Our baby is 5 weeks old with ZERO hair.

AIBU to be super curious re what our son's hair will be like?!

Me and DH are polar opposites looks wise.

What are your guesses? (Just for fun...)

It's just my observation i don't know the science behind it. I notice it in very fair babies.. blondes tend to be bald babies (purely anecdotal) . dark hair tends to show in newborns even if its sparse.

BerriTerri · 29/11/2018 11:24

Anecdotally I have 5 blondes. Two born dark, 3 with blonde hair, even the prem one

theworldistoosmall · 29/11/2018 11:24

ds 1 - blonde stright hair
dd 1 - dark brown straight hair
dd 2 - light brown and curly
d2 2 - light brown with blond streaks afro

One parent afro, one parent straight light brown. Don't even ask about eyes lol

AjasLipstick · 29/11/2018 11:24

Oh my friend has long straight blonde hair and her DH's is very like the afro hair in your pic OP. Her DD's hair is lovely long curls....soft but tightish ringlets and the colour is a sort of treacle toffee which blonde bits.

Bloody beautiful.

theworldistoosmall · 29/11/2018 11:25

The only one that was bald was dd1 until she was about 8 months.

ScrambledSmegs · 29/11/2018 11:25

Betty my DB was born with a full head of dark hair but it all fell out before the age of 6 months, he then grew that amazing white-gold hair that some young children have. It's darkened over the years but he's still blond.

I've seen the weird hair colour-changing thing in quite a few baby boys, it's not a certainty but it's also not rare.

ScrambledSmegs · 29/11/2018 11:26

*Not that you were saying anything about that! But it's not 100% that a blonde child will have been a bald baby.

Cherries101 · 29/11/2018 11:27

If you are mixed race yourself then your kids will probably have lighter hair (blonde or brown) without an afro curl pattern.

6weeks7 · 29/11/2018 11:28

@Cherries101 I am mixed race. Half Caucasian half Afro Caribbean :)

I'm an Indian/south-east Asian mix and my husband is white with brown hair and green eyes. Both my kids had their hair colour change...

My eldest has always had brown eyes and he had dark hair at birth then it went quite fair (a kind of light caramel colour) between roughly 9-18 months, then darkened again and now at nearly 6 he has dark brown hair.

My youngest had blue eyes at birth, they went green in the first year and still are green (she is 4 and I hope they don't change as they're beautiful!), she also had dark hair at birth and it then went caramel blonde too and it's now settled on a mid-brown colour. She is overall "fairer" all round than her brother, a lighter skin too.

I love seeing the genetic mixes that come out!

BertramKibbler · 29/11/2018 11:34

My nephew has blonde, Afro textured hair with similar racial background

museumum · 29/11/2018 11:35

My son has very very curly hair for a european child. It's not quite proper afro but incredibly tight curls, he was bald for a year or so. I wonder if tightly curled hair grows in later? It seem anecdotally like it might, the only children i've seen born with lots of hair have very straight hair.

Lovejoyfull · 29/11/2018 11:36

It is so fascinating. Typically anything between but from my own experience the mix in your black side will play a big part. A lot depends on your paternal ancestry as you say your dad is black but if he is from the Caribbean he may be mixed. I am what you would call full black as neither parent is white but I have white ancestry on both sides of my family so I am light skinned as is the rest of my family with type 3 loose curls. My dh is white and two of my dc have straight hair with no wave or curl and the other dc is olive skinned with wavy hair. So even though I identify as fully black I clearly have European ancestry. But anything can happen and he may favour one side more heavily. Whatever, the hair will be gorgeous.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 29/11/2018 11:41

Asian / british (blonde, blue eyes) mix twins. One has black Asian, spiky hair and dark brown eyes. One has mousy European hair and hazel eyes. Both have Mediterranean skin tone (one yellower though). Often mistaken for Syrian or Turkish.
DT2 waas ginger for a while.

RomanyRoots · 29/11/2018 11:42

I like your husband, very model like Grin
My friend in same situation one child has blonde hair quite curly but not afro, and is white, and typically English rose, looking. The other is mixed with black afro hair. You'd never believe they were sisters from the same parents.

@Lovejoyfull my dad is also fully black, but has Portuguese in his family also, my mum is white, she is from Germany and has strong German roots. DH did a family tree and he could only find English as far back as 200 years ago. Not sure before then!

My hair is very dark brown with a loose curl, my exH has ginger very tight curly hair.
Dc1 was born with a full head of very thick black hair, then some fell out, grew to a beautiful brunette straight hair by 2, then grew thicker and curly, and now at 11 is thick wavy/curly brunette, has dad's skin colouring

Dc2 born with mousy brown fine hair, went blonde fine hair with curls, now dark blonde with medium thickness and curls. Has my skin colouring.

Every child is unique and beautiful 😊

guernicaa · 29/11/2018 12:06

Me and OH have similar hair to those in the pictures. I am mixed race (50/50 afro/caucasian) and OH is blond.

Our DS who is now 3 was born with very dark brown hair, promptly went bald, and then it slowly grew back as thick, light brown hair with loose curls (more curly at the ends and straighter on top).

Kind of like this:

guernicaa · 29/11/2018 12:07

it even has blond highlights like that boy in the picture. It's pretty cool tbh!

HildaZelda · 29/11/2018 12:13

My friend is a pale Irish redhead. Her husband is very dark Nigerian. Shaved head now but I've seen baby photos and he had a curly afro. Both their DC's have black afros but are both quite quite pale skinned.

littlepeas · 29/11/2018 12:18

My dh has black, very coarse, curly hair and I have fine, wavy blonde hair - we both have masses of it. Our 3 dc all have loads of dark blonde wavy hair - 2 of them started off much blonder and curlier and went darker and straighter as they got older. I never expected to have blonde dc with dh - he has very dark Mediterranean colouring.

halfwitpicker · 29/11/2018 12:20

Lucky lady if your hubster looks like that Grin
