Plus new stories! www.thebookseller.com/news/hcg-revamps-blyton-s-malory-towers-series-899566

Tragic really. I'm 49 and such a Gwendoline Mary. I'd have been fucking miserable there, yet I was addicted to those books.

If YABU then I am too! This is exciting!

StableGenius · 29/11/2018 11:15

I'm already casting it in my head. Miranda Richardson for Miss Grayling. Who for Mam'zelle? hmm.

Oh I would love to watch this! Brings back memories of begging my mum to send me to boarding school.

Miltonkeynesmummy · 29/11/2018 11:31

Frances de la Tour for Mamzelle Rougier

Miltonkeynesmummy · 29/11/2018 11:32

Imelda Staunton for Mamzelle Dupont

Lolly86 · 29/11/2018 11:33

This is very exciting news I adored the books as a kid....32 now 😊

recklessruby · 29/11/2018 11:37

I loved those books! Wonder who would play gwendoline Mary and bloody Alicia who was actually just a bitchy bully? Felt sorry for Gwen sometimes!

Whyamihere · 29/11/2018 11:39

A couple of years ago dd's ambition was to become a film director especially so she could film the Malory Towers series, I'll have to let her know she's been beaten to it

StableGenius · 29/11/2018 11:47

Genius casting suggestions for the Mam'zelles! And sorry to WhyamIhere's DD - mind you, rights being sold doesn't mean it'll come to anything yet... (But here's hoping.)

I'd love to see The Chalet School books turned into a television serial. Amazing. I wanted to go there and have Fruhstuck and rambles and use the Splashery....

AamdC · 29/11/2018 11:50

Wpuld it be set in the current dsy or when it was originally set, i want to have midnight feasrs , *and eat orange quarters at half time during a lacrossee match, and swim iin that sea water pool that has waves!

bellinisurge · 29/11/2018 12:15

This may be the best news I've heard all day.

StableGenius · 29/11/2018 12:19

Chalet School series would also be exceptionally welcome, SweetestThing.

I'm really wondering if they'll tone down some of the of-its-time nastiness.

brizzledrizzle · 29/11/2018 12:21

Tilde Swinton needs to be in it. Yay to Miranda Richardson.

Who would be in a chalet school series?

HildaZelda · 29/11/2018 12:27

Agree about Alicia being a nasty piece of work. I don't know how she was ever seen as a 'feisty heroine' when in reality she was a bitchy bully.

Lydiaatthebarre · 29/11/2018 12:42

Oh noooooo. Sorry to be a damp squid, but I think a TV series would ruin the books for future readers. They're just bound to get things wrong, have some of the parts played by actors who look nothing like how the characters are described in the books, and leave out key characters or completely change their storyline.

Leave Malory Towers as it is!!!!!!

SerenDippitty · 29/11/2018 12:46

Emma Thompson for Potty

MamaidhMathMath · 29/11/2018 12:49

I would love to see this. And yes @SerenDippity Emma Thompson would be perfect!

halfwitpicker · 29/11/2018 12:50

For real?!

justfloatingpast · 29/11/2018 12:51

Alicia was a pretty nasty piece of work.

I think Emma Thompson would make a better Miss Grayling than Potty.

But I don't think they should turn it into a TV series. Let Malory Towers live on the way we all imagined it as children.

Miscible · 29/11/2018 13:19

I'm not sure that they can claim to have empowering female leads when you look at the way they treated people like Gwen.

I think a TV series based on the Antonia Forest books would have much more potential.

SerenDippitty · 29/11/2018 13:21

Gwen did do some nasty things in her first term though. She stamped on and smashed Mary-Lou's prized pen and then tried to frame Darrell for it.

elliejjtiny · 29/11/2018 13:29

Could be awful, could be good, you never know with tv adaptations. I'll definitely be watching though.

StableGenius · 29/11/2018 13:32

It would be easy to get the tone wrong, I think. I'd hope they wouldn't be all sneery and 'Daisy Pulls It Off'. But would also be a mistake to take it too seriously. Tricky!

(An adaptation of the Antonia Forest Kingscote books is my all-time dream.)

Ohhh, I have to find these books on Amazon! I loved them when I was wee but only remember Gwendoline. You've brought back so many memories!

Off to Amazon to search for paperbacks 👏👏
