Can't believe colleague is doing this

I work in a spa.

5 colleagues including manager in front of house.

Recently a colleague has got a new boyfriend and is always finding work shifts hard as she wants to spend as much time as possible with him.

We all have family lives too but we still don't moan about shift patterns.

Recently she has taken 2 weeks off for her anxiety. I understand that it must be horrible so we are all happily trying to cover her shifts.

She knows 2 of us are going on maternity leave in a few weeks. ( myself included )

She messaged me to say she might want to take more leave but was feeling too crap to call in to tell our manager?

Gave manager heads up to call her yesterday so that we knew a definite answer so that we know for advance how to cover the rota.

She now has decided to resign within 6 weeks notice - thank god she's not leaving right now before busy Xmas. Which means we can spread out shifts over Xmas a lot easier.

However received an email from her saying she will suddenly bail out last minute and is deffo not working up until her notice but is fed up with establishment so doesn't care less!!!!

So stressful for everyone including myself and colleague who are supposed to be goin on leave very soon. She could leave at any given minute but isn't telling anyone when.

Tired and irritated😪

Don't cover the slack unless you really want to. People will tend to take the path of least resistance and if you all start covering for her the manager may not taking getting a replacement seriously.

My view is that if your business can't cope with someone suddenly deciding to leave then you've failed as a manager and your business continuity is not fit for purpose. People get sick, people die suddenly or just have to be somewhere else and you need to build resilience into your business plan (or insure against it for critical staff).

In this scenario your manager should be getting out the material they've pre-planned, contacting agencies and getting cover in while they hire a new permie staff member.

This might seem a bit heartless but I get fed up with firms with no disaster recovery and business continuity planning who then expect everyone else to cover for their failings. The purpose of management is to provide the necessary environment and resources to allow people to do their job.

This isn't just for big firms. When I was working for a 15 person company we had plans for the office being unavailable, staff being long term sick, mass theft of office equipment etc.
