Yes it's a Daily Mail link, so what.

Totally tongue in cheek article about how Christmas decorations are a class thing. Very funny. Highlights include:

"Covering your PVC door in some enormous, shiny taffeta bow is not going to make the door look any better. "

"The rule is: the further away from green it is, the more common it is. Thus: pink and white trees - the pits."

"should your husband (and it is always men) return home with an electronic dancing Douglas Fir, or a fake mounted reindeer head that bleats Good King Wenceslas to passers-by, then you have two options: get rid of it, or get rid of him."

"If a house’s baubles have gone up in November then however much repenting you may do during Lent, it will never be enough. "

So, so true.

Yes it's a tongue-in-cheek snobby article, but in terms of how I like my Christmas decorations, I agree with every single word of it. I am slightly torn over the plain vs multi-colored tree lights, because I had coloured ones as a child, but apart from that, spot on! Doesn't mean I would openly sneer at how other people like theirs though.

Stressedoverkids · 01/12/2018 16:16

I really think it's such a shame when so many people are dependent on Universal Credit and food banks that the small happiness they might have had in Christmas is robbed by someone who gets paid to look down his nose at others.

Enjoy Christmas and don't give a hoot whether you have coloured lights or not.

Totally ridiculous article - BOYCOTT THE DAILY MAIL!!

Monkeynuts18 · 01/12/2018 16:42

I like William Hanson - his humour is all self-mockery, although I suppose the irony is likely to be lost on DM readers.

In terms of personal taste I agree with everything he says. I much prefer wreaths to bows, real trees to fake, white lights to coloured etc. But we’re all different.

DaphneDiligaf · 01/12/2018 16:46

I think some people believe Hyacinth Bouquet is actually a role model. I wonder what her newspaper of choice would be?

onthenaughtystepagain · 01/12/2018 16:49

I love reading his pieces for the comments, steam seething out of earholes, utter indignation, great fun!
Personally I think he's spot on with this one, our tree goes up about a week before Christmas, never has a coloured light, I'm even picky about the shade of white, any outdoor lights are minimal, absolutely no electronic nodding sheep, reindeer etc..

HopeGarden · 01/12/2018 16:54

I prefer understated decorations personally.

But as long as my neighbours don’t start blinding me with an excess of outside festive lighting, I don’t really care a bit how anyone else chooses to decorate their house.

It’s certainly never occurred to me that Christmas decorations were a class issue.

ToastedSandwichObsession · 01/12/2018 17:27

I love William Hanson's humour. His blurb is the only thing I read on the DM.

My neighbours behind me, they've only just moved in, were hauling ghastly, giant inflatables in front of their house this morning, other neighbours have put up their migraine inducing, emergency services lights late yesterday afternoon. It's all just too dreadful.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off in to the cupboard of doom to find my fake, cocaine snow covered tree and some satanic tinsel to start making my usually tastefully decorated house resemble a cross between a tarts boudoir and something off an American Christmas movie set Grin

PeroniZucchini · 01/12/2018 17:40

I don’t like the idea of sneering at others’ taste but I must say I agree with his opinion on what looks ‘better’ purely because it’s the way I’ve always decorated, and my parents too - although I do remember some dodgy purple tinsel made an appearance for a couple of years in the 1980s Grin.

PeroniZucchini · 01/12/2018 17:42

My mum used to hang strings of pearls (not real!) on her trees... I wonder what Mr Hanson would make of them 🤔

TooManyPaws · 01/12/2018 17:51

I thought that the Queen had already got her tree up? Does that mean that she is unutterably common?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/12/2018 18:40

What’s wrong with tinsel? I thought it was a staple of Christmas trees.

Sooperkat · 01/12/2018 18:49

We always have a real tree from the first weekend in December and it lasts perfectly well until the new year. I love that everyone’s decorations are different, what would be the fun in driving around to see them with the children if they all looked like ours?

simiisme · 02/12/2018 17:30

Well said Shednik Wishing you and your family a much better 2019 xx

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 02/12/2018 17:31

I like green trees. Not a fan of other colours. But - I don’t judge people on their decorations

dudsville · 02/12/2018 17:36

So much time and effort spent trying to appear as if you're not who you are. And I don't mean that in a fixed sense. If you want "tasteful", "wag", "fun", wtfc? Too much time spent shaming other people's choices. Don't live in fear of other people's criticism.

LordPickle · 02/12/2018 17:39

I think people that are obsessed with class usually have none.

Obi73 · 02/12/2018 17:45

What’s it got to do with anyone else? I’ll put whatever decorations up I like, when I like. Just because some oik in the Daily Mail says it’s common isn’t going to put me off. As a final note, isn’t Christmas about goodwill and festive cheer to everyone?

Curious2468 · 02/12/2018 17:48

Dread to think what they would make of my tree 😂

to think there's a grain of truth in this article about Christmas decs
howrudeforme · 02/12/2018 17:50

I live in an area that considers itself v well to do.

In my street there are multiple Santa/reindeer lit up things in front gardens and lights all over the roofs. And there aren’t that many young kids in my road.

I have a small 2ft fake tree with inbuilt lights and that’s as much as I can cope with. I’m crap at making a tree look nice.

impossiblecat · 02/12/2018 17:52

Bollox.

Christmas is supposed to be tacky

JudasPrudy · 02/12/2018 17:52

Christmas is not the time for being cool or trendy. It's the time for being tacky, vulgar and unrepentant Grin

lovetherisingsun · 02/12/2018 17:58

@Curious2468 Shock

Possibly the most awesome tree I have ever seen. Is it glittery too? Please tell me it's glittery too!

olbndansmummy · 02/12/2018 17:59

Our trees always go up November a white one and a green one the kids decorate both (we’re not allowed to touch them!) and have a ball. In fact I might just get a pink one and a black one! Jezzifish your tree looks fab. Merry Christmas everyone!

Curious2468 · 02/12/2018 18:00

Lol not glittery I’m afraid but I am slowly filling it with the loudest (often sparkly) decorations I can find! It’s my little bit of happy and I really don’t care one bit if people think it’s tacky or common. Christmas should be fun!

Wholovesorangesoda · 02/12/2018 18:02

I totally agree that everything on his list is the more tasteful version. When it comes to Christmas, however, tasteful is not our keyword! Multicoloured lights, yes. Inflatable snowman outside, yes. Fake tree, yes. Baubles and Christmas decorations of every conceivable colour, yes. I love our Christmas decs, we have ones my dd made, ones I made as a child, my favourites from my parents tree have been passed to me to put on my tree. It's the tackiest thing in the world and I love it
