To expect a teenager to say hello

What is the norm in this scenario? I come home from being out. Teen would most likely hear the car or front door shut. Should I be the one to shout upstairs 'I'm home!'? If I'm lucky I'll hear a grunt in response, or should my teen welcome me home with joy!? What happens in your house? Which way round should it work? Are you welcomed home, or ignored! Not just with teens, but OH too.

OH always, always greets me with a Hi love (and a kiss), DD (13.8) will 90% say hi if downstairs, I usually call up and ask if she wants a cuppa when I get home if she’s upstairs and she’ll call back ‘down in a minute’. She’s a good lass. I’m giving it another year until the real grunting starts.

I shout "hi boys",
they shout "hi" back,
the dog goes mental 🐶

I agree get a dog. Best welcome home ever. Even if you've just been away 5 mins

A colleague once phoned her ex asking when He was dropping the kids off. He told her that they were with her. She had been home two hours and they hadn't moved out of their rooms.

I would expect a hello at the first point when you are in the same room, which might not be when you actually get home. Shouting through the house isn't required, imo.

Greeting people/saying farewell is very important in our family. So I expect mine to come say hello when I get in - not just a hello but a physical presence.

Mine always has his head phones on. I don’t always go upstairs to tell him I’m back. He then comes down for food mostly and is surprised to see me.

I get grunts unless they want something - usually money or dinner!!! I love the fact that EE allows me to control their WiFi and data and I can gift all their data to me if I need to!! Mummy needing attention moment!!! Hahaha!!

This is why the writer Nora Ephron said when you have teenagers you should buy a dog so someone is pleased to see you when you get home.

If my teen doesn't have his headphones on he will shout hello back when I get home. The cat is far more friendly and always trots over to welcome me.
