DM is more sympathetic to dog than myself

Basically I went away last week for a weekend and come back to find the family cat, E, hadn't been home since I left. She was a house cat so very unlike her. Although E was the family cat she shared the closest bond with me, she would run down the stairs everytime she heard me step in from work, slept in my room, would follow me about the house, if my door was closed she'd meow until I let her in etc. I really loved her and felt so happy to come home to her every day.
I of course did not take the news well that no one really bothered to go out and look for her and tried to process her disappearance best I could by staying quiet and keeping to myself, that way I wouldn't lash out or dish blame when really I don't know what happened.
My mum was totally unsympathetic, told me to stop being so disrespectful ( keeping myself to myself once I got home from work), called an aunt to tell her of my 'rude behaviour' & constantly went on about me not being the only one who misses her.
However when it comes to the dog (fair enough he was very close with her) it's all aaaw I think he misses E, you can tell by the change in his behaviour. She's letting him in her room and allowing him to lay on her lap. He's normally not allowed & he's a very big dog.

I was forced to snap out of my grieving and just get on with it but the dog gets all the sympathy? I know not everyone understands the bond between owner and pet but it's a real loss. Especially after having my other cat (Es sister) groomed and then practically stolen from us by a neighbour.

I don't want to feel any malice towards DM. Am I taking it too seriously?

First of all, put the cat's litter box outside. They have an amazing sense of smell and this often helps lead them home as they usually don't wander too far. Secondly, I understand why you're so hurt. I would be, too. I'm sorry about your dear kitty.
