Two Swedish Mums trying to encourage people to "give up flying for a year" because it's bad for the environment.

www.bbc.com/news/av/world-europe-46362159/the-two-swedish-mums-who-want-people-to-give-up-flying-for-a-year

However,

Lotta has three children (don't know how many the other has but she's 36 and had a newborn last year)
They appear to have missed the memo that says having kids is one of the most destructive things you can do to the environment.

"One fewer child per family can save 'average of 58.6 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions per year'"

So you're saying people should be perfect before they are allowed to promote eco friendly behaviour?

Harpingon · 28/11/2018 15:31

I would have to agree with you.

LadyinLavende · 28/11/2018 20:27

@DrunkOnCalpol
No, not at all. I am suggesting that nagging people to give up flying on the grounds that it is bad for the environment seems a bit two-faced if you don't care enough for the environment to limit the size of your own family since adding to the global population is also an acknowledged cause of increased carbon emissions.

Bambamber · 28/11/2018 20:41

But the point is they can't change the size of their family. So they may have become more aware after having their fanily

Neverender · 28/11/2018 20:42

I use the odd plastic straw - should I stop recycling? People aren't perfect!

PermanentlyFrizzyHairBall · 28/11/2018 20:42

They're just promoting not flying for a year which is a good thing. Unless they're actually berating people for being unenvironmental I don't have a problem with it.

Birdsgottafly · 28/11/2018 20:43

They aren't nagging anyone, they've started a campaign.

Interesting use of nagging, that's been used to shut Women up since time began, when they had a valid point.

Knittink · 28/11/2018 20:48

YABU. Raising awareness of these things is good. It's pretty silly to say nobody should ever allowed to promote any good action unless they were perfect themselves. I imagine national treasure David Attenborough has boarded a few planes in his time. Does that mean he shouldn't be encouraging people to help rid the world's oceans of plastic? Nope.

Caprisunorange · 28/11/2018 20:50

What’s the fixation with children? It’s not listed as high on the causes of environmental damage - certainly not as high as air pollution

OutPinked · 28/11/2018 20:52

YABU. You can be a parent and also look out for the environment. Reusable nappies for example, second hand clothing/toys, wooden rather than plastic, vegan diet etc. Some parents will be more eco friendly than non parents.

starcrossedseahorse · 28/11/2018 21:15

Having children is hugely damaging to the environment - there is no avoiding that.

Caprisunorange · 28/11/2018 21:15

So is air pollution though

Vvmevvme · 28/11/2018 21:19

Meh I had an interesting conversation the other day and there are some very serious scientists questioning the whole carbon emission question anyway.

The data doesn’t stack up.

Vvmevvme · 28/11/2018 21:20

Out wouldn’t include vegan diet in there unless you only eat locally grown veg,
Don’t care about synthetic fertilisers, and aren’t concerned with pasture land, local wildlife and the honeybee.
