BACKGROUND:

I live in a rural area. There is a beautiful country park nearby, which is popular with walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, etc. Sometimes doggers too, but the less said about that, the better.

THE ISSUE:

I approached a woman who was with her dogs, tying a bag of dog poo on to the fence of a field full of sheep. I approached her and asked her to keep hold of it until she could put it in a bin, or take it home with her. Well, this made her really angry. She shouted at me, said she wasn’t going to “put fucking dog shit in my car”. Then told me to “mind my own fucking business”.

The fence in question belongs to a farmer friend of mine. He and his wife are sick of people doing this -people regularly tie bags of rubbish / dog poo on to their fences. They then have to remove and dispose of it. In addition, another friend of mine had her horse in for colic surgery a couple of years ago, and they removed multiple pieces of plastic carrier bags from his intestine. She believes that the plastic came from him chewing on bags that get left tied to fences.

WIBU to say something?

Pinkyyy · 24/11/2018 12:13

Why did she even bother to bag it if she had no intention of disposing of it?

MotorcycleMayhem · 24/11/2018 12:13

We have stuck a hook on the tailgate of our car to put dog poo bags on if we walk in an area with no bins. Means we can chuck them in our bin when we get home. I have a dedicated dog poo bin at home too.

I also carry full dog poo bags on the dog lead rather than in my hand - I tie it across my body.

Honestly, people make life so fucking difficult for themselves. You're going to be picking shit up for years. Come up with a plan. Tieing bags up, even with good intentions, is unacceptable.

sossages · 24/11/2018 12:15

I find these people INFURIATING. They know dog poo is a problem so they go to the trouble of putting it in a bag. Then they fucking leave it there, in the middle of nowhere, at least 3 miles from anywhere any council worker has ever done a litter pick! Why?! If you don't give a fuck, why not just leave it where the dog left it, then at least it will eventually decompose in the treads of my walking boots

IT MAKES NO SENSE.

sossages · 24/11/2018 12:16

Sorry, I meant YANBU (in case that wasn't clear)

Lizzie48 · 24/11/2018 12:17

I get so fed up with people not picking up their dogs' shit. You choose to have a dog, therefore you have to cope with dog shit. One of my friends has a dog, and she really hates this; she regularly picks up other people's dog shit, as she often has her DC with her.

CynthiaRothrock · 24/11/2018 12:17

Report her to the council if you know what times she is there. I did this once, a guy used to walk past my house every morning with his dog and a cup of coffee. Every morning he would throw his cup over a fence near the embankment, cross the road where his dog would shit, pick it up and throw the bag of shit over the fence at the other side of the embankment. I complained and they sent someone out who watched him do this and fined him on the spot £160 (80 for each offence). They then did a clean up an removed over 300 coffee cups from his dumping spot an countless bags of shit from the other, i do belive he was billed for the clean up too.

AmIAWeed · 24/11/2018 12:17

We have a huge issue with dog mess, we have one bin - depending the route you take it might get be the start or end of the walk but it does put people off binning it, they simply leave so they don't have to carry it. Which whilst is totally wrong people want an easy option. I've tried to get extra bins added which was refused by the parish council who don't want to pay to empty them...so instead the farmers fields, along the footpaths are covered in poo. The cost of the poo bins would far out way the financial damage and waste of life to cows and sheep coming into contact with faeces. I'd propose your farmer friends take evidence and campaign for poo bins

CynthiaRothrock · 24/11/2018 12:20

Admittedly i did feel very smug watching him being handed the fix penalty notice, and did not feel one ounce of guilt when he looked over and scowled at me. He still passes my house now with his coffee and dog but he doesn't dump his rubbish anymore!

Lucisky · 24/11/2018 12:23

I usually put the bag in my pocket until I can put it in a bin.
I went with my oh to see a show in a local town hall. I hung my coat on the back of the seat but kept getting a whiff of dirty nappy. I was looking around for a hidden baby. It was only when I put my coat back on I realised there was a festering bag of shit in there. God knows what the people around me thought.
We have loads of bins locally, but still people just drop bags. They are just plain ignorant.

BewareOfDragons · 24/11/2018 12:27

Shame you didn't blatantly take her picture and tell her you'd post it on the local social media pages ...

People suck. Filthy entitled behaviour.

KurriKurri · 24/11/2018 12:27

People round here pick up dog poo in bag, then leave it on the pavement. I have even seen people pick up dog poo - look round furtively and then drop in over someone's garden fence.

I mean what is the fucking point ? You might as well leave it on the pavement or the field if you are going to do that. people are completely disgusting.

Could your farmer friend maybe put a sign on his fence 'don;t leave bags of dog poo hanging on my fence, my horses could eat them and become seriously ill or die' or words to that effect.

Celebelly · 24/11/2018 12:28

They could put up a sign saying they've installed hidden CCTV and footage of anyone littering will be reported to the council.

CemetaryGates · 24/11/2018 12:38

@MadameButterface

To be honest, I expected that some people would say that I was sticking my nose in where it doesn't belong.

thejollytrolleydolly · 24/11/2018 12:38

@sossages I totally agree!! Why would you leave a plastic bag (which will take 9,000,000,000 years to decompose) tied to a tree/fence/bush when leaving the poop (vile as it is) on its own in the grass would quickly join the earth after a bit of rain.

PEOPLE ARE STUPID.

Serialweightwatcher · 24/11/2018 12:40

You were right - she's a selfish fool ... some people are just awful and it makes me so cross

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/11/2018 12:42

Disgusting. The poo itself in situ is less hazardous than hanging bags on trees or gates. That’s beyond vile. It’s not illegal to litter farmland with dog faeces so I really don’t get this mentality of picking it up and depositing it elsewhere wrapped in plastic. Both are hazardous to other animals though and horrible if left in an arable field or one used to make hay. Really simple just to bin it or take it home.

bertielab · 24/11/2018 12:48

Yep ask nicely then photo and shame.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/11/2018 12:53

CynthiaRothrock - you totally rock! That's just brilliant - poetic retribution for the littering bastard!

OP - of course YWNBU, the woman went off on one because she'd been caught out, as has been said already.

Next time take a photo and send it to the Council.

I'm in Australia and we're encouraged to take photos of cars parked badly/in wrong areas and "dob" them in to local Council - probably the same in the UK - don't see why people shouldn't get dobbed in too.

Also, your farmer neighbours should consider putting up signs to deter the fools - won't stop them all but might stop some - with pictures of horses who've died from eating the stupid poo bags.

Honeyroar · 24/11/2018 12:58

Even "if" you return to pick up the plastic bag tied on a tree later, it still looks horrible for everyone walking past after you, it is litter even if it's only there for a few hours, and it can still cause problems to sheep/cows/horses if they eat it. Just because it's an empty field doesn't mean the farmer isn't going to put something in the field while you're on you're walk.

It's lazy and its slobby to leave a bag,r any reasons. I have three dogs and I still manage to carry it all in bags until I get to a bin.

Sorry if I'm ranting, but I live on a small holding and am constantly having to unhook bags of shit from my barbed wire (often getting it on my hand because the bag has ripped on the wire), or dig them out of dry stone walls. Nobody EVER comes back for them. There's even a bin one field away and people don't carry it there. Personally I'd rather people just left it unbagged.

GabsAlot · 24/11/2018 13:14

i agree about leaving it tied to a tree whatever till later-people still have to walk past it your dog is not my problem take it with you

Gatehouse77 · 24/11/2018 13:23

Those who bag it and leave on their way back, why???

Would you do that with a dirty nappy? Litter?

Gross.

Your choice to have a dog so you do the right thing by everyone and take your dog shit with YOU until you find a bin.

Don't like it? Don't have a dog.

arranfan · 25/11/2018 23:09

Damon Green of ITV had a picture of a sign erected by a fed-up farmer:

CemetaryGates · 27/11/2018 12:20

@arranfan

That sign is brilliant! 😂
