To cut a long story short, I found out I was allergic to fabric adhesive dressings when I had to wear a halter monitor for five days. I'd been have palpitations, which thankfully have turned out to be nothing really, ectopic heart beats which are more than likely hormonal.

Anyway, you have to wear those sticky pad things, like an ECG, but for five days while your heart is monitored by a little monitor thing you carry around with you.

Once they were removed, I had five target shaped rashes on my chest/tummy, which were mega itchy and sore at the same time. Bright red and bumpy, and quite clearly a reaction to something in the adhesive.

I popped along to the pharmacy, but they had a quick look and said I'd probably need a steroid cream to clear it up - so booked into GP. GP had one look and said -'That's an allergic reaction, why on earth didn't you tell them you were allergic to adhesives, I mean really, what did you expect!?' - Erm....I didn't flippin' know!! I've worn plasters all my life, including surgical dressing after 2 sections, with no reactions at all!

I'm not a bloomin' clairvoyant love!! Do GPs think that everyone knows everything about their own health? Why would we need GPs if that was the case!?

I have a similar reaction to some (few) plasters and not (most) others. Ingredients are not listed on plasters. Tough shit.

I don't know what the alternative would have been (take your own adhesive??) - fwiw micropore tape is innocuous and can be used to stick most things to your body Grin

mamatinny · 28/11/2018 13:28

I’d have asked who the hell they were taking too! Just because they’re drs doesn’t mean they can treat you like crap

DailyMailWankers · 28/11/2018 13:29

How odd! I actually wonder if your GP is wrong? I've had to wear a halter several times and always get these rashes, they clear up with some hydrocortisone cream from the chemist. My cardiologist says its completely normal and happens to most people...

Drogosnextwife · 28/11/2018 13:30

Well did you tell her all that? Surely she appologiesed if you did tell her.

PinkCalluna · 28/11/2018 13:31

Did you actually say that (or anything) to the GP or did you just seethe silently?

NancyDonahue · 28/11/2018 13:35

Surely the pharmacist could have just sold you hydrocortisone over the counter.

The rash is from the skin sanding they do before adhering the patches. Fyi.

Wolfiefan · 28/11/2018 13:46

Yep. Another thread. You were told on the other one YABU.

Foamybanana93 · 28/11/2018 13:58

ive had this too in the last week, seems to be adhesive on fabric plasters which have never bothered me before Confused

mortifiedmama · 28/11/2018 13:59

When I had DS they stuck one of those dressings in my hand to secure the cannula, I had a similar reaction and got a similar telling off from the midwife who took it off. I also had no idea! I've since mentioned it to medical staff, who just shrug and pop one on me anyway!

Blobby10 · 28/11/2018 14:45

I seem to be allergic to plasters from Wilko's but not from Boots. I wondered if the cheaper brand used a less skin friendly glue? So I'm not allergic to adhesive, just some adhesive!

CloserIAm2Fine · 28/11/2018 14:53

YABU

You should’ve just said “I didn’t know that I was until now” and moved on with your life

Stop starting multiple threads about the same non-incident!

shouldidoitspoilt · 28/11/2018 14:55

Why you so obsessed with it 😂

You sound like you have it in for the GP

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 28/11/2018 15:00

I had a similar experience. Found out I was allergic to steri strips and my skin blistered and I was in agony. I had to take them off. Phoned the surgery and they advised I saw the nurse to have it redressed who proceeded to have a right go at me for taking them off ‘you’ll get a horrible scar now!!’

LagunaBubbles · 28/11/2018 15:06

Didn't you just say "because I didn't know"? Confused

longwayoff · 28/11/2018 15:14

Last time a G P spoke to me like that (menopause, it's just natural stop making a fuss) I said 'Sorry, I understood I was coming to see a doctor, I'll come back when there's one here'. I was bloody furious and stalked out. He followed me out apologising. Don't let them g e t away with it.

ErickBroch · 28/11/2018 15:20

Second thread? Oh dear

aoeu · 28/11/2018 15:24

If you wear ECG pads for five days then you'll have vicious rashes, absolutely normal.

Waspnest · 28/11/2018 15:28

Is this a second thread? Confused Do you mean the one about the 'sly dig'? If so I think the OP of that one is on here? but is not the OP of this one head explodes....

ClothesHangingOnTheFloor · 28/11/2018 15:29

I did actually say 'I didn't know I was allergic, otherwise I would have mentioned it'...and she just sort of said 'ummm ok'....I didn't really know what to say after that ha ha!

The pharmacy did say he thought it was an allergic reaction, but wanted the GP to confirm, since it looked angry and red. I wasn't too bothered about making an appointment, we're relatively lucky where we live in that we can usually get an appointment either on the day or the next day if needed.

For everyone saying this is a multiple/second thread - this is the first time I've made a post on Mumsnet. I have commented one other time on a post someone else made....so I am not sure what that means? Can you point me in the direction of the other threads? It's completely possible I posted in error....

OP posts:
ErickBroch · 28/11/2018 15:31

Yes orrr you made another account to post again.

Waspnest · 28/11/2018 15:31

Ah don't worry OP, I think people are confusing this with another thread.

AGHHHH · 28/11/2018 15:33

What a stupid cunt of a doctor you saw!

Perfectly1mperfect · 28/11/2018 15:39

Glad you spoke up and told her you didn't know you were allergic. I've found some GPs think they can just say what they like and lots of people don't answer back.

I can wear plasters on my hands no problem but I have had reactions on my arms and legs. No idea why. Confused

I'm very impressed that you can get an appointment with a GP so quickly though. Shock
