AIBU to not be able to make head nor tail of this letter re Council Tax

Situation is: I'm unemployed since 22nd October.

I applied for Universal Credit. They told me I need to apply separately for Council Tax Support, which I duly did.

About a week ago, I got a letter stating I've been awarded council tax support.

Today I get THE most confusing letter ever.

The gist of it as follows:

  1. You no longer qualify from 29 October to 1 April 2019. The reason is natural migration to Universal Credit.
  2. Then it goes on about Universal Credit and some jumbled figures
  3. You will need to pay a minimum of 24% of the charge (£4.34 a week)
  4. Then there's a council tax bill which says I've to pay the following amounts:
28.12.2018 £110 28.01.2019 £111 28.02.2019 £111

Can anyone tell me what this is about?

My monthly direct debit was 83 quid odd when I was working.
How the hell are they working this out?

Ok, I've cancelled the direct debit through my bank, and will call them first thing Monday. God, I really don't need this when the reason I'm unable to work is stress and depression!

Flowers

It is stressful but it will get sorted. Easier said than done but try not to worry.

If you do end up with a bill that's more than you can afford, please do seek advice from Citizens Advice or another money advice charity.

Ok, don't even know where nearest Citizen's Advice Bureau is and I'm not the best at actually leaving the house at the moment!

They have webchat and phone advice too. I'll share some links later. No rush though as they won't be open until Monday anyway.

Don't forget council tax is paid over 10 months, they are working out amounts due based in it being cleared year ending March 2019 by December 2018.
Anyone can request their payments over 12 months which would help reduce the payments.

AiryFairyUnicornRainbow · 02/12/2018 11:30

I have a family member who claims similiar amount in benefit

They have to pay the £4 odd a week sum

Zulor · 02/12/2018 11:32

Ye, before I was working, it was like £22 a month or so. Don't know what they're at. I'll ring them in the morning.

Link as promised. Phone, webchat and search for your local office by postcode.

Hope you can get it sorted tomorrow.

I had a friend call me last week. He’s in the same state as you, he has NO idea what the fuck they’re on about. He rang me to have a massive rant and he just expects me to be able to sort it out amidst his rant, whilst telling me I’m wrong about certain things (I’m not) every time I asked him something he was getting more shouty and making less sense. He had a brain injury a few years ago and now has a terribly short fuse. I don’t get offended by his shouting, I just switch off from it now. I’ve told him to come around this week, bring ALL of his paperwork and I’ll sort it while he drains my whiskey bottle (vile stuff, I only buy it for him).

It does all seem like a massive mess for everyone and not everyone has someone who can sort it out. I really really feel for people who don’t have any support.

...I was going to say, even mire so for those who don’t have English as their first language, but actually, I’m not sure it makes that much difference because what’s being written makes no bloody sense.

I hope you can get yours sorted 🥃

CAB here is as much use as a chocolate tea pot. I hope yours is better or you can find a friend to help.
