiates. Sadly it is only really effective when I’m lying down so I still need the opiates but the John Lewis Dreamland heat pads are my saviour.

MatildaTheCat · 01/12/2018 23:21

Really hot heat clearly disrupts nerve pathways in a good way - my back isn’t pretty as a result of the markings but I don’t care.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 01/12/2018 23:21

It’s green springy

Awaiting tests for compatibility for liver transplant as that’s the only treatment - still in limbo with it all tbh.

Have various meds for home to try avoid hospital but not really working - luckily nausea hasn’t turned into vomiting so I’ll be fine as keeping fluids down.

Deep heat great distraction, I’ll try the cool patches too as I’ve some migraine ones.
Horrible pain !

Thanks for suggestions x

Poor you OP. I feel your pain. Heat pads are good and helped me with bad backs many a time.

My hospital thought my liver failure was caused by PSC because I also have UC. I did have a liver transplant in 2016 but for another cause.

Hope you feel better soon x

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 01/12/2018 23:48

Thank you AE, oh gosh how scary, I’m newly diagnosed PSC & UC but quite advanced PSC.
How’s life been post transplant? X

AE1234 · 02/12/2018 00:33

I've had UC for 20+ years now.

I'm really good thank you, I'm not going to lie it was hard to begin with after transplant but I'm so very lucky to be alive and so grateful to my donor.

There is lots of Facebook support groups that have been invaluable over the last few years. What hospital are you attached too?

PookieDo · 02/12/2018 00:35

Any pain I have had, was made easier with a TENs machine. I had a ruptured spinal disc and severe sciatica/muscle damage and that helped keep me sane until it was fixed!
