To hate non-school uniform days?

The arguing about what to wear. The changing of clothes. The decision to wear a different pair of shoes thus requiring a change of tights.

I thought this time I’d nailed it. Got the DTs to decide what to wear last night. But this morning...carnage.

They have perfectly nice clothes which they chose and said they wanted. Will they wear any of them? No. DT2 wanted to wear her party dress and DT1 her PE socks.

I want to go back to bed and start today over!

I don't mind them Dd doesn't really care and goes in in jeans and a hoody. I don't like that we have to pay for it and the kids are expected to go along with it.

this is why non-uniform schools are a good thing - clothes are then just clothes. None of this angst.

BetsyBigNose · 28/11/2018 09:33

Ha! you're not alone! DD1 was just like this in Primary, but (weirdly) now she's in Secondary, she's far less bothered by what she wears - as long as it's got Harry Potter emblazoned on it somewhere...

DD2 (who is nearly 10) has only been joining in non-school uniform days for the last 18 months, before which she was always too terrified that she would be the only child not in school uniform (despite me double checking the website, showing her letters confirming the date and her big sister being in her own clothes!).

I thought from your title, your DC were wearing uniform at weekends!

I don't mind non uniform days. The DC just wear what they'd wear for a normal weekend day and are far more comfortable.

My DS2 has autism & can struggle with non-uniform days. I have to prep him days in advance for them! For Children in Need recently they had to put clothes on back-to-front and he just could not get it! He is very logical & just could not understand why he couldn't wear his clothes the right way round. In the end, I told him that his adored headmaster was being silly & fortunately he thought that was good. However, had he been having a bad week, it could have easily ended up in meltdown Hmm Not easy at all.

We have one tomorrow (secondary) for charity. Quick and easy way to raise cash, all good. I've been told to prepare for carnage! Apparently it's always mad on non-uniform days, it's my first here so I'm dreading it!

gamerwidow · 28/11/2018 09:49

DD used to be a nightmare too because she always wanted to wear shorts or a summer dress in the dead of winter or similar. Now she’s older she’s not that bothered and we can just chose something the night before and she’s fine.

Collectorofcookbooks · 28/11/2018 09:54

It's cold comfort I've 5 more years of this before they'll be at secondary and hopefully won't care any more Grin

YY to the wanting to wear totally unseasonal clothing.

Oh cripes re title ShowofHands See? SEE what it's done to me. Time for a coffee!

DT2 wanted to wear her party dress and DT1 her PE socks.

Any reason why they couldn’t do that?

I have to agree with a PP you don’t get any of this angst if they don’t have a school uniform at all.

TidyDancer · 28/11/2018 11:44

I hated non uniform days when I was at school because we were poor and I had only one set of nice clothes so had to wear them each time. This will still be the case for families these days (I was at school in the 80s/90s). I got picked on because of this.

My DCs luckily don't have the issues I had in that respect but days like this are more trouble than they're worth imo.

howabout · 28/11/2018 11:51

DD3 doesn't really have any clothes not suitable for a non-uniform day (non-seasonal clothes are filed away). Actually has very few clothes as she would only ever choose to wear her favourite.

All this is much easier than with DD1 and DD2 as I don't bother worrying about what she is / ought to be wearing in the same way I did with them.

Theme days are the bane of my life though.

Methyl · 28/11/2018 12:31

Another thread on MN which has made me grateful my DC's school doesn't have a uniform. Clothes are just clothes.

SnuggyBuggy · 28/11/2018 12:34

It's when there is some stupid theme that means you have to go out and buy something that it gets annoying

CantsitWontsit · 28/11/2018 12:37

My DS always and inexplicably outgrows all his clothes the night before, in some magical bastard growth spurt.

Then we ALWAYS forget the wine/chocolate donation or don't have any change for the monetary donation.

Then, just as we have resolved all these issues (seasoning down the sofa for change/biscuits substituting chocolate/squash substitutes wine 😓) , and we are leaving the house, DS manages to spill something down himself....

Aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!

Sockwomble · 28/11/2018 12:47

Ds thinks he is not going to school and then gets upset when his taxi arrives. Everyone looking different from usual also bothers him.
