Dowstairs flat keep triggering fire alarm

I live in a block of flats. The basement flat had building work done some years ago to join into the house in the adjacent street which they had purchased to make one huge property.

The problem is, since they moved in, they keep on setting off the communal fire alarm. This happens about every 6-8 weeks. They are completely unapologetic and have been very rude when i've asked them about it. I've had the managing agents check their system and replace the alarm sensor in their property, but it keeps happening. They seem to be leaving food unattended when cooking and it burns.

I have a small baby and as well as it being a complete pain having to wake her to evacuate, I am starting to worry about the safety of the building. A lot of the other flat tenants don't even bother evacuating now because they assume its a false alarm caused by the basement flat, which I think is really dangerous.

What can I do to stop them setting off the alarm or one day causing a fire? They can get out quickly being on the bottom floor but it will be more difficult for the rest of us! AIBU to report them? But to who? The fire brigade?

The alarm needs to be moved if it is being set off too easily. They probably can't help it. I doubt very much that they are deliberately leaving food to burn.
Who would?
I'm sure it nust be irritating but yabu in assuming taht they are doing it deliberately.

Yes, fire brigade, but not as an emergency. Look up your local Community Fire Safety number or the fire officer and talk to them. You can usually find some contact details if you google your county or town and "fire brigade advice"

They will probably be happy to come out and see what can be done to prevent it happening regularly. Make sure you focus on the fact that residents are starting to ignore the alarm as it happens so regularly!

Ok thanks for the good advice!

Sometimes we can smell the burning food! I already asked for it to be checked to make it less easy to trigger from just a little cooking smoke for example.

I had to arrange this for them! They don't seem to care about inconveniencing the whole block

I don't think they are doing deliberately obviously!! But being careless.
They have sometimes let their young children make toast for example and they forget it's on. This is what they have said to be the cause once before.

If it is cooking then they have a REALLY simple option - install a heat alarm where that smoke alarm is and put a replacement smoke alarm somewhere else on the same floor.

Fire brigade also because it sound VERY odd to have one residential house extended to include a flat in another building. I am sure that could be breaking all sorts of fire regulations too, as it breaches fire walls etc!

Frauline · 26/11/2018 13:56

Thanks Curiousaboutsamphire - yes this is what I'm worried about - breaching fire walls. They may have considered it in their building works but who knows.
Are the fire brigade the people to check this or do I need to somehow contact the local council about the building plans?

If they are regularly leaving cooking food unattended, toast burning etc that is a fire risk for the entire building. I would definitely contact the fire brigade and ask for advice on this.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/11/2018 16:12

Start with the fire service. If there is any breach of fire regs they will take it further with any appropriate agencies.

Questions like these is what the Community Service is there for!
