IABU by using this thread for traffic but can I ask for a private breast surgeon recommendation?

Hello,

I need to book a private appointment with a surgeon for a second opinion on some inflammation and thickening shown on breast ultrasound (I'm too young for a mammogram).

I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a good (breast cancer) surgeon in England? If they offer consultations at a reasonable cost (I don't have insurance) then that would be great!

Thank you!

Roughly where are you?

Rosethistle7 · 23/11/2018 22:33

The Midlands (close to Ludlow)- I could travel a reasonable distance though (e.g. I have been looking at clinics in London, Oxford and Liverpool).

Too young for a mammogram? I didn’t realise there was an age limit.

I had my breast surgery done on the NHS so I can’t suggest anyone private. You could look at the London teaching hospitals-I recomend Barts and the Royal London - and call to see if anyone will see you privately.

On the Nhs you don’t get seen by one person, you get seen by team.

Could you ask for a second opinion?

Rosethistle7 · 23/11/2018 22:51

Thanks Golden!

Yes at the (NHS) hospital that I went to anyone under 35 is considered too young for a mammogram because the breast tissue is too dense for mammography to be accurate- I just googled it and apparently that's quite normal for most UK hospitals.

I was seen by a specialist nurse and a sonographer at my one-stop breast clinic appointment. The nurse was unpleasant and gave no explanation for the inflammation and thickening on ultrasound. I am afraid to ask for a second opinion on the NHS.

I had a mammogram at 35. I I actually did have Breast cancer.

Please don’t be frightened to ask for a second opinion.

After my first mammogram I was told I didn’t have cancer. Fortunately I was kept in the system. Eventually someone else checked the original mammogram. It had been misread the first time and I did have cancer.

I’ll pm you my fantasticsurgeon but I think she’s moved out of London and I don’t think she does private.

Rosethistle7 · 23/11/2018 23:10

Oh thank you so much Golden, that would be great.

I'm really sorry you have BC and at a really young age too. I hope things are as ok as they can at the moment.

I'm 30, I think for people who are 35+ they mammogram BUT I would prefer to have a mammogram if it helped with a definite diagnosis (or to exclude any diagnosis). I'm concerned that my ultrasound might not even have been looked at by the consultant breast surgeon as I only saw a specialist nurse. My concern is that inflammation and thickening could indicate inflammatory breast cancer or invasive lobular carcinoma- but I don't have the medical knowledge to feel confident in asking for a second opinion. The sonographer showed me the inflammation and asked whether I'd had an infection but I haven't had one and then I was given no explanation for it!

I'm not on a high income but just not sure if I should wait 3 weeks for a routine GP appointment, only to then try to be assertive to argue for another 2-week-referral OR whether to take on some extra credit card debt in order to know sooner xx

I’ve PM’d you Flowers

GoldenPomBearBadge · 23/11/2018 23:26

Hmm.

I’m over a decade past diagnosis and doing ok thanks.

I’m always wary of frightening people by what I say on here. I think you are right to question. Mine was inflammatory breast cancer and DCI.

I personally wouldn’t go private for nothing related to cancer if I could help it. Unless I had the first apt as a private patient and transferred to the Nhs?

I would ask for a second opinon.

I have messaged you xx

Mr Smith at the Circle in Reading I found him great and the several other ladies I know have been treated by him have agreed.

Rosethistle7 · 23/11/2018 23:33

Thank you so much DuchessofEaling, Golden, Petitepeach and Lonecat!

rosethistle feel.free to.pm.me if you want any more info... she really was fabulous..

Rosethistle7 · 26/11/2018 16:08

Thank you Freddiemercury! I hope you are ok now. I am considering an NHS referral to the Royal Marsden but unfortunately I might not be able to fund a private appointment with Nicky Roche, even though she sounds great.

I'm considering going to 'The London Breast Clinic' to see Bareen Shah or Fiona McNeill.
