Hi all

Sorry posting for traffic. I have two young DC who seem to be catching every bug going at the mo (one is in reception year so I guess is normal) the problem is.... I catch everything they get and I end up more ill than everyone combined!!

Since July we have had two stomach bugs which has took me, OH and both kids down within 48 hours, my eldest vomited once then had no appetite for days but otherwise fine, youngest just had the runs, OH vomited twice and then slept and felt ok just hangover feeling whereas I was vomiting and had the runs for 12hours constantly every five minutes, I was lay on the floor sobbing wanting to literally die, I couldn’t walk I was crawling, I couldn’t even make the kids or myself a drink, which my OH managed to do. This happened both times with both stomach bugs.....

A few weeks ago we had a virus that caused a pounding headache and fevers/shivers etc, eldest complained head was a little sore, OH felt his skull was pounding but was fine to continue work and finish his shift and deal with complaints (he’s a manager) I caught it and started with skull pain, I had to lie down crying with sunglasses on as the room wasn’t dark enough, it felt as if my skull was being hit with a hammer, I couldnt drive for two days as the headache lingered so badly my vision wasn’t as good and I was slightly lightheaded, my mum had to do the school run for me. I then spent two days feeling I had been in a car accident as my spine and neck also experienced this pounding pain.

We now have a cold, kids coping fine, my chest is so sore and I feel like shit, OH not caught it at all (he usually never catches colds)

I am so sick of it!! How can I boost my crappy immune system? I know they say it’s good for kids to be ill as it boosts immune system so what on earth is wrong with mine I’m 30!!

I did read once online that people with negative blood group tend to feel worse with stomach bugs (I have O- blood) and beginning to wonder if it’s true as I certainly didn’t cope anywhere near as well as OH or kids, I couldn’t move!!

Anyone any advice? Sorry it’s long!! Xx

Get your GP to run some bloods. My immune system was spectacularly bad before I was diagnosed T2 diabetic..... I was literally ill all the time. Since going onto medication and sorting my diet out, I've not had one single bug/virus.

You are what you eat too. Loads of home made veg soup at this time of year, take a multivitamin and a soluble high dose vitamin C every day. If I'm tired or stressed, my immune system takes the hit first.

And this is so so common with kids that age. I found once mine got to around 7/8, their immune systems had massively improved and they brought far less home. It will improve, honest. Lots of hand washing when they get home, a good diet and multivitamin and not getting too tired will help them massively too.

Vitamin D, make sure it's high strength D3 (These are the ones I take www.iherb.com/pr/Healthy-Origins-Vitamin-D3-10-000-IU-360-Softgels/21298)

B12, Vit C

You'll be amazed what a difference it makes. We rarely are ill now.

Wash hands regularly and make sure everyone else does too.

Clean door handles and bannister rails daily. Clean remote controls, phones, screens etc as well.

Zinc and multi vitamin supplements may be useful.

It's a long phase but it will pass (in a few years!)

Lots of soups and stews with lots of vegetables. Chicken soup is meant to be very good for you.
Make sure everyone washes hands as soon as they get in.
Be active. Go for lots of walks. Take hot drinks with you.
Keep warm.

Try taking probiotics- they massively helped me shake off recurrent bad illness and good luck, it absolutely sucks

mycatistoo · 27/11/2018 23:15

DH and I take echinacea, elderberry syrup, vit c, zinc, vit d and have regular saunas. We rarely get sick even though ds is at preschool and a walking germ factory.

More live/unpasteurised foods for your gut microbes

With me it was colds,Calpol for her and better whilst I spent six months going from one cold to another.HR told me I should improve my immunity!

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 28/11/2018 02:46

Apart from taking basic steps e.g. ensure everyone in the house has good hand hygiene, you regularly clean things plus ensuring you have enough sleep and aren't vitamin/iron deficient there is very little you can do. You will find people boasting how doing X and Y improved their immunity but this ignores the fact they have very good immune systems in the first place. I don't have one so all I can do is do the basic steps then be on alert for the first signs and symptoms that I'm coming down with anything. I then treat the signs and symptoms to decrease the length of colds - I very rarely get vomiting bugs but do get other infections.

Oh and be careful on how much vitamin D you take. Ideally you want to be tested to ensure you take the right amount but getting that test via a GP unless you have an underlying condition won't be easy. (It isn't the GPs fault.)

You’ve pretty much described me there OP! But I have found the winning combination of vitamins and supplements:

2 x 600mg monolaurin capsules
1 x l-lysine tablet
1 x reishi mushroom capsule

(They are all immune system boosters)

Also:

1 x probiotic
1 x good quality multivitamin.

I feel bulletproof now.
