To think you shouldnt put amazon link requests under your secret santa

Annoyed at colleague.

Work budget named as secret santa was £10 max. It was reiterated this was Max amount as a few people thought this too high. So most people will probably spend £5 which i think is reasonable.

The person I got put a specific £10 item link on the secretsanta info bit. I am annoyed. I dont want to have the joy taken out of a fun expetience and just hand over a colleague a tenner. Dont want to be seen as the one who clearly ignored a request too.

I know I dont have to buy the stupid item for a tenner but I feel compelled to.

Extra annoyed as find this colleague hard work most of the time.

See now I would do the exact opposite just to annoy them. It is secret after all Grin

ScreamingValenta · 25/11/2018 11:54

I'd probably be quite grateful that I didn't have to think of something to buy for the person!

TheBigBangRocks · 25/11/2018 11:55

In a world where we waste so much isn't it better to get the person an item they actually want than so,etching they may not use that ends up in landfill.

Starlight345 · 25/11/2018 12:02

depends if you have prime though otherwise it is a tenner plus postage .

Is it something that gives you an idea what to buy?

WhirlwindHugs · 25/11/2018 12:03

Well... They don't know who buys for them do they?

I wouldn't buy it.

chipsandpeas · 25/11/2018 12:04

for our secret santa we make a list of likes and dislikes to stop geting someone something they dont like

chronicplainjane · 25/11/2018 12:04

It’s crap that some will spend £5 and get a £10 gift.

DocusDiplo · 25/11/2018 12:05

Lol loveyoulots

I know, Screaming and BigBang, I guess its good I dont need to traipse around, my irritation at colleague generally is not helping. Also I am pretty skint and so £10 on him is grating right now. I think choosing a selection of smaller gifts of 3-4£ would have been more respectful.

OP posts:
DocusDiplo · 25/11/2018 12:07

I am gonna get it whirlwind as if it is found out (as these things usually are) I don't want to be seen as ... mean? tight? contrary?

OP posts:
gamerchick · 25/11/2018 12:07

It's secret, he won't know. I wouldn't get what he linked to because it would grate.

youarenotkiddingme · 25/11/2018 12:16

I'd be totally annoyed too. We do secret Santa for £10 but there's no particular specification or requests. We are a tight knit department though and so everyone gets something they like and will use.

Having said that I'd bung it on my amazon Xmas order just because it would save be brain space I don't seem to possess in abundance this time of year 😂

LemonSqueezy0 · 25/11/2018 12:19

I wouldn't get it, and be prepared to laugh it off if it comes to it.

It's not in the spirit of Christmas to make demands so make an effort to get thoughtful, appropriate gifts within budget for them and don't feel guilty about it.

ElainaElephant · 25/11/2018 12:20

Can you shop around to find it cheaper?

DriveInSaturday · 25/11/2018 13:20

Elaina Probably can't find it cheaper if it's £10 on Amazon.

If you are going to put something so specific on a wishlist for Secret Santa, you shouldn't choose something at the top end of the price range. I would have thought a wish list should just be to give people general ideas (bottle of red wine for me please).

ElainaElephant · 25/11/2018 13:24

Amazon aren't the cheapest for everything.

I've just ordered something for £2.59 that was over £5 on Amazon, from the cheapest seller.

AlexanderHamilton · 25/11/2018 13:25

Is the £10 including postage?

Personally I’d find something else at around the £5 mark.

SnuggyBuggy · 25/11/2018 13:26

If it was a family secret santa I'd be more ok with it.

LagunaBubbles · 25/11/2018 13:27

You're not obligated to get it, it's called Secret Santa for a reason.

Munchyseeds · 25/11/2018 13:29

We do that for our family secret Santa....No way would it happen at work

IceRebel · 25/11/2018 13:34

It’s crap that some will spend £5 and get a £10 gift.

Agreed chronicplainjane

As for the request OP I would ignore it, you don't get to choose what you get bought for a secret santa.

user1471426142 · 25/11/2018 13:35

Thing is though secret Santas at work tend to be shite so I’d be grateful for the link. I don’t participate in my one as I just think it is a massive waste for 100s of people to be spending money on tat. I’d much rather they did a collection for a charity. I’m not normally a scrogue but I’ve seen so many people be disappointed with or offended by gifts given by people they don’t know that the whole thing just seems wasteful.

DriveInSaturday · 25/11/2018 14:54

I saw VIPoo advertised on TV the other day as 'the ideal Secret Santa gift!'. No, it really isn't.

DocusDiplo · 26/11/2018 07:46

DriveInSaturday I am too scared to Google what that is!

I feel better I have got my annoyance off my chest.

Ah well, glad I am not wrong to be a tad peeved, couldnt talk about it at work, obviously!

Just the work xmas to to get through now....

Oh and its an electeonic gadget so I cant be asked to trawl and get something that is wrong spec, ships from China accidentally etc.

Give an amazon gift card, devilishly wrapped up in layers of bubble wrap and cable ties. Maximum gift brownie points, maximum fun watching recipient open, maximum irritation for recipient!
