To not want to participate in the work christmas do as its too expensive..

I work for a well know food retail company, They have some large stores but mainly convienience stores, Out of the 7 years I have worked in one of the smaller stores we have only had 2 christmas do's.

We are given £10 per employee towards it. it has been that amount since i've been there, over the 7 christmas's I have been there we have had 5 different managers, 2 couldnt be bothered to organise anything and arrange cover for the store so we were given the £10 in store stamps so we had to spend it instore,

The 2 times we have gone out have ended up costing about £60 per person as the managers have chosen where we go and once you have paid for a taxi there and back, then your drinks, meal. it soon adds up when the company is only paying £10 towards it,

We have a new manager now, been with us about 2 months, He has organised a christmas night out at a large pub/restaurant chain, A week before payday and even if it was on payday many of us cant afford it, We have 11 staff at the moment, 15 is about right for the size of our store so all fed up and overworked,

He is making some of us feel bad for saying we might not be going, To be honest I think we deserve more than £10 for the shit we put up with every day especially during the Christmas period with double deliveries, not enough staff and stressed out customers. And You would think that it would have gone up abit in the last 7 years.

Aibu to stick to my guns and not go or am I being a misery guts?

Government here we don't get any money towards our do but we do tend to go lunchtime so allowed a bit of extra time for lunch.

We just pick somewhere affordable for all with a menu choice of courses.

So yanbu to be annoyed that it's costing so much but perhaps volunteer to help organise it. Organising a Christmas do that people then refuse to come to is disheartening and a bitch especially if no one else volunteers suggestions or assistance to organise

DanielRicciardosSmile · 29/11/2018 22:30

To everyone saying how shocked they are that the Christmas do isn't paid for by the company, I've never worked anywhere that didn't ask people to pay. Nor has DH or any friends that I know of.

Childrenofthesun · 29/11/2018 22:33

In the public sector we always pay for our Xmas parties, which are invariably held in a non-fancy hotel chain and consist of paying upwards of £40 for a slice of Bernard Matthews turkey breast and a few soggy sprouts followed by far too many people trying to cram themselves onto a tiny dance floor to boogie to Slade. I rarely bother to go and certainly wouldn't go if I felt anyone was putting pressure on me!

Toddlerteaplease · 29/11/2018 22:34

I'm a nurse, ours is £35 this year but I'm in a 12 hour shift the next day. If I'd known that at the time of booking I'd not have bothered. Apparently I got the short straw as I won't be drunk. I though it was a joke as names are picked out of a hat. Apparently it wasn't. AngryI wouldn't be bothered so much but had to leave the last big work do as I was working the next dayAngryAngry

Isleepinahedgefund · 29/11/2018 22:36

If you don’t want to go because of cost, just say so. I have politely declined both my whole office and team Christmas do because of cost, the organiser of both (same person) wanted to go for expensive options. There was a much smaller uptake of the whole office do this year because of the cost.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/11/2018 22:36

The company I work for contributes £25 per person towards our Christmas do. We go for a meal out in town, and a few drinks afterwards.

Kemer2018 · 29/11/2018 22:36

It's your money and your time so do what you like.
I work for a local authority and we get nothing towards a do. I'm not giving up my money and my time so I'm not going

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/11/2018 22:40

I have never had a paid Christmas do. Ours is £45 a head. I’m not going, although mainly because I don’t enjoy that sort of thing rather than money. The fact we have to pay for ourselves means there’s no expectation or pressure to attend. DP gets £30 per person in his place, and departments choose where they go, and whether lunch or dinner - some people take a flexi half day off if it’s lunch.

Hotfootit · 29/11/2018 22:40

I’m public sector - we pay for our own Christmas meal (our employer contributes nothing).
DH is private sector - the company pays for the Christmas evening out for employees and partners!!!

CheekyRedhead · 29/11/2018 22:40

You get £10 provided. I'd be made up with that! Most places are completely self funded when arranged locally as a team Christmas do. misses point completely, jealous I don't get £10 😮

anniehm · 29/11/2018 22:41

I pay for mine, I also pay for the whole of dh's team as he treats them! He's way too good of a boss!

CheekyRedhead · 29/11/2018 22:41

Oh and I have 3 work self funded dos this year

Youmadorwhat · 29/11/2018 22:42

No not private... as I said I don’t know because I never asked it was the first school I ever worked for (small school 7 staff members). I don’t work there any more so I can’t ask now 🤣🤣 and I only do supply work in Ireland now so no actual Christmas do for me this year to find out how it works here 😂

Mumof3needswine · 29/11/2018 22:43

Is it the coop by By chance? I used to work for them and in our store the £10 was used as your deposit to secure your place for the meal I only worked there over 1 Christmas but the place they picked for the meal was £60 just for the meal ! So probably would of been over £100 including drink and taxi ! I didn't go as I was working anyway so lost out on my "bonus" Hmm

Leyani · 29/11/2018 22:45

Public sector here. Ours is a Christmas lunch during working time - we close early on the day. It's paid for and hence very well attended. We often go for drinks afterwards and everyone pays themselves then.

LoniceraJaponica · 29/11/2018 22:49

We all got advent calendars from our boss today Grin

BunsOfAnarchy · 29/11/2018 22:50

Organise something local from the store which suits everyones budget.
Go for a couple drinks or a meal at a cheap pub or a chain restaurant. Organise something else.

catijane · 29/11/2018 22:51

I have a small business and we used to pay for a staff Christmas "party night" at a local large hotel, 3 course meal and bar with disco/music afterwards. Everyone would say they were coming and then some not turn up for various reasons, we stopped after three years as it was expensive for us, and quite hurtful that our staff were happy to waste our money and effort in making sure that everyone could come.

Ollivander84 · 29/11/2018 22:51

YANBU. Ours are funded, meal paid for and a £50 drinks/taxi allowance

LoniceraJaponica · 29/11/2018 22:52

Wow, that is generous.

onthenaughtystepagain · 29/11/2018 22:53

I am a teacher and I have never had to spend money on a Christmas do!! I’m actually in shock

I've never heard of that in a school, we had a staff fund that covered leaving presents etc and paid for a few bottles of wine and some nibbles in the staffroom at the end of term. Anything else was self funded, it 20 years I went to two because they were in places I fancied eating at.

Willow2017 · 29/11/2018 22:53

Small family run business where I work.
Xmas meal out plus all drinks including bubbly to start with is all paid for by the company.

No way would I pay £60 to go to a works Xmas meal, if they want you to go then they should pick somewhere cheaper or pay for it.

ilovepixie · 29/11/2018 22:53

We have to pay for our Christmas do. The company pays £10 towards the meal. You only get the money for a meal so if you were just going for drinks they wouldn't pay it.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 29/11/2018 22:55

Public sector here. I can just imagine the Daily Fail headlines if my particular department had our Xmas parties funded 😂 We pay for all of our own .

ilovepixie · 29/11/2018 22:55

When I have worked in private sectir the company has always picked up the full bill, including taxis home. Now I own the business I have followed this oractice - however this year I asked staff if they want a night out or the cash equivalent (I hate these events) and all have elected for the cash. So each will have an extra £250 in their salary tomorrow. Hopefully this practice of christmas nights out will fall hy the way side over the next few years and save the business money.

Can I get a job in your place!!!
