That this decision by Rotherham Council is unbelievable!

Well, not really unbelievable in this era of craziness but make me furious. It seems like the girls who were victims of these gangs still don't have any value (judging by the subsequent treatment by the Council) and their emotional and physical wellbeing is completely dismissed so that a rapist can see his child. What were Rotherham Council thinking!!??

Members of Parliament calling for amendment to a primary Act that they can't even name and talking about 'British law' - they mean England and Wales etc etc.

So this debate has morphed into something quite beyond the original (misreported) story and we have people think its apparently absolutely ok to talk about reforming a law they can't even identify, let alone understand.

Upstart - yes that was the one, thank you.

Everyone in that Transparency Project article is accorded the dignity of their surname, except the rape survivor, who is referred to throughout only by her given name. "We are not in a position to judge Sammy, or indeed anyone else". "Our Chair, Lucy Reed, appeared on the show" "We’ve had brief twitter exchanges with MP Louise Haigh". The only time the survivor's surname is used is in direct quotes from other sources.

No-one else in that story, other than the survivor, is referred to by their given name alone. All the grown-ups, and especially the big grown up lawyers, get surnames. She gets a pat on the head and is treated as a child.

Why, Spero, is the survivor the only person so infantilised? Why are Louise Haigh and Lucy Reed named as adults, while you can't bring yourselves to use Sammy Woodhouse's name?

Dunno, I didn't write it. Ask the ones who did.

But I agree with you, it isn't right to distinguish between people. Either all get surname or none.

not sure that this mistake detracts from the quality of legal analysis however, but do feel free to argue differently. I can see that we are now inhabiting a Brave New World where what I 'feel' is of much greater importance than what I 'know'.
