To be annoyed by these nuts?

I'm probably unreasonable and I'm prepared for people to not agree but as an allergy sufferer this really bugs me.

Are there not any control measures in place in-store in supermarkets with regards to allergens?

Supermarkets now sell nuts at Christmas in net bags which are placed next to unpackaged products in the fresh fruit and vegetable aisles.

How are they approaching the cross contamination issue here as so many people suffer from life threatening nut allergies?

If someone handled these net bags of nuts, which are partially open due to the design of the bag, and then handled the fresh produce and put it back this would cause cross contamination.

Is it necessary to sell the nuts in this way when so many people are suffering reactions to traces of nut products?

There have been so many news reports of people dying over the last year due to carelessness surrounding allergen controls.
Wouldn’t selling nuts in secure packaging help to work towards keeping people safe?

And breathe! Smile

minisoksmakehardwork right, so basically you are saying because we cannot eliminate all risks we should not even attempt to eliminate the risks we can?

How does "put nuts in a separate area" turn into "bag all the flowers in spring"? since we can't do the latter we should not attempt the former?

how about, since car accidents are inevitable let's scrap all traffic rules and apply common sense? let's just trust people will stop when it makes sense, sounds good?

and frankly, my child is not molly coddled when we attempt to reduce the risk he might die for an allergic reaction, and he can use his common sense, he has to if he doesn't want to die, it's other people's common sense that concerns me

people have an incredibly cavalier attitude to allergies, the number of times I have asked if something had nuts in and people just reassure me they don't only for me to find they in fact do, this includes an air hostess on a long haul flight who once told me all their meals are nut free, only for me to open my son's tray and discover a huge macadamia nut on his dessert, on a long flight you can't get to hospital...

Because if you choose to isolate nuts, why not also isolate every other allergen that could cause a problem.

It's impossible. And I say that because I know. It's fucking hard giving a 7 year old the same opportunities with food as their friends when they are allergic or intolerant to wheat, gluten, dairy, egg, soya, banana, nuts and latex. Have you ever had to organise a birthday cake without the majority of that lot?

So you educate everyone of the risk instead.
