Crying over spilt milk... Well, crumbled cake

It's my daughter's first birthday this weekend and I've been making her birthday cake. All was going well until I started icing it and the cake is crumbling away as I crumb coat it. DH thinks I'm being completely unreasonable to cry but I'm just so overwhelmed right now with things at home and I think I just pictured her first birthday a certain way and I feel as if thats all fallen apart too. AIBU or is DH being unreasonable saying I'm being stupid and it's just a cake for a baby who doesn't care.

Cake too warm? Pop it in the freezer for a bit?

JudasPrudy · 30/11/2018 23:12

You're not stupid but you are putting yourself under too much pressure. Just leave the cake for tonight and if you can't salvage it tomorrow just buy one. It really doesn't matter - the only thing that matters to your baby is having her mum there on her birthday Thanks

If it can not be iced could you crumble it up more and make it into a trifle type dessert , ie cake fruit- custard / cream and a candle

poptartprincess · 30/11/2018 23:19

I thought I'd waited long enough, it seemed completely cooled. I'll leave it for tonight and go and have a cup of tea. I do like that idea though Angie! I'll definitely use that if I can't save it. Thank you

If you really want to save that sponge but it's too fragile to do the crumb coating, buy a tub of ready made icing and stick it in the microwave in short bursts till it's runny. Pour over cake and let set.

It is really frustrating. If it isn’t salvageable you could crumble it all up, mix with frosting form into balls, stick in a skewer and dip in melted chocolate to make cake pops?

wishywashy6 · 30/11/2018 23:30

I know nothing about cake but I do know that your daughter won't have a clue what happened on her first birthday so relax, don't put too much pressure on yourself.

'And if it is really important'

After you’ve covered in icing one way or another, cover it in smarties and sprinkles. Or crumbled flake, or kit kats around the outside. Smarties have rescued a cake or two for me!

I haven't seen that film but now I want to as that actually made me laugh out loud!

definitely try putting it in the freezer to harden up a bit and then try again (making sure your icing is as soft as possible)

RB68 · 01/12/2018 18:24

Yup freezer trick works. Freeze, ice and and do final layer then let it defrost covered ready for event, I have let cool in tin before and then turned out seems to keep the crumb crust in place better
