To ask coughers and sneezers to cover their fucking mouths?

On train platform. It's raining so we're all forced to huddle under the one small shelter. Guy next to me is coughing away. Sounds phlegmy/ wet. He's coughed numerous times. I'm stood near him with baby in buggy (thankfully rain cover acting as a sneeze guard).

I'm probably more sensitive about this than most as my eldest has a chronic respiratory illness and is in hospital most of the time. In fact the reason I'm getting the train at this time with the baby is to get to the hospital and take over so my husband to get to work.

But anyway, my own reasons aside, AIBU to moan about this thoughtless guy and to ask everyone to remember to please please attempt to keep your germs to yourself?

yanbu

RedWineIsFabulous · 28/11/2018 06:53

YANBU

People can be revolting.

CheekyRedhead · 28/11/2018 06:58

I'm sat by a cougher at work. She drives me mad not covering her mouth yet she gets her antiseptic hand wash out for herself all the time 😡

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 28/11/2018 07:01

I notice this alot. Disgusting. Yanbu

Chouetted · 28/11/2018 07:10

YANBU, but for God's sake don't berate him in public unless you know his medical history. I cough as an asthma symptom, and while I try my best, I do occasionally get surprised, or need my hand for other things... I'm pretty confident asthma isn't contagious like that, anyway.

MondayImInLove · 28/11/2018 07:25

YANBU that is disgusting

Esker · 28/11/2018 07:28

@Chouetted I didn't say anything and you're absolutely right. In fact my older son is in the same boat, and as a toddler doesn't understand about covering his mouth (which I guess makes me a hypocrite 🤷🏻‍♀️). But my AIBU is directed to those who know they've come down with something which could be transmitted and it is those i implore to cover their mouths! 🤧

Yanbu. Very common though...

Bluerussian · 28/11/2018 08:00

Or even their ordinary mouths ;-).

Yes, it's very thoughtless and ill mannered. Shame they have to drag themselves into work though. Always remember my mum saying, "You don't take time off for a cold", but she never went to work. I've had some dreadful colds in the past with accompanying headache and feeling awful. A couple of days looking after myself at home would have suited me fine.

Lockheart · 28/11/2018 08:05

YANBU. Also if all those who stand next to you on the train and proceed to sniff every 5 seconds for the whole journey could blow their nose (appropriately, without any exaggerated elephant trumpeting which I maintain is entirely unnecessary) that would be wonderful.

Sexnotgender · 28/11/2018 08:08

YANBU, people are rank.

OliviaStabler · 28/11/2018 08:11

YANBU. It's like some people were never taught basic manners.

mrpoopybutthole · 28/11/2018 08:21

YANBU its basic hygiene. I was on an escalator in a busy shopping mall once & the guy behind me sneezed on the back of my head! Like full on, no attempt to cover it or even apology. I had to walk around for rest of the day with his germs in my hair. I've never been so disgusted.

RTFT · 28/11/2018 08:31

And yawners! I hate people who don't cover their mouths when yawning

Deschain · 28/11/2018 09:06

YANBU. I work in a shop, and countless times people cough in their hand, then hold the same hand out to take their change. Grim.

AiryFairyUnicornRainbow · 28/11/2018 09:50

YANBU I hate it and deliberately move away from people who are coughing without trying to cover up, these days.

Not attempting to keep germs to oneself is disgusting

Just so thoughtless, inflicting that shit on other people, for all they know, the person they have just coughed into the back of their hair in the post office que could be on chemo, or awaiting an operation

nutellalove · 28/11/2018 11:14

YANBU. I try and move away from said people though not always possible on a crowded train.Angry

justfloatingpast · 28/11/2018 11:39

YANBU and this is why I never buy uncovered bread or cakes in shops. Because I am quite sure many people have coughed and sneezed over them, instead of turning away.
Some people really are disgusting.

ZebraOwl · 28/11/2018 12:04

Lockheart
I offer those people tissues. I doubtless spend a fortune on supplying what feels like roughly half SE London with tissues, but...

Esker · 28/11/2018 12:13

Thanks to all... I knew I wasn't really being unreasonable but I just wanted to moan Grin

Fairyliz · 28/11/2018 12:13

Well I can understand what you are saying but I am not sure that coughing into your hands would prevent all of the germs escaping?
Then even if they do, presumably the germs go on their hands which then touch doors etc so germs are still spread.

Not really sure what the answer is other than eating healthily to boost your immune system and regular hand washing.

nutellalove · 28/11/2018 14:04

@Fairyliz ideally people should sneeze into the crook of their elbow to solve that problem. Or sneeze in a tissue. If not possible then hand is the best option - containing to your own hand rather than on the faces of other people! And wash said hand with soap when possible. Agree with you about immunity too but besides germs it's just disgusting to have someone sneeze on your face Envy

Fluffyears · 28/11/2018 14:35

I have allergies so blowing my nose does no damn good. I would be blowing it constantly as it can constantly run. I’ll sniff thank you if I need to.
