Tutor and grammar

I’m looking for a tutor to help my son prepare for entrance assessment to a specific school at age 13+.
There aren’t many people who mention the school on their website, but I’ve found a lady who does.
Problem is, she states, “this course is run by myself and my colleague Mrs xyz”.
Myself is wrong there isn’t it? Really putting me off her Confused

I don't think it's wrong at all. Seen it in a few places.

Craft1905 · 26/11/2018 14:35

A tutor who puts "myself" instead of "me" to try and look clever should be avoided like the plague.

I'm with you.

thinkful · 26/11/2018 14:38

Nope, it's grammatically correct, I'm sure. Probably sounds a bit OTT but that's the intention if you're trying to sell something and it's to clarify that the person writing and owning the tutor business is the one running the tuition. Makes sense to me.

HeyMicky · 26/11/2018 14:40

It should be "me". I would not have her tutor for an entrance exam

Ellisandra · 26/11/2018 14:41

Tutor’s spent too long watching The Apprentice.

broadstairs · 26/11/2018 14:43

It should be “me”. Keep looking.

Furrycushion · 26/11/2018 14:43

"Myself" sets my teeth on edge. Avoid! Of course it's incorrect.

shockthemonkey · 26/11/2018 14:43

You're right, in that sentence "myself" is incorrect!

shockthemonkey · 26/11/2018 14:47

Sorry thinkful, but "myself" is reflexive and for something you do to yourself. Such as "I'm giving myself a well-earned break"... or, "I just cut myself while chopping onions".

Steamedbadger · 26/11/2018 14:50

Find a different tutor

shockthemonkey · 26/11/2018 14:51

"Seen it in a few places" is sadly absolutely no guarantee that it's correct, MonaLisa

Pinkyyy · 26/11/2018 14:52

'Myself' is correct in this sentence and (arguably) sounds better than 'me' would. I was taught in school that 'xyz and I' or 'myself and xyz' was the correct way to say this, not 'me and xyz'

Steamedbadger · 26/11/2018 14:57

This is a good explanation en.oxforddictionaries.com/grammar/when-to-use-myself-and-yourself

howabout · 26/11/2018 14:59

Wrong on so many levels. Either Mrs xyz and me or by me, with input from Mrs xyz.

Eg Come to the park with Tilly and me (not me and Tilly and not myself and Tilly)

PS Grammar is not even part of the Scottish (where I am) syllabus and yet this would put me right off a tutor.

Dahlietta · 26/11/2018 15:01

Definitely incorrect, but a fast-growing horror. I don't remember hearing it used like this until about 10 years ago and now it's everywhere.

Pinkyyy · 26/11/2018 15:04

It appears I'm incorrect! Grin In that case I'd keep looking

MollyHuaCha · 26/11/2018 15:09

It's wrong. It should be 'This course is being run by Mrs XYZ and me'.

A lot of people don't like using 'me' in a sentence because others incorrectly assume it's wrong, in which case she should phrase it as something along the lines of 'I am running this course together with Mrs XYZ'.

howabout · 26/11/2018 15:09

Just musing on objects and subjects. The whole sentence would be better worded .... I run this course with my colleague, Mrs xyz.

howabout · 26/11/2018 15:11

X-post Molly Smile

MollyHuaCha · 26/11/2018 15:18
Wink
BertrandRussell · 26/11/2018 15:20

My colleague Mrs X and me. So two mistakes in one sentence.

Abra1de · 26/11/2018 15:21

Using myself like this is not correct.

The fear of using me in a sentence is becoming pathological.

BertrandRussell · 26/11/2018 15:21

"I was taught in school that 'xyz and I' or 'myself and xy"
These are both wrong!

Holidayshopping · 26/11/2018 15:21

I don't think it's wrong at all. Seen it in a few places.

It must be right, then Grin.

No, OP-you are right to worry. I would not touch this tutor with a barge pole. In fact, I would probably feel compelled to email her and say something!

tiggerkid · 26/11/2018 15:23

Incorrect but I find there is an increasingly growing number of teachers, who are like that. My son's science teacher couldn't even spell simple words properly. I think basic grammar must be made a mandatory requirement for all teachers regardless of the subject they teach.
