to be panicking over my temp?

Lieika · 30/11/2018 13:20

I have a temperature of 40.1. I feel horrific. I also have a 6 week old baby. DH not picking up his sodding phone. Doctors surgery phone engaged (8th in the queue).

Any advice on whether this is a&e worthy or not?

Don't want to turn up and look like a fool...

Really? Gosh, my family always seem to get a temp of around 40 with a cold. Nobody medical has ever seemed remotely bothered unless it doesn’t come down with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

jerrysbellyhangslikejelly · 30/11/2018 13:57

Please seek medical advise OP. That’s a high temperature that didn’t normalise with paracetamol and given that you gave birth 6 weeks ago and are breastfeeding this warrants a medical opinion. I wouldn’t panic but you do need to be checked. If it does turn out to be something benign like a virus all well and good but please get checked to rule out a more serious infection.

jerrysbellyhangslikejelly · 30/11/2018 13:58

@MakeLemonade hers didn’t come down with paracetamol

gettofuckthrees · 30/11/2018 13:59

Hello hello hello. High temp feeling terrible and feeling freezing cold, get the on 111 right now. Don't panic. These are indicators of sepsis, they will probably send for an ambulance. Don't down play this. If you feel dreadful your body is telling you something.

I downplayed it when I felt like this six week following a miscarriage and ended up blue lighted in a crucial condition.

Seek help immediately

Bluerussian · 30/11/2018 14:00

You've probably got a cold. The high temperature is indicative of infection, hopefully it's nothing more serious (like 'flu). It's horrible being unwell when you have a baby but take things low, only do what you have to, sponge yourself with cool water, drink plenty of water and take some more paracetamol.

When you get hold of your husband ask him to bring in some Nightnurse or similar.

If symptoms don't improve, doctor's for you.

Hopefully OP has managed to get through to the GP surgery by now but if not, a temperature of 40 degrees definitely needs checking out by a medical professional, sooner rather than later.

cheesywotnots · 30/11/2018 14:04

Hope OP feels better soon and manages to get some medical help. Some of the 'advice' here has been really poor and unsafe.

Houseonahill · 30/11/2018 14:10

Advice on this thread has shocked me. Banging headache and a temperature of 40 that doesn't come down to normal with paracetamol and 6 weeks PP definitely needs checking out.

Why would you ever tell someone who is clealy ill and worried not to seek medical advice? What if it is something serious and you've all just stopped someone seeking medical advice in time?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/11/2018 14:11

The advice on here is ridiculous.

op call 111 and explain your symptoms and make sure you ask if it could be sepsis.

MakeLemonade · 30/11/2018 14:13

I’m sorry - I must have had bad advice! Obviously didn’t realise as wouldn’t have passed it on.

All four of us had very similar last week and my GP was happy that temp was coming down - not expecting it to get back to normal, just said it was the body responding to the virus and nothing to worry about. My DD (3) had the same thing (and was why we were there) and he basically just said it was a bad cold!

Lieika · 30/11/2018 14:16

@MakeLemonade also the fact that 4 of you had the same thing probably indicates a viral infection? Highly unlikely you all had something serious (forgive me if GP was unaware of you also being sick!)

@MakeLemonade glad you're all ok though! :)

CottonSock · 30/11/2018 14:19

You need help with the baby at the very least! Is there anyone else you can call?

DrunkenUnicorn · 30/11/2018 14:21

I had a temp of 41c that dropped with paracetamol but went back up soon after.

Felt the illest I’ve ever felt. Freezing cold, shaking, headache so awful I couldn’t think straight.

I had sepsis.

Call 111 at least

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 30/11/2018 14:22

Lemonade But that was medical advice given to you, for your specific situation, by a qualified doctor who had examined you. You can’t necessarily apply that same advice to the OP, when her situation could be totally different.

MakeLemonade · 30/11/2018 14:23

We didn’t all have it when I saw GP but I’d been ill and DD too (the others got it a few days later) so probably did help him diagnose.

I hope you’re feeling better soon and that it’s nothing serious @Lieika

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/11/2018 14:25

So much bad advice on here...

Op please ring 111 as you rightly say it could be an infection/sepsis and better to safe than sorry.

This. OP please ring 111. Tell them you had a baby only 6 weeks ago. Ask "Could this be sepsis"

YOU ARE AT INCREASED RISK OF INFECTION/SEPSIS DUE TO BEING RECENTLY POST-PARTUM.

(I'm a HCP. Triage is what I do)

AnotherEmma · 30/11/2018 14:26

Some ignorant and irresponsible "advice" on this thread.

"Personally with a temp of 40 and no other symptoms beyond a fever I wouldn’t panic - my kids both get temps this high"

It's quite common for children to get high temperatures - they're not as good at regulating their temperature as adults are.

In an adult, a temp above 40 warrants medical advice.

QueenCyan · 30/11/2018 14:31

A temp of 40 in an adult is extremely high and worrying. Please call your GP/111.
Are you breastfeeding? Any redness/soreness/lumpiness on your boobs? The first sign of mastitis I had was cold and shivery and the redness and lumps came later. The GP gave me a prescription without seeing me as there s no way I could have got to the surgery as felt so rough. Luckily mil wa here to collect prescription.

AnotherEmma · 30/11/2018 18:08

How are you OP? Did you call 111? Hope everything is OK.

lljkk · 30/11/2018 18:15

Are you taking maximum allowed dose of paracetamol?

AnotherEmma · 01/12/2018 20:02

I've been thinking about you today, OP. Hope you're OK. Please update us if you can.

Roaring · 01/12/2018 20:11

Wow! Shocking advice on here. Op I hope you called 111 and are feeling better.

FaithInfinity · 01/12/2018 20:57

I’m a HCP and I would advise calling 111 ASAP. I’d be very concerned about a patient with those symptoms and be seeking urgent medical attention.
