Granny incontinence

She’s a very proud woman, widow recently. Been to the doctors and in is on various medications for her health issues. But is now almost house bound as ashamed to go out and about. She has pads she getting used to. She got upset about it today and I don’t know how else to advice her.

Has she been referred to a continence nurse?

frogprincess84 · 27/11/2018 22:56

Yes, continence clinic and/or pelvic physio referral. People of all ages attend those, your poor granny doesn't have to be embarrassed about it or suffer it - they have heard and seen it all before

Yes, continence clinic. Various things, there's the obvious Kegel exercises, also diet (no caffeine, alcohol, chocolate) can have spectacular results, that's before you get to any more "medical" things.

I'm assuming this is bladder incontinence not bowel.

I assume she has had a urine test for a chronic uti? I have a relative who had this problem she is on an low level antibotic preventative course (her words, ) after seeing a urologist.

I would suggest seeing if she urologist or gynae referral.

OP, re the pads your Granny is getting used to. There are disposable pants with the pad as part of them. Not nearly as uncomfortable although expensive, they are available in Boots.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/11/2018 23:13

I was going to say - probably half her friends have the same problem, and I've just googled and found estimates of prevalence of some degree of urinary incontinence to be between 40% and 50% of all women. There's a reason why the Tena section of the supermarket is as large as the sanpro for periods section!

OP, re the pads your Granny is getting used to. There are disposable pants with the pad as part of them. Not nearly as uncomfortable But a lot more difficult to change if you're wearing trousers. And it's not good to be tempted to wear a full pad for too long.

There's loads of medication that can be prescribed for this, it's a very common problem and not enough people see their GP's, they just put up with it buying pads.

yes but if its not a long outing maybe better for confidence. My Mum despite some memory and processing issues managed fine when she needed them
