Chatting to a friend the other day and she was saying about a new wine shed tried and had I tried it. I said no, I don't particularly like wine or any alcohol for that matter.
She was like really? Why?
I said I just don't.
Then it got me thinking.
I used to drink.. A LOT. as a late teen early 20s. So to be honest I think it's the case of I feel like I've had 'my drinking days'. Coupled with the fact of a particular drink made me mega sick (. My fault for drinking more than I could handle lol) it put me off. So I think I've eliminated most drinks as th e thought makes me feel sick lol..

Some of us are enough fun without it too Hmm
Some of my best nights have been teetotal or low alcohol
Boozy parties are not a bit of me

I haven't been a weed smoker for about 10 years now (well before kids) and view alcohol as part of that same saga. I wouldn't drop ecstasy as a parent so why would I drop a bottle of sambuca?

I had my heaps of fun when I was young and could handle the hangover better
Now I'm older, wiser and enjoy being able to read a book and remember the end of movies

Hoppinggreen · 29/11/2018 19:02

I can drink one drink ( not wine). Any more and I get red and hot and then I don’t sleep well and feel shaky. If I have 3 or more drinks I wake up in the night having palpitations and struggling the breathe
Even before I was like this ( post 35 or so) I always got really awful hangovers where I could vomit on and off for up to 12 hours. It got t the stage where I could be virtually sober but still get a terrible hangover
It’s really not worth it

BendydickCuminsnatch · 29/11/2018 19:08

Don’t like the taste, it sends me to sleep, and is a waste of calories. Had a couple of occasions as a teen where I got really drunk and did not like the feeling at all, not being able to remember chunks of time etc. Never had a hangover in my life though, my dad is the same!

PrivateDoor · 29/11/2018 19:09

I would turn it around and ask why does anyone drink alcohol? I genuinely cannot think of any reason why anyone would want to. I appreciate some like the taste, but there's loads of nice non alcoholic drinks too. I genuinely have no idea what the appeal is.

Puffinhead · 29/11/2018 19:10

I prefer to drink tea! (Don’t go out much!)

Puffinhead · 29/11/2018 19:13

I’ve also had people look at me as if I’ve grown two heads when I tell them I don’t drink often (I do on rare occasions) - I don’t judge them but it does seem as if I’m in the minority.

Strokethefurrywall · 29/11/2018 19:15

I loved alcohol, would drink a few glasses most evenings, quit in August to do a whole30 and never really went back to it.
Well I had a massive event in NYC a few weeks back that involved a lot of booze and 4am staggers back to my room, but I didn't have to parent the next day or make sound or conscious decisions about life.
I generally only drink on special events like the work Christmas party - not sure I'll bother on Christmas Day, maybe a glass or two but doubt any more.
I don't drink at home at all anymore really and I work out a lot so alcohol will just hamper my workouts and make me sluggish so I don't bother.

I'm not prudish or boring, in fact I'm more fun now that I don't drink! Also a much better parent, wife and person generally!

TowerRavenSeven · 29/11/2018 19:19

It's twofold, #1 Migraines; #2 I really like how it makes me feel and I could see myself abusing it. Actually threefold: I have alcoholics in my family, just not worth it.

overitalready · 29/11/2018 19:24

Ive not been tee total for 6 years.
I was on the home from picking my daughter up from school at 3pm & couldnt wait to get home for a vodka.
I knew at that point enough was enough & i havent touched a drop since.
Best thing ive ever done

overitalready · 29/11/2018 19:25

*ive been tee total 🙄

BertieBotts · 29/11/2018 19:31

Currently no because I'm co sleeping.

Normally I drink very occasionally. I don't really like the taste unless I'm in the mood, which is rare. I would rather get properly drunk than just have a glass or two and that's rarely appropriate. Plus it makes me want to smoke, I don't smoke.

When I do have cause to though I enjoy it.

Dragonlight · 29/11/2018 19:34

I never have, have never been drunk either. I can't stand the taste. I also have an illness that gives me hangover like symptoms (nausea, dizziness, stomach upset , migraines) for free and I have no desire to add to that with alcohol.

RaiderOfTheKitchenCupboard · 29/11/2018 19:35

Stopped drinking alcohol when I was pregnant, then breast feeding, and didn’t miss it. I was never a big fan of wine or spirits anyway, and 0% lager tastes much the same as normal lager but with fewer calories and no hangover.

Bimwit · 29/11/2018 19:36

Taste does nothing for me. Find the whole thing boring.

TedAndLola · 29/11/2018 19:38

It tastes awful unless you mix it with a shit load of something nice... in which case, skip the alcohol and just have the nice thing.

It means I can't drive, and since walking is agonising for me that's a deal breaker.

I'm a type 1 diabetic and it's very, very hard to maintain stable blood sugar levels when drinking.

It's expensive.

It turns people into boring idiots.

Yura · 29/11/2018 19:38

alcohol has a taste, snd i really dislike it. tastes like a mixture if cheap vinegar and pepperspray to me

Moominfan · 29/11/2018 19:39

Don't like feeling tipsy. Not massively keen on the taste of alcohol. I like the creamy calorific drinks but would rather eat my calories

halfwitpicker · 29/11/2018 19:40

When I was pregnant I found it far more difficult to not drink coffee than not drinking alcohol

Goldenbug · 29/11/2018 19:45
  1. I don't like the taste.
  2. It's expensive.
  3. I'm on medicine that doesn't like it.
  4. It means you can't drive for a while.
  5. It makes people act like dicks. Even those who say that they don't act like dicks tend to act like dicks.
  6. I had a hangover once.
ChikiTIKI · 29/11/2018 19:46

If I do have a drink it's only ever something small and not usually just on a regular evening, more if we went to the pub with friends or to a party etc. I hardly drink at all in the winter though. I can't be bothered to order a taxi or whatever for the sake of having one or two drinks. I am driving to my work Christmas party tomorrow night so that I can leave the moment I've had enough, so I can take my baby to the library when it opens at 9am the next day and enjoy the morning, oh and I do happen to be pregnant at the moment but nobody in real life knows about that! And I wouldn't be drinking even if I wasn't.

I just have no problems having a good time without it :)

IRememberSoIDo · 29/11/2018 19:51

I never had a tolerance and always suffered with horrific hangovers. When I had the kids I stopped as it just wasn't worth it. I actually think I have an allergy or intolerance as I get so sick from very small amounts.

whitecatsandblackcats · 29/11/2018 19:56

Wish I knew more people like this in RL! I only drink a little a couple of times a year.

I stopped drinking while pregnant / breastfeeding / parenting toddlers. Then when I was able to start again I'd gone off it. I sometimes suffer from dizziness and and a feeling that feels slightly like being drunk, so I don't like to bring that feeling on deliberately with alcohol. Also DH always overdid it at parties so I always felt I had to be the sober one to get us home safely and see to the kids the next day. Plus it's expensive, tastes horrible, and turns people into idiots.

I'm dreading the work Christmas party - I'm fine not drinking but for some reason all the boozy people can't bear a non-drinker and feel the need to encourage them to drink shots / have more etc.

DaffydownClock · 29/11/2018 20:07

I hate the 'have to drink to enjoy yourself' mentality.
I doubt I have a bottle of wine in a year, and I don't miss it one bit.

Rayn · 29/11/2018 20:13

I don't know many people in RL who don't drink. I don't like it and would
Like to stop completely. I used to be a big drinker and for the past four years hardly bothered.
However, I like the idea of having a drink but once I have that first drink I regret it as it does not do the trick.

All my family members and friends drink and even though I am 44 I still feel peer pressure. Ironically one of my friends is a GP and does not get it that I don't like to drink!! You

WellGoshDarnIt · 29/11/2018 20:17

I used to drink when I was younger, but it was always spirits with a mixer, or alcopops - in other words, drinks that didn't taste of alcohol. I hardly drink anything now; I've fully embraced the fact that I find the taste of beer and wine revolting. I had an aperol spritzer thing last week on our wedding anniversary and ended up leaving half of it. I also get terrible headaches from booze, which certainly inhibits the desire to drink!
