To return used pants?

So this morning I bought some lovely new underwear from Sainsbury’s. 2 bras and 3 matching pants. I rinsed/ deed one set (exactly as instructions) and then wore them to dinner this evening.

They are the perfect comfortable size - even went one up on the pants!

I’ve just got home from dinner and found that all the pretty stitching on the pants has come totally undone and separated from the elastic 😮

Upon inspection it’s quite clearly shoddy stiching. Which is disappointing as I’ve been buying from there for years!

I’ve tossed them in the washer but DP thinks I should take the (clean) used pair and the (still tagged) unused ones back tomorrow! Probably the bras too as no point keeping them either. AIBU to feel weird returninh used pants?

They sound faulty.

PurpleDaisies · 29/11/2018 22:58

Oops. Pressed post. If they’re faulty you should be entitled to a refund.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 29/11/2018 22:59

I wouldn't take them back (not nice for the shop staff to have to handle worn underwear after all), but I might very well photograph where the stitching has come away and email head office.

Poloshot · 29/11/2018 22:59

Take them back. No different to anything else.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 29/11/2018 23:01

Unworn stuff you could try to return, but don't shops usually have a no-return policy on underwear anyway?

GreenMeerkat · 29/11/2018 23:02

That's only because they can't resell it.

A faulty item cannot be resold anyway so OP would be entitled to a refund, as with anything else.

KnightlyMyMan · 29/11/2018 23:04

Yeah they do but it doesn’t count if the items ‘faulty’ and these have basically disintergrated at the waistband. Im quite a slim size 10 too (not that it should matter) but it’s not like I was wearing these knickers for 2-3 hours...they’re not fit for purpose!

I just feel weird taking my pants into the shop 🤢

That would be store policy, which doesn’t apply here.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 29/11/2018 23:08

I used to work in a lingerie store. People returned knickers all the time. Or at least attempted to.
Frequently they hadn't bothered washing them beforehand either. 🤢

whatsthepointthen · 29/11/2018 23:09

i wouldnt

Vicky1990 · 29/11/2018 23:18

The pants are not fit for purpose due to faulty stitching, you are entitled to return them to the shop and be given a full refund.
Take the faulty washed pants with you as well to return in case the shop asks for them to check what the fault is.

Bluerussian · 29/11/2018 23:32

Take them back if you have kept receipt, wash first of course.
You might find they are the only faulty pair, it does happen, so don't take them all back unless you are sure.

onthenaughtystepagain · 29/11/2018 23:34

If they are poor quality then yes, return them, OH returned some shreddies to Next because after a couple of washes the waistband was parting company from the rest, he's not careless, usually they last him years. I must say I stayed in the car though!

Steamedbadger · 29/11/2018 23:34

Some strange replies here. If goods are faulty then you are entitled to return them. That's it. It doesn't matter that they are pants.

Iloveautumnleaves · 29/11/2018 23:35

You’ve only worn them a few hours & you would be returning them clean, don’t be silly, take them back. You don’t even even need to say you wore them, just that you washed them and they fell apart.

FermatsTheorem · 29/11/2018 23:41

The "no returns" policy presumably applies to people getting them home and deciding they don't like the colour. Exchanges because people don't like stuff or accidentally bought the wrong size is at the discretion of the store.

You've been sold faulty goods which is covered by the sale of goods act. If it's unfit for purpose, they have to give a refund. I recently got a refund on a pair of kid's trainers which had been worn outside (hence wouldn't have been returnable simply because we didn't like them). We'd had them for a month. But because they'd fallen to bits - and there's an assumption that a pair of shoes should last longer than a month - the store were fine about it.

Amanduh · 29/11/2018 23:50

They’re faulty. Why wouldn’t you take them back? The ‘no unworn underwear’ returns rule doesn’t apply for faulty items. Definitely take them back!
