Posting for traffic.

I had 3 frames above the head of the bed but have taken them down after a few months as cannot get out of my head the damage they could do if they fall down onto our heads - DD age 4 often sleeps in my bed.

The wall is a painted feature wall but now looks plain.

Other than a dreamcatcher, poster, wall rug or canvas, can anyone suggest something to place on the wall that is modern but less dangerous?!!

Could you get a bed with a headboard attached so it can't come off? Though I think the odds of a headboard falling like that, attached or no, are vanishingly small tbh.

Headboard!

Lucylugs · 26/11/2018 09:12

I made a large headboard out of very heavy cardboard covered in luxurious fabric and tacked it to the wall. Look like hotel bed with lots of matching cushions.

Wall rug or canvas will need some sort of a framework to hold it straight, so if you're worried about pictures falling you should equally worry about them.

Large decals

BellsAreRinging1 · 26/11/2018 09:31

@espressobutler

I will have to look at them

For any confusion, I do have a headboard, it's for the wall space above that.

In 20 odd years of home ownership I have never had a picture fall off a wall. I use the method below:

Get lightweight frames from light woods or plastic. Don’t use glass, safety frames contain light Perspex. Use proper picture wire at the back of the frame and overlap and wind at least 2” at each end. Use proper picture hook hangers and even though your frames are light use the triangular double pin kind. Apply the hanger correctly to the wall. The hanger should sit flush with the wall and when the pin is applied it will be angled downward which is a stronger attachment. If you want to be sure pop a pea size blob of no more nails behind the hanger before you tap in the pins. Flatten the hanger hook slightly and make sure the wire is correctly seated in the hook when you hang the picture. Don’t fiddle with the picture unnecessarily and only dust it lightly so not to put additional weight onto the hanger. This method has been foolproof for me even with very heavy pictures and mirrors.

Canvas frames are very lightweight and a nice triptych would take up a lot of room on your wall but the 3 individual pieces are small and light. Make sure there is a proper hanging system on the canvases - wire or eyelets.

IKEA used to sell picture hanging kits which were really good.

I have a fabric patchwork I bought in India. It sounds old fashioned but it's actually made from decorative sari scraps in a geometric design in purple and pinks with lots of sparkly bling!
I have a similar feeling about stuff above my head - hence having something fabric...

Wall stickers/decals.

You can get them in most designs.
What colour is the wall, and what’s your taste?

LavenderBush · 26/11/2018 10:14

Could you just pull your bed a couple of inches away from the wall? Then pictures would just fall down the gap instead of onto you.

It's practically impossible for your pictures to fall down anyway if you hang them properly. But it's definitely impossible for them to leap away from the wall like little homing missiles.

Have you thought about a large photo wall mural? You can get them printed to loads of different designs, or upload your own photo. If you google 'photo wallpaper' you will get lots of companies that do it. I have had it, and it was really good quality (far better than normal wallpaper) and easy to stick on. Have just ordered more for another room.

Most modern pre-made frames have lightweight plexi-glass (sp?) as standard (i.e. IKEA), and most framing shops will offer this as an option. Much less damage potential than glass.
