TTC and the Christmas party

Hi all, so my DH and I have just started TTC (when I say "just" I mean literally yesterday!) I have only just had the mirena taken out and not had a period yet, and I don't want to do ovulation tests immediately as we just want to see how it goes for a bit.

My question is this - should I be refraining from alcohol as if I'm pregnant immediately? This seems extreme given it could be months/longer before we get pregnant (assuming that we can). How do people generally deal with this?

God no. It took me 18 months first time round so I quickly gave up on not drinking. Maybe don't get shit faced though! Have fun

I would be not drinking between your fertile days until you have a period (of course hoping that you don't!). You can then drink again once you get your period until the fertile window opens again. But if you want to be completely safe, you would probably need to cut it out completely

I started TTC at exactly the same time as you. I went with the policy 'drink til its pink'.

Good luck!

Came on to say the Christmas party isn't a good venue for dtd!!

You'll get loads of different responses here because we will all have had different experiences.
It took us 8 months to get pregnant and I am approaching week 36 now. I carried on drinking until I found out, around three weeks in. Others will say to abstain.
It's up to you, but good luck whatever you decide!

Just enjoy yourself. With my first, I got arse holed New Years Eve not realising I was pregnant. She's now a beautiful, gifted teenager!

I decided that I would only drink while I had my period. It ended up being several years that I had to follow that pattern, but it worked for me.

Being the designated driver is a great cover for not drinking. If that doesn’t work, you can always use the medication excuse.

Birdsgottafly · 30/11/2018 17:14

Alcohol doesn't do damage in the first month of pregnancy. If it's normal drinking, one off, level.

kenandbarbie · 30/11/2018 17:46

Think of the millions of babies conceived with tipsy parents. I actually think it would help you to relax and not be too stressy about ttc.

Live life until you get a positive. I'm 3 years TTC, you just don't know how long it'll take so enjoy life

SoyDora · 30/11/2018 18:14

I lived life as normal until my positive test.

Cornettoninja · 30/11/2018 18:35

Carry on as usual I’d say. Normal alcohol consumption should only be reviewed if you’re having problems (it won’t be helpful for either of you).

Raffles1981 · 30/11/2018 19:10

I found doing things like giving up drinking and eating certain foods just put pressure on me. Drink til it's pink is a good saying! If go with that. As someone else said, just don't get shit faced. And good luck! X

Personally I chose not to drink while TTC but it's not for everyone. I was never a big drinker so it was no great hardship for me.

I did have one occasion whole TTC where I went for a few cocktails (teacher, end of term drinks). I even took a pregnancy test beforehand just in case, which was negative, so I drank more than I usually would. One week later, positive test Blush

Namelesswonder · 30/11/2018 19:24

Live your life as normal, don’t get stressed, don’t get obsessed about it and don’t forget it’s quite normal for it to take many months. Drinking in the first few weeks of pregnancy won’t harm the baby at all.

Random18 · 30/11/2018 19:27

I tried to be good in the 2 week wait and refrain from drinking.
I did it month after month after month, thankfully got fed up with that before it became year after year.
When I did finally conceive I had quite a few drinks before knowing I was pregnant (conceived around Xmas).
I remember mentioning it to GP who reminded me that quite a lot of people got pregnant because they had a lot to drink than me at New Year

The only thing I would advise is to start taking Folic Acid if you’re not already.

No blood is passing between you and the embryo straightaway so it's fine to drink. It took us 20 months to get the first bfp (mc) then with the second I was drinking white wine the evening before I tested positive. Baby is currently 36 weeks and looking good!

Don't put your life on hold for ttc and don't worry too much until you know you're pregnant. Obviously be as healthy as you can but be happy too!
