To allow access to my cctv footage for a neighbour who has caused me grief?

Next door neighbour has lived here 2yrs. Been absolute nightmare. Rubbish thrown over fences, parking blocking my drive, putting their rubbish in my bin, noise all hours of the day, dog barking, rude kids, you name it sure they’ve done it.

I live alone with my 14yr old daughter. Our house isn’t attached to theirs, but only narrow path separates us. We keep ourselves to ourselves. However, one of their daughters found out my husband took his own life and has taunted my daughter with this ever since.

After taking advice from police, I installed a cctv system, quite expensive, to record this happening, so the police can build a file.

Now, they want the police to view my cctv footage as they had a fight with some friends of theirs and knives were produced. No one was hurt.

Am I being unreasonable to say no.?

Has the police asked or the neighbour?

I think I would allow the police to view the data, but maybe only at the request of the police. Knife crime is a serious issue.

You never know, it may help to build bridges. Denying the request would maybe antagonise the situation further.

ScreamingValenta · 25/11/2018 19:56

If the approach came from the police, I would, in the wider cause of tackling knife crime.

paintinmyhairAgain · 25/11/2018 19:56

see it as helping the police, the cf neighbours are irrelevant.

Gronky · 25/11/2018 19:57

I absolutely would. Regardless of how unpleasant your neighbors may be, crime is crime and anything you can do to discourage it in your area ultimately serves you in the long run. As Petal said, I would also be inclined to only turn it over to the police and not to them directly.

StoneofDestiny · 25/11/2018 19:58

If the police ask yes, if the CF neighbours ask, then no.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 25/11/2018 19:59

Is this an opportunity to get the police to warn them about their poor conduct towards you? Id put together a compilation of their bad behaviour along with the knife incident.

HoleyCoMoley · 25/11/2018 20:00

Can you arrange for the police to view it in your own home and only view the time of the fifht and use it if theres footage of the actual fight.

BumbleBeee69 · 25/11/2018 20:01

ONLY, if the Police came knocking then of course Yes, but for them knocking personally NOPE Flowers

1mum1kid · 25/11/2018 20:01

One of my other neighbours told the police I had cctv. The police haven’t been and asked yet. I was just wondering what to do.

Obviously I want to help the police, knife crime is terrible. Just feeling little unsure.

It will not help build bridges with them. Not after all the things they’ve said to my daughter.

They sound revolting. As others have said I would produce it if the police ask but I wouldn’t hand over any footage directly to the neighbours. Have you looked and did you catch the incident? Was it incriminating?

1mum1kid · 25/11/2018 20:05

Testingtesting. It’s installed because the police advised it to record their behaviour.

I haven’t looked yet, only just found out.

I will let the police look if they ask.

Have a look and see if there's anything, if the police have been told you have cctv then leave it to the police to ask, has their behaviours improved since you had it installed.

MrsTerryPratcett · 25/11/2018 20:10

If the neighbours see it they will know the camera angles and hidden areas. I'd be very suspicious.

PinsPegs · 25/11/2018 20:10

I think you are doing the right thing to let the police see it if they ask.

Sorry to hear that you have such shitty neighbours.

ImpendingDisaster · 25/11/2018 20:14

Gosh, you're being put to the test aren't you!

I'd do it once and not again if their behaviour didn't improve. Just know you'll have the high ground.

Twats.

Craft1905 · 25/11/2018 20:18

Ask the police who is alleged to have the knife, your neighbours or the people they had a fight with.

If it's your neighbours with the knife, give them access. If it's the enemies of your neighbours, say the CCTV had a fault and didn't record for a few days.

The enemy of your enemy is your friend.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 25/11/2018 20:18

Ask your neighbours to ask the police to ask you. Don't take their word for anything. If you get an official request from the police, then yeah fine, otherwise tell your neighbour to go do one.

HoleyCoMoley · 25/11/2018 20:21

I wouldn't engage with ndn at all, just leave it to the police to sort out if they want to pursue it and request that you sit in on the viewing, the cctv is your property, it might all be a load of tosh.

PersonaNonGarter · 25/11/2018 20:23

As others have said: make it available to the police. No one else.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 25/11/2018 20:24

Letting neighbours view it could lead to vigilante revenge. I would show it just to police.

Maelstrop · 25/11/2018 20:26

Wait for the police. Is it obvious from the angle that it's your cctv?

1mum1kid · 25/11/2018 20:28

I have no intention of allowing the neighbours of seeing it. They haven’t actually asked, I just know from another neighbour that they are aware I may have footage.

I am hoping that the cctv will show that my neighbour has the knife/knives. Sort of karma.

OP, am so sorry for your loss.

HoleyCoMoley · 25/11/2018 20:31

Who wants the police to see it

diddl · 25/11/2018 20:35

"I am hoping that the cctv will show that my neighbour has the knife/knives."

I wouldn't have thought so if they are the ones wanting the police to view it!
