Do you think this is evidence and should be handed in to a police station?

This morning I found the photo page of someone’s passport on the pavement, it is current. No one would discard their own ID surely.

I picked it up (in a gloved hand) and carried on my walk, inventing scenarios in my head of what could have happened. My best conclusion is a DV case of a man ripping the passport up to prevent his partner travelling or leaving him.
Should I hand it in, it may be a burglary/robbery and be covered in prints.

The OP says it's CURRENT, Aridane!

Yes hand it in but you don't need to speculate about how or why it got there. Some one might have a replaces a lost passport then found it again, it could have been stolen and forged or accidentally thrown out. Not for you to worry about.

ciderhouserules · 24/11/2018 13:45

The OP says it's a page from the ORIGINAL, Itsnowthewaitinggame. Not a copy!

Hmm
Unicornandbows · 24/11/2018 13:49

There's usually an address in the passport perhaps you could drop it off

WeirdHandDryers · 24/11/2018 13:52

😂 what an hilarious OP! Are you being serious? Do you often carry gloves with you in case you happen upon evidence that needs to be picked up? Do you carry sample bottles too? And a clear plastic bag in which to store your finds? 😂

Positivethinking1 · 24/11/2018 13:57

@WeirdHandDryers

Don't you? Weirdo.

All these people who are so unimaginative and never think "what if" if they happen across something peculiar...

It is a weird thing to find. It might have an innocent explanation, but I can't think offhand why anyone would tear out the photopage on a valid passport. I would be inclined to phone the local police station and ask if they would like you to hand it in or post it to the passport office.

Thing is, whilst it could well be connected to something dodgy, I can't imagine them keeping it safely in case they eventually find out what it is connected to...

ChocolateTearDrops · 24/11/2018 14:00

You need to post it to 221b Baker St, Marylebone, London NW1 6XE. Wink

KitKat1985 · 24/11/2018 14:15

You might find the police aren't interested.

Someone threw several boxes worth of emptied morphine medication (with the dispensing label torn off) into my garden in the spring, which had clearly been emptied out and bagged up for sale. I let the police know who replied telling me to put the boxes in the recycling.

Wauden · 24/11/2018 14:22

To the poster who queried why OP was wearing gloves, perhaps the reason is, because its cold!

WTFpeople · 24/11/2018 14:36

Agree with pp. I wouldn't bother with the police. If you could even find an office open today ever they likely won't care. Phone the passport office. You can find the number here: www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-passport-office

EleanorofCastile · 24/11/2018 14:44

I think it’s very suspicious that it’s a torn out photo page (of a current passport) and it’s likely that it has been done maliciously, so yes I’d take it to the police station. They would be able to check the details of the person before reporting to the passport office. At least, that’s what I assume they would do!

Thanks all of you. I popped in to our OPEN police station, chatted to the lady on the counter and relayed my theories to her and she pretended to be very interested, she took the page from me, (which I had placed in spare evidence bag I had in the kitchen drawer!!!) she thanked me for taking it in and said that in these cases they trace the owner to check everything is ok. Well done Staffordshire Police. Although I suppose she could have been humouring me. But I feeI did the right thing.

Good job OP

The police should also contact the Passport Office so that it can be recorded as lost / stolen, and the passport number put on a watch list so that if someone else tried to use it for travel (with a new photo page) they won't be able to

Ariela · 24/11/2018 16:32

Could be they've stolen a passport, will cut the spine and melt off the glue and insert their OWN forged passport photo page in someone else's details

Rockmysocks · 24/11/2018 17:12

Hopefully a full forensic investigation will identify the owner of the passport and it isn't that woman being sued by the grandad. You know the saying: dont get mad, get eben

Aridane · 24/11/2018 19:35

Bless you, OP
