I've been doing loads of reading/research on Fasting...Just out of interest and curiosity. However, when I tell people I'm fasting they're immediate reaction is "OMG your starving yourself" or "isn't Fasting bad for your health" etc or I often read and hear Personal Trainers/Dieticians claim it's just another way of reducing calories or it's all about Calories In vs Calories Out.

Is there anyone out there that Fasts whether it be 5:2, 16:8, 18:6, 24hour fasts, Alternate Day Fasts etc where we can share tips and offer support and speak of our personal experiences with Fasting. I feel like I just want someone to say "Oh yes, I've read that book, it was brilliant" or "I love fasting and incorporate it into everyday life". Its actually really hard to find Fasting Forums online so I figured lets go to Mumsnet :-) (I am a long time lurker and I have posted a few times and responded to peoples topics - I'm not a researcher or anything like that - I work in admin).

So I suppose I can start off by saying I first became interested in Fasting when my friend a few years back started the 16:8 Fasting so I thought I'd look around and try and find more information on this.

I found one guy Dr Jason Fung who's articles on his website were so interesting and I was hooked on reading more. I then read the Obesity Code and have recently just finished the "Ultimate Guide to Fasting" which again was a good interesting read. I've watched numerous YouTube videos and various smaller articles on the internet, all of which I find interesting. I know Fasting (from what I've read) is mainly aimed at people with Type 1 & 2 diabetes and who are morbidly or obese but Fasting can be done by most people providing you have no eating disorders and your have more than (something like) 6% bodyfat. Of course I know not everything works for everyone but I feel like I just need some people out there who also Fast on a daily basis and can offer advice/support for the harder days etc.

I started my Fasting journey on Mon 29th Oct where I started Fasting for 20hours Mon - Fri as I find Mon-Fri to be the most easiest. My start weight was 12st 4lb and today it is 11st 10lb. Of course I know a lot of this is probs water weight, however, its not just about the losing weight, I actually feel so much better in myself. I've not experienced any bloating, not experienced my usual afternoon dip where I feel really tired, I sleep better which is major for me because I can fall asleep easily but then literally wake up for around 2-3 hours each night - this has dramatically reduced. I count calories on MFP, have done for a long time and yes I get that to some people all I'm doing is putting myself in a calorie deficit but I really do feel so much better when I fast. I did try the 5:2 for about 4 weeks but I actually felt like I wasn't able to stick to the 500 calorie days, I manage better Fasting for 20-22hours and then I break my fast with lunch around 3pm and eat my tea. I suffer from dry hands and I often looked at them and thought god my hands look old and now that dryness has gone and they are soft again. I know this all sounds silly but is there anyone out there that does Fasting and has gained positives from it.

So I'm still Fasting but naturally I have reduced my calorie intake so I dont feel the need to count calories. What is interesting from my reading the books/watching the videos is that there is scientific evidence to show there is a difference between someone who is dieting and restricts daily calories to someone who Fasts but naturally restricts they're calories. Its weird!

Sorry for the long post. Just want to hear from others who do this :-)

I do t do 5:2 but I do a day of fasting about 2 or 3 times a month when I just drink alternate glasses of water and quality fruit juice. I find this is all I need to set me straight again.

SlowlyShrinking · 28/11/2018 14:07

Op, you could also google one meal a day and Gin Calhoun Stevens. She has a lovely Facebook group. It’s not really 5:2 that you’re doing so that thread might not be helpful Smile

Hi Loudhouse, I could have written your post! I've been fasting for a few months doing 16:8 but often 17:7. I truly feel its changed my life. Since the age of 14 (when I suddenly went from being skinny to plump) I've been yoyo dieting. I used to get thin then not be able to sustain it and the weight would pile back on. Once I reached my 40s I knew I couldn't go on like this. I wanted to find a long term way of managing my weight. I didn't want a diet (I've been on hundreds over the years) but a way of eating where I felt full, healthy and didn't put on weight. When I discovered fasting I kicked myself that I hadn't known about this years ago! It really does seem incredibly easy to lose weight, keep it off and feel great. Like you say this SO much more than calorie reduction. I actually feel like I'm eating more then before. I don't count calories, I don't watch my fat in take. I eat healthy, nourishing meals but in no way do I feel like I'm on a diet! I feel like some sort of magic happens when I'm fasting. I have so much more energy now, my long term niggly health problems have all greatly reduced or been resolved. I've lost about 10lbs even though I often feel like I've been very indulgent. I can't recommend it highly enough. I'm 100% certain I'll be eating this way for life.

Ds1 (age 25) lost 5.5 stone, using the 5:2 diet, and he swears by it.

Northernbeachbum · 28/11/2018 16:05

5:2 is fab, you can actually eat a fair bit if you plan on fasting days. The first week is hard then it just becomes normal and so worth it

PurpleAndTurquoise · 28/11/2018 16:21

Loads of threads on fasting on the Big/Slim/Whatever threads. Have a look under Topics.

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/11/2018 16:22

I lost 2 stone doing 16:8 earlier this year. I need to get back into it.

OracleofDelphi · 28/11/2018 16:29

I think that everyone is different, so for some it works really really well and there is science to back it up. For me - it made my eating massivly disordered (was already leaning that way in any case)..... I have struggled for 10 years to loose weight and I did IF earlier this year and I just got stuck in a cycle of gorging and not eating, and eating at weird times, and it wasnt good at all. Now doing SW and lost 9 lbs in 6 weeks and eating 3 meals a day and feeling much more in control. So I think it can be amazing but if you have an "issues" around food , it can make them worse. IMO

loudhouse18 · 28/11/2018 16:40

Ah hello there! There is people that do it haha!

Yeah I did read that you could eat more on the Fast Days on 5:2 however, for me, it was way easier to just Fast for so many hours then eat my normal foods. Of course I'm naturally reducing my calories as I mentioned but I do not starve myself by any means.

I don't do the 20hrs during the weekend because I love my wine on a Friday and Saturday evening but I will try 14-16 hours.

I usually have my tea by 6.30pmish so will press the button on my Fasting App and then I break it the next day around 2pmish, just ensure I drink lots of water which is easy as I've always been a water drinker (3-4 litres a day)....The first few days my hunger feelings were sooo prominent during 10am and 2pm but now they just come in waves and then disappear. I've been breaking my fast with vegetables and protein and then will eat my usual tea - nothing special just things like chicken pasta, fish, potatoes, cottage pies, stews....I've been keep a log of feelings/wellbeing/hunger pangs since I started it and each day just gets easier and easier.
