Is it just me or is this song really dodgy?!?!

I have name changed so this thread can't be linked to old threads and this thread is completely outing! My DDs go to a dance school and are doing a Christmas show. I absolutely love the school and the teacher is amazing and has worked to give my DDs some much needed confidence boosts so I won't be saying anything to the teacher or confronting anyone or do anything really beyond pearl clutching here. My daughter is doing a dance to a song called Back Door Santa. I can't do a link so have attached photos of the lyrics. Please tell me I am reading into these lyrics something that isn't there cos it sounds bloody dodgy as fuck!

As has been pointed out but ignored already, Tubular Bells was not written for the Exorcist, it was just used in the film.

ReanimatedSGB · 29/11/2018 23:32

Could have been worse, it could have been Blurred Lines. Or maybe ...

Claw001 · 29/11/2018 23:34

I think the point was it was played in church and reminded some of the Excorist!

VeggyGravy · 29/11/2018 23:36

And David Bowie. Iggy Pop wrote a song about having sex with Sable starr when she was 13. Jimmy Paige and Lori Maddox.

VeggyGravy · 29/11/2018 23:38

OK, there's no need to ragepiss your pyjamas and start imagining it's all about the anal and the underage groupies

Hmm
GlitterPixie · 29/11/2018 23:40
Shock
CharlesChickens · 29/11/2018 23:42

Oh I didn’t realise it was Tubular Bells. I’ve never seen the Exorcist.

VeggyGravy · 29/11/2018 23:44

I don't think I've ever seen the exorcist but I have to say I find Tubular bells quite eery as well.

Bluerussian · 30/11/2018 00:05

Seriously dodgy lyrics, why on earth was that song chosen? Perhaps the teacher didn't listen to the words, only heard the music (giving the benefit of the doubt here).

Horrible song.

SylviaAndSidney · 30/11/2018 00:26

Confused The “back door” bit should have been a bit of a clue, that’s shocking for a child’s dance Shock

bringincrazyback · 30/11/2018 00:38

Good grief yep, definitely inappropriate. Lyrics that were meant innocently at the time can seem deeply dodgy now. ('Thank Heaven For Little Girls' and Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Clair' spring to mind...)

Beeziekn33ze · 30/11/2018 00:53

If the teacher likes the tune so much she should have written more appropriate lyrics. I'd have removed DD from the dance school rather than have her dance to that nasty crap.

Flewog · 30/11/2018 01:12

I don't actually disbelieve the OP, but this does border on unbelievable!

The song is more obviously inappropriate than any of the others mentioned here. Frankly I'm struggling to think of a more inappropriate song.

I think the kindest thing would be to give the teacher a heads up now; I expect the performance will draw a lot of complaints and they would be thoroughly deserved.

Dawsonforehead · 30/11/2018 01:17

Wowzers. Read the previous posts with an open mind thinking these lyrics must be open to interpretation. Then I read the lyrics. It's the mention of him seeing girls while the boys are out that creeps me out. Is the dance teacher old-school?

TemptressofWaikiki · 30/11/2018 02:23

It is quite a common theme for example there is also an old Blues number called 'Back Door Man'. It doesn't refer to anal and they had some seriously filthy lyrics, so not even down to tougher censorship. This refers to someone other than the husband sneaking around through the back door, i.e. the tradesman entrance while the husband goes out the front door.

Tangofandango · 30/11/2018 03:59

@bringingcrazyback There is nothing remotely dodgy about Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Clair". It was about him babysitting his 3 year old god daughter.

ambereeree · 30/11/2018 04:58

Read the lyrics again people. Its not about underage girls ffs. Its santa looking for bored houswives and giving the kids pennies to keep them out of the way. Back door isn't anal- he's creeping around houses.
Anyway yes OP I'd have to tell the dance teacher. Maybe say some parents msy find it offensive but not you because you're cool Grin

Urbanbeetler · 30/11/2018 05:07

As an aside - there was one bit in the album Tubular Bells which, when it was reached, the cat and the dog would always both get up and walk out.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 30/11/2018 07:03

Willie Dixon wrote "Back door Man" in the sixties. Like a load of blues songs of the era, it was quite sexually suggestive, about the idea that he would be creeping around shagging women while their partners are out/asleep. "I eat more chicken than any man ever seen" sounds innocuous, until you know that chicken in this context means young women.

I think this is just a poor copy of that, badly done. Unfortunate that 'back door' has become synonymous with anal and yeah, a bad choice for a song involving kids for no other reason than people hear the words 'back door' and 'little girl' in the same song and assume the worst.

Willow2017 · 30/11/2018 10:30

'Clair' is about babysitying his god daughter ffs!

Ok i maybe misread the meaning but the lyrics about a man trawling for housewives to have sex with is still crap for little kids.
Did they have a box of 'OMO' washing powder in thier kitchen window?😁😁😁 shows age

Ceilingrose · 30/11/2018 14:58

Whatever the origins of the song, it sounds extremely dodgy. I think I might mention it, approaching the issue carefully and assuming the teacher doesn't realise.

SpiritedLondon · 30/11/2018 16:05

I didn’t know that song but love it actually.... one for the grown up Christmas parties. However, it IS going to be viewed from a modern perspective and whatever the meaning at the time WILL be interpreted as “ Anal Santa” on listening to it. Although I’m confident that the kids are going to be clueless just the thought of having to listen to my DD singing that around the house in the lead up to the performance leaves me a bit cold. I would probably mention it to the teacher if I thought she would have time to change the song.

Flewog · 30/11/2018 16:32

The song was always adult, and the come/cum pun was likely always intentional.

Even if 'backdoor' hadn't become an extremely well-known metaphor for anal, it would be clearly inappropriate for a children's recital.

If I heard it now, without seeing the lyrics written down and given the context, I'd assume it was about anal sex.

bringincrazyback · 01/12/2018 14:28

'Clair' is about babysitying his god daughter ffs!

The point I was making was about how lyrics that are innocent in content are liable nowadays to get twisted and have dodgy meanings written into them where none were intended to exist.
