To want to start losing weight now, not after Christmas?

So many people have said I ‘can't’ Start now it’s bexome a bit irritating - or Aibu? To me the first of a month, any month, is a good day to start.

There's no reason you can't start now. I think it can be harder in December, depending on how disciplined you can be and how many parties etc you have.

DerRosenkavelier · 01/12/2018 12:19

I think that it’s quite a good idea to ‘prep’ in December. By that I mean, just eat as sensibly as you can for the first couple of weeks, and then try to be mindful in all the days of massive excess.

You may not lose weight, but you can put the breaks on piling on the pounds. That way, in Jan when it’s crunch time, and cold and dark, it may be a little easier.

I’m not starting to lose weight as such, but I’m certainly not starting any excessive indulgence until just before Christmas (20th onwards maybe...), maintaining my regular meals and workouts until then. Even then, nobody eats/drinks to excess for days on end, so I can’t see why a ‘diet’ can’t be started even just before Christmas. Just aim to have a healthier lifestyle over Christmas than you did last year.

Delatron · 01/12/2018 12:23

I’m basically upping the exercise! Lots of calorie burning stuff and trying to be good in the lead up then relax over Christmas.

Delatron · 01/12/2018 12:25

It’s only the 1st December too so sounds like an excuse.
I don’t agree with diets but you can eat perfectly healthily throughout December.

Junkmail · 01/12/2018 12:30

I started in the summer but I’m not going to stop just because it’s now December. If you want to start now then start now. There’s a little more temptation at this time of the year but it’s not insurmountable. Just have one mince pie, not four Grin Don’t listen to other people—sometimes they say things like this just to justify their own festive over eating.

SaucyJack · 01/12/2018 12:38

Of course you can.

Christmas is only a few days of overindulgence out of the month for those of us who aren’t living some Cosmo-reader party lifestyle.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 01/12/2018 12:59

I’ve started now. I’m busting out of clothes now, it’s only likely to get worse after Xmas.

It’s just a stalling and justification tactic. People do it all the time - I do it too.

Very sensible advice- which I intend to follow!

Thehop · 01/12/2018 13:10

Do it now! I joined weight watchers at the beginning of October and everyone said it was daft and I should get Christmas out of the way first.

I’ve lost 21lbs so far and not planning on using Christmas for an excuse to gain at all!

You go for it!

Lucked · 01/12/2018 13:12

The trick is to never discuss it with people, it is very common for people to buy up barriers to other people’s weight loss no matter what the time of year. Sometimes from good intentions ( your doing it wrong only MY way will work) but often because they don’t want to think about their own behaviour. Just get on with it.

DannyWallace · 01/12/2018 13:13

I started weight watchers a few years ago on 1st Dec. It worked great. I stuck to it 100% throughout December (it just made me more aware of what I was having on nights out-I would stick with healthy options and have a few drinks 😀). However, I missed a weigh in over Christmas, and stopped counting anything from 5pm Christmas Eve until I woke up on Boxing Day.
It worked great and by March I was at my goal weight.

KonaMum · 01/12/2018 13:16

I hate this idea that you have to binge all through December! I plan to have lost a kilo or two by January. As long as you exercise plenty and don’t go mad it’s perfectly doable. Obviously you might have a bit of a blow out Christmas Day an Boxing Day but go for a few big walks, eat sensibly the rest of the time and it shouldn’t suddenly cancel out the rest of your efforts.

BishopstonFaffing · 01/12/2018 13:25

The thing is, if you have December off for Christmas, a day off for every wedding, birthday, christening, leaving do and two weeks every time you go in holiday you'll never lose weight. So I say go for it! or you'll end up like me

feelingverylazytoday · 01/12/2018 13:51

Of course you can. I've been losing weight for over 2 years now, I'm certainly not going to stop in December. That's a whole month, one twelth of a year (well just over 3 weeks to Christmas), you could get off to a nice start and give yourself a nice morale boost during that time.
I've got to the stage now where I don't want to eat to excess anyway, I will have a few treats over Christmas but only in normal size portions.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/12/2018 13:53

Just get cracking. If you put it off to the new year you might find yourself gorging like food is going out of fashion and have an extra stone or two come the new year that you otherwise wouldn't have had to start with.

Holidayshopping · 01/12/2018 13:55

You can do anything you want to. If you want to eat less from now, do it!

Or are you moaning about what other people are doing?

littlebillie · 01/12/2018 14:01

Drink less, move more and say no to the relentless nibbles

Prisonbreak · 01/12/2018 14:13

I started in July. Lost 37 lbs so far. Certainly not stopping as it’s December. Any month is the right month to start if you are committed and dedicated
