I have my first 2 hour driving lesson in a dew hours and the confirmation email says I need to generate a code to give to my instructor.

All is well and good, but I've just realised something - My driving licence is in my maiden name!

Can I use it anyway? Or will my instructor cancel today if I tell him and make me tell the DVLA/Send off my marriage certificate etc?

Thank you

It is perfectly legal to hold a drivers licence in either your married or maiden surname.

I think I was cross posting at one point, QuickBug There were a few points raised when I first posted and I wasn't as clear as I could have been!

I was trying to point out that incorrect information is fineable if you are stopped (or are not at the address on the license when you get another infraction) but that the DVLA won't levy a fine if you simply update the information, no matter how long after the fact you do it!

So, given OP was initially asking about her name, it was safe to correct it whenever, it wouldn't prevent her from using that license with an instructor but it could cause issues if she wanted to rent a car, 2 forms of ID are usually required and if they are in different names she would not be successful.

Almost the same with the address, as long as you do update the information prior to being caught out the DVLA won't levy a fine!

But I mangled it, which I acknowledge. But at least the links I put up were more clear than I was! Smile

I have a Samphire bubble bath and every time I use it I think of you, @CuriousaboutSamphire

I still have a paper license (haven't moved) and it's fine that it has my married name on it whereas I use my maiden name for most things now post divorce. My passport is still in my married name, my credit cards are in my maiden name.

It's a right jumble and a pain tbh but nothing illegal.

I only updated my license four years after getting married and a year after we moved house. Cost me £20 but no fine.

Why do people insist they know things they really don't? My licence is in my maiden name and I married 12 years ago and am now divorced. I cba to change it. Everything else I have is in my married name, except my passport, which is also in my maiden name.

Over the years I have hired several vehicles from several companies, always been insured (obviously) and I pay for that in my married name, had to generate a few of those dvla codes, bought a new car, and received a speeding fine and then attended a speed awareness course. For hiring and the speed awareness course I had/have to remember to take both my birth and marriage certs along with me, and there has never ever been a problem. I have updated my licence with a more recent photo and my new address, but the surname I choose to use is not a legal matter.

It would be easier in terms of ID if I updated it though. I always have to remember to book holidays in my maiden name because of the passport thing!
